today's Message Last Thursday, our Diocese held the 41st annual St . Pius X Awards Banquet at the Villa Ragusa Restaurant in Campbell . This special event was to recognize and honor those catechetical volunteers who have generously and lovingly given of themselves for 5 years or more in service to our parish community . The St . Pius X Award is for people who volunteer as catechists as well as those who contribute to catechetical ministry in other ways, for example, as aides, office assistants, special program assistants, etc . This also includes those who work with the catechumenate and those who work with Liturgy of the Word for children .

This year our parish took great pride in honoring the following for their dedication and endless commitment to the catechetical ministry: Erika Campagnan – 5 years, John McNeel – 5 years, Donna Pellizzari – 5 years, Tara Feldmeier – 6 years, Elizabeth Hutter – 6 years, Laarni VonRuden – 7 years, Tess Byler – 10 years, Luis Valdez – 10 years, Tim O’Konski – 11 years, Yvette Bovee – 13 years, Hal Fletcher – 16 years, Guadalupe Loyola – 20 years and Miriam Melendez – 25 years .

Miriam Melendez was honored with a plaque in recognition of her 25 years of service . She was presented to the Bishop with the following dedication: “Miriam is one of the pioneers in the catechetical program for the Hispanic Community . She started out helping with adult formation in RCIA in Spanish with Sr . Maria Luisa . She worked for some years with the youth confirmation program and afterward, she worked in the First Communion program . Currently, she is back working in the youth confirmation program, and she still volunteers as a catechist in the First Communion process . Miriam is also an ILM graduate, and she has also completed the Fe Mas Alla del 2000 program .”

Please join us in showing our great appreciation for the invaluable ministry of these special people and all those who give tirelessly in sharing our faith with others .

Dear Friends, I am back from Lourdes where I took part in an excellent pilgrimage organized by the Order of Malta . For a week every year, thousands of Knights and Dames of Malta and volunteers from many different countries gather in Lourdes to accompany their guest malades in pilgrimage . I had been to Lourdes a few years ago, but this pilgrimage had an entirely different significance for me . For one thing, it made all the difference to be there with this group . They organized the whole trip and planned activities (liturgies, processions, and spiritual talks) that made this week a very powerful experience . Overall, I was lifted up by the care and attention that I received as a malade, and came to better accept my illness and understand that, even though it weakens me, it joins me to Christ and His mission in a special way . I had an opportunity to bathe in the waters that flow from the spring in the grotto at Lourdes, and prayed for healing, physical or spiritual, according to God’s will .

I received another chemotherapy treatment upon my return . This is the last one scheduled at this time . I am feeling OK so far but the maximum effect is usually not felt until about a week after the treatment . In three weeks I will meet with my doctor and expect that he will order another scan to assess the results of the treatment so far . Hopefully the news will be good and plans will be made to strengthen my voice, possibly through surgery .

I wish you a blessed Easter season . Greetings, Fr. Thierry

Today, I was informed that Bishop McGrath has appointed a second Parochial Vicar to our parish . Fr . Peter Seimas, who has been celebrating Sunday Mass at both OLR and STA in Fr . Thierry's absence, will be joining us on July 1st . We are very grateful to God for this great blessing .

Our St . Thomas Aquinas Conference of St . Vincent de Paul maintains a Food Closet which is located in the Dermody Center . The food that the parishioners bring to the church is used to feed those who come to us for help . For those who have access to cooking facilities, the SVDP worker makes up a bag of groceries containing food very similar to a weekly purchase of food at the supermarket .

For those who are homeless, there are other considerations which must be addressed . The food cannot be too heavy; it should be highly nutritious, and non-perishable . We endeavor to use pull top cans whenever possible for our “hearty soups” and tuna because most people who are homeless do not have can openers . The other food items which go into the food bags are: water, 1 sleeve of saltine crackers, fruit cup, granola bar, juice pouch, a small box of Cheerios & a baggie containing a napkin & spoon .

When you are planning your Memorial Day picnic, think of those who do not have enough to eat, and plan to bring food to the church any Sunday or donate to our St . Vincent de Paul collection . The St . Vincent de Paul collection this month is on May 29 . It is the second collection .
