The Australian Consortium for In-Country Indonesian Studies known as ACICIS (pronounced

“ah-chee-chis” as an Indonesian would) has been opening doors to tertiary institutions throughout

Indonesia since 1994, offering a range of study options and in-country support to help students gain

invaluable first-hand experience of one of the richest and most diverse countries in the world.

About the Program

ACICIS offers advanced language students capable of independent study the opportunity to undertake field study through Universitas Muhammadiyah, Malang (UMM). Students usually undertake the Field Study option following a semester at Universitas Gadjah Mada, though in some cases it is possible to do it as a first semester option. A number of students have incorporated their projects into an undergraduate honours program with the approval of their home university.

What is involved?

During the first three weeks, students attend lectures, seminars and discussions in Malang. They meet in groups to discuss their topics with UMM staff and arrange various permission letters. In addition, ACICIS students:

» are allocated an UMM staff member who provides academic supervision;

» undertake a two month period of field study;

» submit a final report at the end of semester (between 8-12,000 words);

» present their findings in Indonesian at a seminar attended by UMM students, staff, and the ACICIS Resident Director;

» have the opportunity for their report to be published on the ACICIS website.
