15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends and Parishioners of St, Jerome,

Pax Christi semper vobiscum! When I arrived at St. Jerome's two years ago, there

were mixed feelings of excitement and fear as I entered the door of the magnificent church building. It was evening twilight. I still remember the puzzled faces of our parishioners who met me for the first time. It was a normal reaction. We did not know each other. I was certain that the question of “change” was on the minds of many: How will this new priest minister to us? What will be the changes that he will initiate right away? What will be his way of doing things in the parish? Perhaps these were the questions that lingered on the minds of those who were present that evening. Well, the feeling was mutual. I was hesitant, dubious, fearful and uncertain. I asked myself my own question: Will I be received well? Will I be accepted? What will be the challenges that are waiting me as I minister to this diverse parish? Who will be in consistent opposition to my initiatives? Will I receive support from the parish leaders as I journey with the community to re-discover the renewed mission of Jesus Christ at St. Jerome's? More so, what exactly will be God’s project that the parish ought to accomplish in the coming years? I remained stunned for a while. I prayed and reflected on my questions as I identified the unfolding of God’s providence each day. Yet, many challenges also unfolded. It was difficult.

Like the experience of the Israelites during their journey in the desert as they left Egypt, there was always a big temptation for me to return to the place where my comfort was. But doing so would be unrealistic for me. My reality is at St. Jerome's. It is here that God brought me and sent me to be His collaborator on His mission. It is here where I needed to learn how to respond kindly and yet firmly when being attacked and being disrespected by some. It is here where I needed to learn how to see the goodness of God through the people who piously pray and serve each other with joy. God brought me here so that I may see the unveiling of His Divine Providence when the community of faith works together for His holy cause.

I began having a bird’s eye view of the parish ministries after two months of being around. I got to know the parish leaders and the different parish groups. Things unfolded gradually as I listened to parishioners and observed how everyone did things on their own. I learned a lot from them. It revealed to me how the process of transition was truly challenging.

These two years have gone by quickly. Those days, as all days, were filled will God’s providence. God showed His mercy. God has spoken in so many circumstances and life events of our parish. He has extended His grace upon us and He continues to inspire us. We are a blessed community of faith. For this, I am truly grateful.

One of the many things that challenged me aside from pastoral ministry was the upkeep of the buildings. We are blessed to have many buildings, yet we are also challenged

Estaba vacilante, dudoso, temeroso e inseguro. Me hice mi propia pregunta: ¿Me recibirán bien?

Comencé a imaginar.

to keep them in good condition. I am certain that you have seen them, and you are aware how much we need to put our efforts together to keep our buildings safe and well maintained. I had the opportunity during the week of my arrival to the parish to have a maintenance tour from Juan Herbas. It was Independence Day. We went down to all the basements of our buildings. We went to the roof tops of the convent and the school building, the ceiling of the church, and the bell tower. Yes, the bell tower has a chime that we have not heard ringing for many, many years. I was stunned to see the entire mechanism of the chime. It was huge. I began imagining. I thought, perhaps one day “The Voice” of St. Jerome may be heard once again as we hear the pealing of the chimes from our bell tower. For a while, I was very excited with the thought. Then, as I went down from the tower, I saw i needed to return to reality. I knew that having the chime fixed may be the last of the parish expense priorities. I rested my thoughts on that conclusion. But after six months, out of nowhere, the Verdin company left a message on my phone. They were asking if I would be interested in having the chimes fixed. Apparently, they had a conversation with Fr. Jeremy about it back during the time of Ray Ward. I told myself, Of course I am. But we don’t have money to fix it. So I did not return their call. Then last November I received an email from the same Verdin company. The inquiry was the same: Would I be interested in hearing the chimes of St. Jerome ring once again? Of course, my reaction was the same: We have no money. Our focus had been on the restoration of the church floor and the church lighting, repair of the antiquated boiler system and the church lighting and repair of the bell tower itself. So I ignored their email once again. I thought we have other priorities.

A month ago, I received another call from them. This time I entertained the call. I asked for a possible quotation of the project and the specifics of the chime repair. There’s a voice in me that says, It would be nice to have the bells ring during the opening Mass of the 125th Anniversary in

October. I cannot stay away from the thought. So if I may asked the parish, is there anyone who is willing to donate $7,000 to bring back the “Voice of St. Jerome” through the ringing of the chimes before and after our liturgies? I just thought I would ask. As Jesus says in the Scriptures: "Ask and you shall receive." I am willing to wait patiently for the answer.

In the end, I remain ever grateful for so many of you who have supported our cause over the last two years of my parish ministry. Please continue praying for me that I may persevere in collaborating with Jesus Christ in His mission here at St. Jerome's for the good of all.

Sincerely in Christ and Mary,
