The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Now that Springtime has arrived, it seems like I have a wedding almost every Saturday. (If not a wedding, it is a Quinceañera.) This Sunday, I would like to teach on the Sacrament of Matri-mony. You would think that this is something we address on a regular basis, but really outside of Nuptial Masses, we priests do not really preach enough about this Sacrament. Considering that these days more than 50% of marriages end in divorce, it is definitely a topic that needs to be ad-dressed. The Bible begins with the creation of man and woman in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1), and it ends with the Wedding-feast of the Lamb (Rev 19). Man was created for woman, and woman was created for man. We also know that Original Sin introduced disorder into how man and woman relate to each other. Jesus works His first miracle at the Wedding Feast at Cana to inaugu-rate a redemption of marriage itself. Jesus institutes matrimony as a sacrament and teaches on its indissolubility. "What God has joined let man not separate." The Sacrament of Matrimony therefore joins husband and wife in a bond of love till death do them part. Marriage is ordered to the union of the spouses, the procreation of children, and the upbringing and education of those children. On their wedding day, a couple exchanges vows in an act of faith and trust in the providence of God. There are four 'F's to remember about what love the marriage covenant requires. The Sac-rament of Matrimony, for it to be a sacrament, must be free, full, faithful and fruitful. And why? Be-cause God's love is free, full, faithful, and fruitful. And marriage must reflect God's love, and specifi-cally, Christ's love for His bride, the Church (Eph 5). Married love must be free, because if it's forced, it's not free. A couple is questioned in their Nuptial Mass if they have come freely. The freedom and gratuity of married love reflects the free and gratuitous love of Jesus Christ. Married love must be full. There can be no "holding back". Husband and wife must give themselves completely to each other and to their future children. Once again, this reflect Christ's love, who shed every drop of Blood he had because he had every drop of Blood to give. Married love must be faithful. When you give yourself completely to your spouse, you are saying 'no' to every other man and woman in the world. And that means not just "not committing adultery" but also avoiding dangerous friendships at work and on social media. And finally, married love must be fruitful. In our times, we sometimes forget that God instituted marriage not just so hus-band and wife could make love and "be safe," but so that babies could be generated for the king-dom. When we lose sight that marriage is ordered toward procreation, we lose sight of God's plan for our marriages and ourselves. Marriage is not easy. We are all affected by divorce. This is why our Diocese is asking for at least nine months of marriage formation before the wedding day. We have to pray for our marriages. This Sunday, we pray for married couples and for those who have suffered the anguish of divorce, and we pray for ourselves — that we will always be faithful to our spouses.

El Sacramento del Santo Matrimonio Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: Ahora que ha llegado la primavera, parece que tengo una boda casi todos los sábados. (Si no es una boda, es una quinceañera.) Este domingo, me gustaría enseñar sobre el Sacramento del Matrimonio. Usted pensaría que esto es algo que abordamos de manera regular, pero realmente fuera de las Misas Nupciales, nosotros los sacerdotes no predicamos lo suficiente sobre este Sacra-mento. Teniendo en cuenta que en estos días más del 50% de los matrimonios terminan en divor-cio, definitivamente es un tema que debe abordarse. La Biblia comienza con la creación del hombre y la mujer a su imagen y semejanza de Dios (Gen 1), y termina con la fiesta de bodas del Cordero (Ap 19). El Sacramento del Matrimonio, por lo tanto, une a marido y mujer en un vínculo de amor hasta que la muerte los separe. El matrimonio se ordena a la unión de los cónyuges, la pro-creación de los hijos y la crianza y educación de esos hijos. En el día de la boda, una pareja intercambia votos en un acto de fe y confianza en la provi-dencia de Dios. Hay cuatro 'F' para recordar acerca de lo qué el amor requiere en el pacto matrimo-nial. Cuan-do te entregas completamente a tu cónyuge, estás diciendo "no" a todos los demás hombres y mu-jeres del mundo. Y eso significa no solo "no cometer adulterio" sino también evitar amistades peli-grosas en el trabajo y en las redes sociales. Y finalmente, el amor conyugal debe ser fructífero. En nuestros tiempos, a veces olvidamos que Dios instituyó el matrimonio no solo para que el esposo y la esposa pudieran hacer el amor y "estar seguros", sino para que los bebés puedan ser generados para el reino. Cuando perdemos de vista que el matrimonio está ordenado hacia la procreación, perdemos de vista el plan de Dios para nuestros matrimonios y para nosotros mismos. El matrimonio no es fácil. Todos estamos afectados por el divorcio. Es por eso que nuestra Diócesis está pidiendo al menos nueve meses de formación matrimonial antes del día de la boda.
