Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Effectively it is on this Sunday that we get going with the systematic reading of Matthew’s gospel. But we shall do this only for four more weeks before the seasons of Lent and Easter take over. Through this short period, we shall hear extracts from the Sermon on the Mount, though we have already missed the opening section, the Beatitudes (Displaced by the feast of the Presentation). We shall also miss the conclusion to the sermon, as well as the “Missionary discourses” of Jesus, because of the feasts that follow the Easter season. It’s generally accepted that Matthew has shaped much of his gospel around five speeches or “discourses”. These appear to parallel the five books of the Torah the first five books of the Bible attributed to Moses. Jesus, Matthew suggests, is a new Moses who offers teaching that both fulfils and goes far beyond the original Torah. This pattern is certainly evident in the Sermon on the Mount. Words of Wisdom Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.

‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your father in heaven.’

Commentary on the Gospel

Jesus tells his disciples that they are “the salt of

the earth” and “the light of the world”.

It is easy enough to readily grasp the latter

image; an unexpected power failure swiftly

brings home our dependence on artificial light.

But in this age of extraordinary technology we

can well become fascinated with spectacular

displays of light. In that case Jesus has a timely

teaching for us. The light that shines in our

lives – our “good works” – are not to draw

attention to themselves. They are to prompt

those who see them to “give the praise to your

father in heaven”. No room for self-importance

here.

The image of the salt may resonate less directly

with us, especially if we are salt-averse for

health reasons. It is useful to know that salt

was a precious commodity in ancient times.

Not only was it a preservative in an age without

refrigeration; it was also valuable enough to be

used as currency. Jesus’ point is clear: the

disciples’ lives are to bring flavor and zest to

the human enterprise.

Adult Faith Enrichment Opportunities

The Centre for Faith Enrichment has a variety of short courses and one-off events on offer at several locations throughout Perth and online (very user friendly and no need to travel!). No prior learning is required, the environment is always relaxed and friendly, and there are no exams or assignments.

For more information, visit www.cfe.org.au or simply call 9241 5221 for a Term One brochure.

The CFE now has a beautiful new Sacraments website. It is designed especially for parents who are helping to prepare their children to receive Sacraments.

2017 Sacramental Program

This Parish family based program covers the sacraments of Confirmation,

First Eucharist and Reconciliation.

You are required to register your child’s participation in the program by attending the Registration Session in the church on Wednesday 15th March at 7:30 pm. Children are not required to attend, but is essential that a parent (or both parents) attend this session.
