Full-length three-piece evening gown. On the lightly padded strapless Lycra bra forming the basis of the bodice are sewn two oval shawls (one brown, the other blue) in crepe and lace with tassel fringe. The shawls fold over at the neckline to create four front flounces knotting in back. The longer brown flounce, which snaps onto the skirt, has blue chiffon reverse edging. The skirt with train starts from a long black taffeta basque and multilayer nylon tulle petticoat, stitched together with two parallel seams. Along the bottom of the basque is sewn a white&red stripe gathered skirt partially covered by two pointed hem overskirts – one in plisse blue chiffon with black lace trim, the other in brown lace. At the waist and lower basque are sewn three crepe/fringed lace shawls (in alternating colors) which fold over in different ways so as to fashion in front flounces of varying width and shape. The ends of all three shawls knot at mid back. The lace on the blue one has small matching strass ornamentation. The finishing touch is an oblong mantoncillo with central part in blue crepe, lace edging in the same color. On one side the lace is decorated with strass and trimmed with tassel fringe. Inscription: “Rachel US 59” on dress. The show’s final seven exits – presenting the evening gowns – are clearly influenced by the traje de flamenca (flamenco dress) and above all by the mantoncillo traditionally accompanying it. While gypsy colors, flounces and trims distinguish these sumptuous creations, what really inspires Ferré in his redesign of this costume history classic is the shawl. In the words of the press release: “The catalyzing element of seduction is the airy georgette flamenco shawl with ever-swingy tassels and fringes. It hugs hips accentuating their rhythmic sway. It knots around the shoulders, over breasts, to form the sexiest of tops, ends draping on the back. Mixed together, shawls become sinuously skinny skirts, almost to the knee, that extend downward to create a train effect.” 40 (8) Designer Collection Season Year Label Inventory Materials Working processes Description Remarks Size Sources Picture Object 59 Look Pg. # 1 Printed on 2-9-2010 © Fondazione Gianfranco Ferré - All rights reserved
