FROM THE PRIESTS: First, Happy Mother’s Day!! from us Frs. Tims. — The month of May is the Month of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We want to share with you our Holy Father’s favorite request for Mary’s intercession:

Pope Francis’ Prayer to Mary Undoer of Knots Holy Mary, full of God’s presence during the day of your life, you accepted with full humility the Father’s will, and the devil was never capable of tying you up with his confusion. Once with your Son you interceded for our difficulties, and full of kindness and patience, you gave us example of how to untie the knots in our life. By remaining forever Our Mother, you put in order and make more clear the ties that link us to the Lord. Holy Mother, Mother of God and our Mother, to you who untie with a motherly heart the knots of our life, we pray to you to receive in your hands (the name of the person), and to free him/her of the knots and confusion with which our enemy attacks. Through your grace, your intercession and your example deliver us from all evil, Our Lady, and untie the knots that prevent us from being united with God, so that we, free from sin and error, may find Him in all things, may have our hearts placed in Him, and may serve Him always in our brothers and sisters. 5TH SUNDAY OF EASTER, YEAR A: Readings: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19 (Response: “Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.”); 1 Pt 2:4-9; John 14:1-12 REFLECTION Either because I am back in Carroll County, where I was first assigned as a priest, or because I have entered “geezerdom”, I find again and again that I am remembering stories from seminary years or the early years of my priest-hood. (Don’t ask me about yesterday—okay, it’s definitely geezerdom!) Evidently things were a bit tense in our seminary com-munity, because the priest who was the director of spirituality for the seminary held meetings with each “year” (first–fourth year seminarians) to discuss our communal life. He said that he thought a seminary community should reflect the kind of community we see in the New Testament, especially Acts of the Apostles. We should be of one mind, always getting along, putting our gifts in service of the members of the com-munity, and having no disagreements, no dissension. The old-est member of our class—who had been in seminary before, but left to complete a Masters in Music and also a Masters in Biblical Languages and Literature, and had now returned to the seminary—said: “Can I see the New Testament that you’re reading? Because it is certainly not the one I’m read-ing!” Our eldest classmate continued to point out the argu-ments, the biases, the exclusiveness, and even the rather strong disagreements between Peter and Paul. I don’t remem-ber much after that—I think all of us were a bit stunned, most especially the spiritual director! Well, I think the problem is that there are plenty of texts that support both of these points of view. Throughout this Easter Season—in weekday Masses and Sunday Masses—we hear both types of stories. We hear stories of how people are coming to the faith, and idyllic sketches of the early commu-nities (house churches), in which, e.g., “They devoted them-selves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). We also hear stories where the Gospel isn’t being shared with Greek-speaking people, how Hebrew speaking widows are being cared for more than Greek-speaking ones (“Hellenists”; today’s passage), and how some are requiring people who are not of Jewish background to first follow Jew-ish practices (circumcision, kosher laws concerning food, and other observances) before they can become members of these early “Christian” communities (the term “Christian” is first used in Acts 11:26, which is part of a longer story about giv-ing short schrift to the Greek speakers). The conflict we encounter in Acts of the Apostles today is, on the surface, about basic discrimination and unfairness concerning the treatment of widows. The real issue, however, runs more deeply: Is Jesus the Christ limited to those of a par-ticular ethnicity, former religious practices, or other human distinctiveness? Or is he the Messiah, Lord, Savior for all people? This fundamental question was hammered out in dis-cussion, argument, and early meetings or councils of Church leaders, most especially in Jerusalem (see Acts 15). In addi-tion, we see that preachers, e.g., Barnabas and (eventually) Paul were open enough to see the Holy Spirit at work among people of different religious, ethnic, and social-economic backgrounds. Paul strongly corrects those who think such hu-man differences matter when it comes to faith in Christ Jesus: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in

Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abra-ham’s descendant, heirs according to the promise” (Gal. 3:28). So, are you and I open to seeing how the Holy Spirit is at work, even among those who are not part of our group? Do we work with the gifts of the Spirit to end bias and discrimi-nation in ourselves, and offer loving correction when we hear or see it? Are we willing to be persons of service, like the sev-en newly commissioned deacons in Acts, so that all are being served in the Church—and all who want to be part of the Church are welcomed and served? May all members of the Church be persons like those we see in Acts of the Apostles. May we all acknowledge differences among us, and be will-ing to be mutually respectful of each other in ways that help us as Church to adapt to the changing needs and circumstanc-es of our sisters and brothers—those already members of the Church, and those who are not.

Please continue to Pray For Vocations: God our Father,

we beg You for an increase in religious vocations. Help our people offer their lives in service to You.

Let them hear Your Spirit’s invitation, and awaken in their hearts a desire

to respond with courage, generosity, and joy. Raise up from our families faithful leaders

who will serve as deacons, priests, and consecrated religious, as we entrust to Your care all who seek to do Your will.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING YOUR PARISH. Please continue to use whatever method works best for you to support your parish. Sending in or dropping off your contributions is greatly

appreciated! We have had a number of people fill out the paperwork

for regular, automatic giving from their bank accounts. The CTKCC Automatic Withdrawal Request form is available on our website; click the title in the right hand column of the main page.

Thanks to those who have used the “Online Offertory” that the diocese has generously set up (click the picture in the right column of our website). — As noted last week, we are looking into ways to make easy online giving available for when we come through this time of pandem-ic.
