NEWS AND NOTES

The Town has taken over the time-consuming chore of programming. Jen McEachen (pronounced McKeon) looks after the planning and scheduling of all registered programs, the hiring of instructors with all the associated paperwork and the creation of the monthly calendar. She also ensures that membership records are received by the town. She will arrange to have alll 2019 memberships are extended to December 31, 2019 (in spite of what it will say on your receipt). This is all a full time job in itself! In addition, she looks after other areas for the Town, including public-private partnerships such as Sport Ball and Play Ball, as well as school permits. Her duties sometimes require her to work from the Leisure Centre. She has a very full plate! Once the walls are bare again, try to remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day. We’ve basically just moved in and are still getting settled. Give us some time to deal with interior decorating issues! Patience please!

TRIPS

Melodie Newmarch will be arranging day trips for the new year! We’ll let you

know as soon as we know!

DINNERS OUT

For the dark winter months, Barb Pollard will be doing lunches at noon instead of dinners. The first lunch will be January 9 at Tipperary Taphouse in the Giant Tiger Plaza. Please sign up at the front desk. As always, thanks to Barb Pollard for putting these things together!

CAFÉ 55

The group will meet at Vi Pei on January 16. Come at 9:30am and join this fun crowd! Enjoy great social time and wonderful food! Thanks as ever, Diane!

SMILES

Three sisters, age 92, 94 and 96, live in a house together. One night the 96-year-old draws a bath, puts her foot in and pauses. She yells down the stairs, “Was I getting in or out of the bath?” The 94-year-old yells back, “I don’t know. I’ll come up and see.” She starts up the stairs and pauses, then she yells, “Was I going up the stairs or coming down?” the 92-year-old was sitting at the kitchen table, having tea, listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says, “I sure hope I never get that forgetful!” She knocks on wood for good measure. She then yells, “I’ll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who’s at the door!”

BIRTHDAY PEOPLE

Beverly Anne Hill, Diane Kennedy, George Iwasiw, Jan Douglas, Joan McCool, Marie Brillinger, Marie Chabot, Nelda Morley, Peg Kirby, (blank), Jim Bays, Dot Gourley, Thea Hulshof, Doris Lajoie, Liz Lightfoot, Ruby Lippett, Don Rattle, Erika Tessmer, Janet Baigent, Karen Bowman, Shirley Eriksen, Vicki Hughes, Mary Lou Knoblaugh, Mirielle Lan, Denise Lee, John Marshall, Kathy Nesbitt, Louisette Pelletier, Barbara Pollard, Al Roeder, Laurel Clinton, Marianne Espey, Alma Gilroy, Stuart Kerridge, Joan Lessard, Amy Leung, Laureen Lucas, Jeanette McPherson, Patricia Murphy, Ramie Veerappan, Maureen Zinner. BOOK CLUB

For February, we’re reading “His Whole Life” by Elizabeth Hay. Jim lives in New York with his Canadian mother and American father, George, until the sudden deaths of his aunt and uncle lead him and his parents back up to the lakeside property to tie up loose ends. Both a coming-of-age story and a study of a marriage in decline.

TRAVEL CLUB

For January, Marg Curtis will be presenting “Hiking in Tuscany.” Marg stayed 6 nights in one location and 5 in another, going out on day trips. During 11 days, they hiked through wooded areas, across fields, along narrow roads and on a beach. They visited Florence and Siena and travelled by boat to tour the island of Elba. Get up close and personal with Tuscany on January 18! For February, Teresa Kusatz is going to be presenting the photos of her recent trip to Ireland and Scotland! We have Dave Brooks lined up for March with his Newfoundland trip.

DID YOU KNOW?

We have received a “thank you” note from the organizers of the “Something for Her” Christmas project. All together, they made up 837 gift bags which were given to Yellow Brick House, Blue Hills, Blue Doors Shelter, Sandgate Women’s Shelter, York Region Centre for Community Safety and Rose of Sharon. Thank you again for your generosity! You’ve probably noticed we’ve uncovered the glass display case. We have a few Christmas-type things in there for people to look at. Does anybody have a collection of interesting things for the display case? We’ve obtained a lock for it so your treasures will be safe in there. We’re hoping to change the display frequently, just to keep things fresh. Let us know if you have an interesting collection of whatever. Is there anyone out there who can put together a PowerPoint presentation? We’re going to be doing a slideshow at our grand launch (whenever that turns out to be) and we’d like to have a PowerPoint running. Audrey Gibson was honoured on December 3 for her 38 years of service to Meals on Wheels. She’s stepping down from that position but Audrey is still involved with CHATS, still involved with cards as the convenor of both bid euchre and bridge, still involved with selling Share the Wealth tickets at our lunches. She’s one amazing lady! The CHATS group meets on the first and third Mondays of each month from 10am to 1pm. They had a fantastic turnout for their holiday lunch. Each session features coffee and company, a presentation plus a bit of exercise and a delicious lunch for $8.00. If you are interested in coming for CHATS, please call Glenys Mackay at 416-458-2149.

TABLE TENNIS TIPS

Last week some people came out who hadn’t played much since their school days, but it’s like riding a bike—you never forget! Kelly, who coordinates the darts, was there and John joined him during a break from table tennis. Marilyn has provided us with some great ideas to improve your shuffleboard experience. Come out on Monday afternoons from 1:45 to 3:45 to try all three things, along with a game of pool! There are lots of racquets at the Club but if you have a favourite please bring it. You may want to buy yourself one. They don’t cost much. There are all kinds of configurations but most people prefer the covering to be pimples-in. The club racquets have pimples-out. If you borrow someone’s personal racquet it should be much quieter because it has a sponge layer sandwiched between the covering and the wood. The thinner the sponge, the more controlled and stable your shot (under about 1.5mm) and the thicker the faster your shot (2 mm or more). The object is stability and control. You can have the best of both worlds purchasing a racquet with the thicker sponge on one side and the thinner sponge on the other. When you go shopping, you’ll notice that the racquets each have a rating and specs on the package. Turning the racquet sideways, your eye will tell you about the sponge thickness. There may be a designation like “control” on it. The handles vary in shape so make sure the racquet feels good in your hand before you buy it.

Mary demonstrates table tennis with style! Can you see the ball?
