Ambush Orders

Ambush orders follow the same format given for patrol orders up to phase 2

Ambush Orders• Prelims: Time of first light Time of last light The moon state The expected weather • Ground• Situation Enemy Forces: Strengths, Weapons, Defences, Routines, Habits,

Patrol Activity, Minefields, Wire, Trip flares and Fixed lines.

• Situation Friendly Forces: Company / platoon plan, Own position, Other

positions, Minefields, wires, trip flares and fixed lines.

Ambush Orders• Mission• Execution• Phase 1 preparatory move• Phase 2 route out• Phase 3 action on firm base• Phase 4 occupation of ambush• Phase 5 action on approach of enemy• Phase 6 withdrawal• Phase 7 route back

Ambush Orders: Phase 1 preparatory move

• Time of leaving base area• Method of movement• Loading plan for personnel and equipment• Route to location of DOP (drop of point)• Arcs of observation /fire• Order of march• Action if ambushed• Action at DOP• Time out

Ambush Orders: Phase 2 Route out• Action at halts• Action at R.Vs• Action at final RV / firm base• Action on encountering enemy if

seen/ambushed &Signal to open fire• Action with prisoners• Drill for obstacles. Action on mines and trip

wires• Action on lights• Action with casualties• Action if separated from patrol or lost

• Method of entry• Individual positions and arcs of fire• Sentries• Routine• Admin• Action if surprised• Action if recce fails to return

Ambush Orders: Phase 4 Occupation of Ambush

• Order of march• Method of entry• Individual positions• Laying of: a) Mines b) Booby traps, etc c) Warning devices• Laying of comms cables, cords etc.• Setting arcs of fire• Signal of ambush site• Time ambush set

Ambush Orders: Phase 5 Action on a approach of Enemy

• Warning signals from cut-off groups• Signal to fire• Action of cut-offs• Action if located by enemy before ambush

sprung• Action if attacked

• Signal to move off• Order of march• Action if enemy follow

Service support is easy to remember as long as you keep D.E.W.A.R.M.P.T. in mind

D = DressE = Equipment and toolsW = WeaponsA = AmmunitionR = Rations and waterM = MedicalP = Prisoners of war (POW)T = Transport

Ambush Orders: Command and signal

• Chain of command. Everyone must have a role e.g if you have 8 cadets each cadet must be an ‘IC’ 1IC to 8IC

• Hand signals• Signal to open fire• Use of radios• Passwords• Debrief / Patrol report

understanding• Lastly synchronise all watches
