Ministry in Action...
PAGE 3 Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP
The stories we’ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and pos-sessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.
Question of the Week
First Reading — Job experienced months of misery and troubled nights (Job 7:1-4, 6-7). Psalm — Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147). Second Reading — I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23). Gospel — Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39). Question for Children: Name some bad things that you want to pray that Jesus will take away from our world. Question for Question for Adults: What are the evils in today's world that you pray God will free us from?

WHITE SPECIAL MASS PRAYER ENVELOPE
We’re reading St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even to-day. In Paul’s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan atti-tudes afflicted the community, which had a way of break-ing Paul’s heart; he wrote to them sometimes “with many tears” (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centu-ries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There’s a core city with glamor-ous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Do you ever feel that life is drudgery? Have you ever been ill and wondered about your place on the earth or in the lives of the people you love? Do you sometimes feel rejected or misunderstood? On this Sunday in the early moments of a new year, we reflect on the clarity, consolation, and healing we find in faith. Job muses about the meaning of life; Saint Paul relies on faith as he responds to critics; the sick rush to Jesus, and he shows us God’s tender care for those who are ailing and outcast. Not only does he respond to those who come to him; he goes where they are. God seeks us out in our moments of weakness. God will always be with us in such real experiences of human life.
BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY TRAINING
“Blessed are those who weep and mourn for they shall be comforted”. Are you being called to help others who have lost a loved one? Please consider attending a Bereavement Workshop, that will cover how to comfort those who grieve and mourn by assisting families with preparations for the fu-neral liturgy.

MARRIED ON JANUARY 26, 2018
Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 6 February 4, 2018
WORLD MARRIAGE DAY, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11
World Marriage Day honors husbands and wives as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of society. It sa-lutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifices and joy in daily married life. Please join us in prayer to honor mar-ried couples at all of our weekend masses.
GUIDELINES REGARDING FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both days of Fast and Abstinence. All Fridays during Lent we abstain from eating meat (meat includes poultry) How do we fast? We are allowed one full meal during the day. Two smaller meals are permitted. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. How do we abstain? We refrain from all meat. Age guidelines for abstinence Abstinence is to be practiced by all who are 14 years of age and older. Age guidelines for fastening Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday.
Both personally and as a community we deliberately place ourselves in need (hunger being the most basic need) so that we can discover that for which we hunger spiritually in our lives and in our world. We do this to give concrete expression to our trust in God to give us the spiritual sustenance we require. Our joint action is intended to strengthen our deep belief that the God who raised Jesus from the dead also fills our every need.
PLANNING AHEAD: ASH WEDNESDAY FALLS ON VALENTINE’S DAY
This year Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day, Feb-ruary 14th. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of Lent. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence is the priority of Catholics. There is NO dispensation from fast and abstinence on this day. A suggestion could be to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, the day before, which is Mardi Gras!

Safeguard the Children
DID YOU KNOW? Commit to building family values and protecting vulnerable children. Children are exposed to many words, expressions, actions, and beliefs through their experiences. This is how they learn to become adults, and learn how to live in the world around them. Children turn to their parents for guidance. Strong family values modeled at home help children sustain their faith and teach them to live as children of God. Recommit to your families – listen to your children, model good behavior and virtue, and instruct them in faith. Pray to Mary for help, and ask her for guidance in raising your children as she did her Son. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article “Mother of Good Counsel Protect the Vul-nerable” visit www.archla.org/protecting.

REAL LIFE
The stories we hear in today’s readings are stories of real life. The book of Job is the story of a man who is tested by illness, the death of loved ones, and the loss of friend-ships. Most of us can we relate to Job. We have probably had moments when life feels like drudgery, or when we awake in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep. Not all were willing to hear the gospel from Saint Paul. They questioned his motives and did not understand his commitment to share the news of Jesus with all. It is not always easy to live as a disciple in today’s world, ei-ther. Not all will understand our commitment to Christian living. In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law and many others who were ill. Those who are in need seek him out. Even when he goes away to spend time in prayer, his disciples go to find him. Jesus does not seem to have many minutes to himself, which any parent, child, friend, or person committed to service can understand when putting the needs of others first. Real life can be challenging!
