    Scene 1

    The wardrobe room of a lateeighteenth century Spanishcastle near Seville. The only

    furniture is a rather largechair outfitted for barberingwith a sheet folded over onearm and a harlequinesquelivery jacket on the other armand a writing table with

    paper, ink bottle and quill pen. On pegs on one side of

    the room are the ountess!mantillas and colorful

    parasols. On the other sideare the ount"s threeidentical cloaks withdecorations on them.

    #igaro enters in streetclothes carrying a brandybottle, two crystal gobletsand a yellowed hempclothesline which he carefully stretches perpendicular acrossthe width of the room. $echanges into the harlequinjacket and becomes thecharacter while he spreads outthe sheet over the chair andchoosing one of the parasols.$e opens the brandy bottle and takes a swig out of it. %ith
