Salt & Light
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In 2002, the summer after I graduated high school and before I entered seminary, Pope John Paul II visited Toronto, Canada for World Youth Day. I went with a youth group from St. Mary’s Parish in Longview. The theme for that World Youth Day was “salt of the earth and light of the world.” Pope John Paul urged us young people to live this teaching radically, and it made a big impression on me as I was entering seminary — in discernment and for-mation to give my life over to Christ completely and for the ministry of the Church. In Matthew 5, the gospel of this Sunday, right after our Lord gives the Beatitudes, He uses the metaphors of salt and light to describe what our mission should be in the world. This teaching is not just for the youth, it is not just for the retired, it is not just for the ordained or professed religious — it is for all of us. The beautiful thing about these images – salt and light – is that they are just as relevant today as they were 2,000 years ago. Salt gives more intense flavor to food, makes it pleasant, and preserves it. Once salt is added to the food, it disappears. As “salt of the earth,” we are called to enrich human values around us by the witness of our lives. As God’s salt, we bring Christ’s presence without im-posing Him on anyone (this is how we “disappear” like salt). Yet, we have clear principles by which we are to “flavor” the world around us through hard work and fidelity to our families. The creation of light was God’s first act in calling creation into being. Light is an image of the Lord Himself, as well as heaven and goodness. The absence of light, that is, darkness, symbolizes disorder, death, evil, hell. As “light of the world,” we have the mission to show Christ’s love in concrete ways to a world that is darkened by hedonism and materialism. Although we all know we must be salt of the earth and light to the world, our witness is se-riously wounded when we give in to the overbearing tide of secularism and selfishness. The contraception culture, the acceptance of living together without being married, the ac-ceptance of divorce for any reason, the leaving of our elderly in nursing homes without visit-ing them, the voting for pro-abortion politicians — when Catholics are guilty of these things, we lose our flavor, we lose our light. The challenge of Jesus Christ is to be faithful to His teachings that He gives us through Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church. This gives us flavor; it gives us light! And we must shine this light to all around us so that they may give glory to our Father in heaven.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, En el año 2002, el verano siguiente a mi graduación de la escuela superior y antes de ingre-sar al seminario, el Papa Juan Pablo II visitó a Toronto, Canadá para la celebración del Día Mundial de la Juventud. Yo fui con un grupo de jóvenes de la Parroquia de St. Mary´s en Long-view. El tema para ese día Mundial de la Juventud fue “sal de la tierra y luz del mundo.” El Pa-pa Juan Pablo nos rogó a nosotros los jóvenes a vivir esta enseñanza radicalmente, y eso me causó una profunda impresión cuando ingresé al seminario — en mi discernimiento y formación, decidí consagrar mi vida completamente a Cristo y al ministerio de la Iglesia. En Mateo 5, en el evangelio de hoy, inmediatamente después de que nuestro Señor ofrece las Bienaventuranzas, Él usa las metáforas de la sal y la luz para describir cual debe ser nues-tra misión en el mundo. Esta enseñanza no es solamente para la juventud, no es solo para los retirados, no solo para los ordenados o para los que han hecho profesión religiosa — es para todos nosotros. Lo bello de estas imágenes – sal y luz – es que ellas son tan aplicables hoy co-mo lo fueron hace 2,000 años. La sal intensifica el sabor de los alimentos, los hace más gustosos y los preserva. Una vez que se agrega a la comida, la sal desaparece. Como “sal de la tierra,” somos llamados a enri-quecer los valores humanos en torno a nosotros con el ejemplo de nuestras vidas. Como la sal de Dios, traemos la presencia de Cristo sin imponérselo a nadie (así es como nosotros “desaparecemos” como la sal). Sin embargo, tenemos claros los principios con los cuales da-mos “sabor” al mundo que nos rodea: mediante el trabajar duro y ser fieles a nuestras familias. La luz fue el primer acto creativo de Dios. La luz es una imagen tanto del Mismo Dios, como del cielo y de la bondad. La ausencia de luz, es decir, la oscuridad, simboliza el desorden, la muerte, el mal, el infierno. Como “luz del mundo”, tenemos la misión de mostrar el amor de Cristo en forma concreta al mundo que está en la oscuridad por el hedonismo y el materialismo. Aunque todos sabemos que debemos ser sal de la tierra y luz del mundo, nuestro testimonio se debilita seriamente cuando aceptamos la agobiadora marea del secularismo y del egoísmo. La cultura de la anticoncepción, la aceptación de parejas que viven juntos sin estar casados, la aceptación del divorcio por cualquier razón, el abandono de nuestros ancianos en clínicas de reposo sin visitarlos, el voto por políticos que apoyan el aborto — cuando los católicos son cul-pables de esas cosas, perdemos nuestra luz. El reto de Jesucristo es que seamos fieles a lo que Él nos enseña en la Sagrada Escritura, en la Tradición y en el Magisterio de la Iglesia. ¡Esto nos da sabor, nos da luz! Y nosotros debemos dejar brillar esa luz a nuestro rededor, pa-ra que quienes la vean den Gloria a nuestro Padre celestial.
