It’s spring, and along with budding trees and flowers emerging once again, the arts are in full bloom in Media. There’s evidence of this on every corner of town: exhibits displayed in shop windows, announcements of spring plays and performances on coffee shop bulletin boards, painters and photographers bringing canvases and camera equipment to the park again. Soon there’ll be music and dancing during Dining Under the Stars, pottery at the Media Farmer’s Market, live music on the Plum Street Mall, and the return of the Americana Roots Ramble.

For what some might consider a small town, Media is a hidden gem rich in creative forces and artistic outlets. Housing a diverse crew of artists and artisans, musicians and dancers, photographers and writers, and established creative resources such as The Media Theatre, the Hedgerow Theatre, the Delaware County Symphony, the International Ballet Classique, and America’s Music Festival Series in Media, this town is truly an artistic force to be reckoned with.

Media’s diverse arts scene is strengthened by supporting organizations such as the Media Arts Council and Community Arts Center, both dedicated to upholding and integrating local arts into the life of the community at large. The Community Arts Center has been a Delaware County resource since 1948, providing a nurturing environment for artists and encouraging participation in the arts through classes, exhibitions, and events. For nearly a decade, the Media Arts Council has been increasing opportunities for artists to exhibit or perform their work in the borough and establishing a platform for community involvement. With events such as 2nd Saturday, the Media Film Festival, ART Market (which takes place seasonally at the Media Farmers’ Market), and ICONS photo, the Media Arts Council ensures that the arts remain close to the center of what Media is all about.

A local arts scene would be nothing without its artists, which is why Fig® also celebrates local creatives on our cover like Drew Arata of Earth & State, potter Bob Deane, musician Leroy Hawkes, and dancer Lori Coyle as our “Authentic” in this issue, all of whom are committed not only to their personal artistic endeavors, but to supporting the progression of the arts in their community and offering others the opportunity to flourish too.

Enjoy! The Fig® Media Team

Giving Backbill conville—adventurer, art lover

According to Bill, his passion for the arts came into focus while studying at the Sorbonne in Paris during his junior year. “No one who lives in Paris as a student for an extended period of time can escape being saturated by the arts,” says Bill. He also once traveled to the outskirts of Southern Morocco, convincing a nomadic camel train of Berber tribal members to include him on their trek into the Sahara desert. Bill refers to this experience as “an existential transformation” that provided “a series of lifetime insights on how to best appreciate the precious gift of life.”

In 2001, Bill retired from a long career in finance and began volunteering in Delaware County’s many arts communities. “The first time I walked down State Street in Media I had the distinct tactile sensation of a business district and a town that were warm, friendly, energetic, and welcoming,” Bill recalls. “I have never seen a town where business owners are so intensely attuned to and supportive of the arts. In speaking with store owners over the years I found they are very informed about the latest plays, ballets, musicals, poetry readings, gallery exhibits and they would welcome more artists to perform and enjoy their town.”

Bill contributes extensively to The International Ballet Classique, whose mission is to “preserve the classical method of ballet, advance creativity in the art of dance, and bring the art of ballet to a wide and diverse audience.” He is also heavily involved with the Delaware County Symphony, which performs a range of work each season and brings a diverse group of exceptional guest artists of local, national, and international acclaim to each concert. Both organizations contribute greatly to Media’s “cultural fabric,” and offer opportunities to experience world-class performances without leaving Delaware County.

“As a volunteer to cultural art organizations I continue to be amazed at the many, many hours of joyful energy that area residents contribute to make performances happen for their neighbors,” says Bill. “We have clustered in Media and throughout Delaware County a cultural feast of creativity every week of the year.”

Stage One, providing critically needed spaces to community performing arts groups without homes, opened in the Summit School in Wallingford in December 2010. The response has been extraordinary. Over 50 diverse groups including drama, dance, music theater, bands, orchestras, opera, films, singing groups, and the Suburban Music School now use Stage One. Even though Stage One is busy, there is always room for more.

Stage One is the brainchild of Alfred and Ellie Hurd. Performing on stage for over 40 years as members of the Rose Valley Chorus & Orchestra, the Hurds endured the frustration and problems of frequent venue changes. Retirement in 2000 gave them time first to frame and then to pursue a vision of a dedicated home for community performing arts groups in Delaware County. The vision took the form of a building with two theaters—one with 800 seats and a smaller black box—with

associated rehearsal and dressing rooms and set-building facilities. Also included would be a music school, a ballroom, and a common lobby with a box office and coffee service to connect these spaces. Stage One, a smaller version, is the first step towards this vision. Already a larger facility is needed. It's time to focus on the next step—to create the final $30 million building with the working title of “Stage Two.” Much help is needed: specifically a core of people who support performing arts and have the vision and the means to build Stage Two. The Hurds gave up the fun of performing on stage to focus on the vision. They want to return to the stage while they can still caper and learn songs and blocking—they are anxious to get started on Stage Two.

in sanskrit, the word for community is sangha—“a safe space, a home in which to learn and practice,” says Lori Coyle, proprietor of Media’s Sangha Space at 116 W. Baltimore Avenue. The meaning behind the name comes to life as a room full of dancers of all ages tango across the hardwood, twinkle lights sparkling from the vaulted ceiling. Original benches from 1894 line the walls where women once waited to be asked onto the floor. Now that paradigm has shifted: on tango nights at Sangha Space beginners dance with seasoned professionals, partners of both genders take turns leading, and no one waits to be asked.

Connecting People Through Movement was the inspiration behind Sangha Space. A Media local, Lori started running Tango Hop social dances in the borough in 2005. “Our goal was to bring the fascinating experience of Argentine Tango to the town we loved, and soon a community of local dancers began to grow.” It is through tango that Lori met her husband, Eran, who happily moved to Media and started the Tango Jam.

But Sangha Space has much more than just tango: Yoga is offered daily, West Coast Swing, Flamenco and Belly Dancing are offered weekly, and Mindfulness workshops are offered monthly, with more coming soon. Sangha Space also opens to the public for art and photography exhibits, Second Saturday events, community potlucks, and holiday dances.

“I believe that if you change the way you move, you change your relationship with your body and this changes the way you view the world, all for the better.”

Lori’s dedication to building community through creative and healing arts at Sangha Space has established a true gem in the Media borough: a place to experience a sense of connection with others and self through movement and art. “When you’re in the business of building community, every decision then becomes based on, is it good for the community? Because this place wouldn’t exist without it, and we work really hard to support the town we love.”

Newly established on the west end of State Street, My Three Sons treats customers to made-to-order “haute” dogs, a vast selection of gourmet beer, and a friendly environment the whole family can enjoy—complete with a vintage Pac Man machine. Since celebrating their grand opening in December, My Three Sons has been garnering acclaim for their creative array of 10-inch, all beef (gluten-free and vegan too) hotdogs including the top-selling Trailer Dog (topped with homemade chili, nacho cheese, and Fritos corn chips), and the Hometown Dog, an homage to Media topped with mac n’ cheese, caramelized onions, and bacon. My Three Sons hot dogs start with a 10-inch roll delivered fresh from New Jersey, a “soft version of an Italian hoagie roll” that leaves an inch of space to either side of the dog —enough to help handle an abundance of delicious toppings with care. “We drive to New York every two weeks and get five hundred pounds of hot dogs,” says owner Dr. Steven Gariffo. “I've tried every hot dog out there to find the perfect one.” For Steven and his wife Roxann, opening a restaurant in Media was “a no-brainer.” Steven and his family have lived in Middletown for over a decade and consider Media their hometown. The Gariffos are enthusiastic about bringing My Three Sons to the borough and see the open space and abundance of parking on the west end as an asset to customers. With Dining Under the Stars expanding to include their block, My Three Sons intends to incorporate family-friendly activities (cotton candy, popcorn, balloon animals, and magic) into their Wednesday night events this summer. To Steven, a practicing doctor of physical therapy and self-proclaimed “beer geek,” the concept of My Three Sons was a labor of love. “I wanted to give my boys a legacy,” he said, “but I can’t pass down my medical degree.” The Gariffos hope to watch My Three Sons grow along with their children—Luca (13), Matteo (11), and Marcello (8).

media is home to a variety of merchants and culturally diverse restaurants. Many merchants are sole-proprietors, which gives customers direct access to these owners and experts... a unique experience that keeps Media’s visitors returning.

One way the Media Business Authority helps to increase Media business patronage is through activities and events. The town becomes a stage for the MBA's year-long calendar of events. Restaurants are host venues for the music festivals, and merchants become sprawling galleries on 2nd Saturdays in partnership with the Media Arts Council. Streets are closed each Wednesday night in the summer for Dining Under the Stars and for annual events such as the Food Festival. In Media, the year ends and begins with a Times Square-inspired Ball Drop, complete with live music and dancing on State Street.

Events like these “make the town fun, bring in new faces, and drive commerce,” says Kevin Schramm, Chair of the Media Business Authority. Held within strolling distance, MBA events are the perfect excuse for visitors to explore all that Media has to offer. With diverse and interesting business districts, Media is quite walkable (and easily accessible by public transportation).

“Our events provide us an opportunity to advertise the town itself in a broad and more memorable way,” says Kevin. “This helps to keep Media top of mind for people when they are considering where to shop and dine.” The Media Business Authority is committed to enhancing the overall image of the community, attracting new clientele to Media, and providing businesses with opportunities to promote themselves and interact with potential customers. “Between events, we engage actively in social media to keep the conversation going with our visitors and provide them with information about our merchants.”

A Rose Valley resident for over decade, Media has “always been our downtown,” Kevin says. When not working on behalf of the Media Business Authority, Kevin and his wife Monica own and operate Local Home + Gifts.

Penns Woods Winery excels at taking the age-old art of winemaking and incorporating cutting-edge production equipment to blend old-world styles with modern techniques. Tractors, tanks, and filters may advance and change, but the art of growing and farming our grapes never changes. It is this knowledge and age-old techniques that will be passed down from one generation to the next.
