Those of you old enough may remember the Baltimore Catechism definition of a sacrament, “A sign instituted by Christ to give grace.” A simple and profound definition of what a sacrament is. To put it in a more colloquial way, “a sign of Jesus that gives grace.” What are the signs of Jesus that give grace? Jesus tells us in the gospel today that the sign of

Jesus, by which people would be known as his disciples is, “if you have love for one another.” Those are the signs of Jesus that give grace. So in that sense, the 1001+ ways Christians share love is sacra-mental. Jesus gave us in last weeks gospel a relational model of church:

“I know mine and mine know me.” The Word of God calls us together, not just to be in the same room, but to the new commandment we hear in today’s gospel: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” The ways we love one another, and not just one another, but all people, even our enemies, Jesus tells us are the signs that will tap and release the grace, power and fire of God’s love that Jesus came to ignite in the world. We not only have the seven great Sacraments that initiate and express our relationship with Christ and one another in the church, but we have also the opportunity to share all of creation, our gifts, talents, and treasure with love, thus making all of life sacramental. All the ways we express and share love are ways of helping us be drawn up into the saving grace and love of God. Our relationships with one another therefore, are sacred, and can be sacramental if lived with love. I just read a saying, “People in love, make signs of love, not only to express it, but to deepen it. Love never expressed, dies”. That saying makes a lot of sense. God’s grace can only grow in us if we make signs of our love and express it in real, effective ways. We do that as a parish this weekend with all our children who receive communion for the first time in the Eucharist, and also with the seven new members of our church who have make professions of faith and come to full communion with us today as Catholics. We welcome, and celebrate with all of them, the joy of God’s love today. It is a beautiful sign of Jesus from which much grace flows. Happy Easter and Congratula-tions to one and all! Love,

Dear Friends,

Fifth Sunday of Easter

In Christ your Son, O God of glory, you are making all things new. Make this new commandment of love the very foundation of our lives, so that, loving you and loving one another as Christ has loved us, we may show that we are Christ’s disciples brought to new birth by the power of the Holy Spirit. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen. C.A.R.E. CORNER

We have passed the halfway point of our Easter season and hopefully, we still have vivid memories of Easter weekend. It wasn’t that long ago that we celebrated the three holi-est days of our church calendar, the Triduum, spanning the evening of Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. Easter is the culmination of the Triduum and the high point of our entire church year, especially the Easter Vigil. You might consider the Vigil as the mother of all our worship services. Why all the hoopla at the Easter Vigil? Being the most celebrous of our worship ser-vices, we add lots of bells and whistles. We act out special stories, sing Alleluias, ring bells and confer sacraments. Why do we do all this? Because it represents a most joyous oc-casion, marking the gifts of resurrection, re-demption and salvation through the sacrifice of Christ. And good gifts require much grati-tude.

Soul Searchers Meets May 12 St. Thomas Soul Searchers will meet once a month to read, explore, experience, and discover “the fathers” and a few “mothers” of the Christian Church from the second to the seventh centuries A.D. as compiled in The Roots of Christian Mysticism by Olivier Clement. In his introduc-tion, Clement states, “I have tried to allow the chief wit-nesses of the undivided Church to speak for themselves… Many lived in times of persecution, when society veered between skepticism on one hand and various forms of ‘gnosis’ on the other.” These readings will mine the heart and soul of those who held, and were held by something so amazing and extraordinary that the world was changed by it. The reading is Part II, Chapters 3-4 (pp.149-177) of The Roots of Christian Mysticism. The text is available at Borders or Barnes and Noble. Handouts are available in the pick-up drawer under “S”. Deacon Will and Mary Maloney are group leaders. The next meeting of Soul Searchers will be Saturday, May 12 from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. in the Rectory Basement. All are welcome to attend this monthly discussion group. Come whenever your schedule allows and enjoy a wonder-ful experience.

Spirit Moments

Often times in life we receive “grace” that comes to us via a night-time dream or “message”. Holy Scripture speaks of this often in Matthew's Gospel in directives to Joseph, 1:20 and 2:13; to the Wise Men, 2:12; and to Pilate's wife, 27:19. This happens even today ! About five years ago I received a dream-message which I have remembered and which is presently very significant and helpful for me in a particular family relationship. I have come to know that dream-messages can be helpful for other people also and that is why I am sharing this particular dream-message with you. This dream-message came to me when a friend and I were visiting mutual friends in Wis-consin. We were with a group of friends and because of the lack of sleeping rooms we were asked to sleep in the same room. So we did. My friend told me when we awoke that in the early morning hours I had sat up in bed and said very slowly and distinctly, “Go into the center of your soul, for that is where Hope is !” Then, after a long pause I said, “Breathe very slowly into your timed-seconds.” My friend was so amazed with the dream-message that she immediately got up and wrote it down so she would remember it and also tell me upon my awakening what I had so clearly said. I feel very fortunate that my friend was sleeping in the same room with me, heard through my voice God's dream-message, and thought to write it down on paper. (Dream-messages are sometimes quickly forgotten.) Thank you, Joyce. You are God's dream-messenger also ! God's dream-message continues to speak to me, and now, possibly to you, as I/we are di-rected to be “in Hope and Peacefulness”. Thank you, Divine Presence, for Your Ever-sustaining Hope and Peace and Dream-Presence! Gratefully, Ann Kuhn

TREC - High School Youth Ministry

“This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another”

— John 13:35 Some clubs require entrance fees. For some schools, you have to do well on a test to get in. Some jobs require an interview. Almost everybody requires an application. Not Jesus though. If you want to get some-where in this world, there’s going to be some things you have to do. If you want to go somewhere in the spiritual world though, there’s only one thing you have to be. Here’s to being loving! That’s our focus for TREC. We have some Sabbath time in youth ministry until May 19-20, when we’ll be washing your car during all of the Masses! If you want to know what is happening this summer though, check out www.trecministries.org.

Outreach & Social Justice

Church Women United — New President Rose Bagley from St. Thomas is the new President of Church Women United. Come celebrate with Rose at the Church Women United May Friendship Day – Friday May 4 from 11:30 to 2:00 in the Lighthouse. The program includes a salad luncheon (please bring a salad), a short Bible study and a worship service. Spiritual Direction Companion Bill Fleming, facilitator for Care with God’s Crea-tion, is studying at the Institute for Spiritual Leadership to become a spiritual director. Part of the requirement for certification is some practical experience in giving direction. Bill needs someone to companion with him. The person would receive confidential spiritual direc-tion at no cost, while helping him prepare for this im-portant ministry. In Bill’s own words: “I am learning the art of supporting the individual in an open-ended process that seeks to call forth the person’s own inner wisdom and recognize God’s presence in all of life.” If you have any interest, please call Bill (630-357-6527). Two Appreciation from JOBS Ministry Participants

Last year I attended a few of the Saturday Job Ministry meetings at St Thomas and one Net-working Meeting and I was greatly benefited. I wanted to take the opportunity at this time to thank the Job Ministry Group at St Thomas for its efforts. Even the presence of a Job Ministry group is of so much help to many. I wanted you to know that I have just accepted a great opportunity with a fast growing company. I only attended one session of your Job Ministry. Based on what I saw and heard from others in networking in a variety of situations, it’s clear that your ministry is having great impact in help-ing those in transition across the Chicagoland area. I pray that you will keep your ministry alive and growing.

To St. Thomas Parish Nurse and Prayer Shawl Ministry… A letter from Fr. Louis Lohan

The box arrived yesterday with the prayer shawls and infant caps. I especially liked the prayer The Twelve Gifts of Healing – and plan to publish it in our church bulletin in the very near future. Please express our appreciation to every-one involved in making the shawls and caps. The last time we got prayer shawls from your parish, they were very well received and were distributed quickly. I am sure these will be the same. It is of great encouragement to our peo-ple to know that people like you and your pa-rishioners are thinking of us, care for us, and pray for us. I really enjoyed my visit to Naperville. Your parish is warm and hospitable. I enjoyed the opportunity to observe some of your many ministries in action. You have a great parish. Thanks for all you do. May God continue to bless you and the work that you do. Sincerely, Fr. Louis Lohan
