○ Activity with percussion instruments. Began with freeform warmup. Gave him a chance to get set up while giving us a chance to play. Moved to more structured practice of three different things harmonica, shaker and clap. Had entire group practice and then record. Added content in (solid, liquid, gas, etc.)
○ #50StatesAlbum ○ Time issue ○ Tweet out a summary of the video (topic was on lecturing) knowledgable and
trusted source of information ○ Why are the video lectures significantly shorter than traditional? (Table
Brainstorm) ● personal stories
● behavior managment ● video causes teachers to focus ● not distracted ● if you know you have 50 minutes you’ll take 50 minutes ● video required more thought and more intentional focus ● free your mind from clutter ● notetaking
○ Efficiency video (efficient practice)

○ Related Topics the table group discussed: Teach Like a Pirate
10:00-11:00 Tim Childers: Teaching with Just One Image We take in an enormous amount of information through our eyes/visually. Many times in the classroom we use text in bulleted form instead! “I think it’s possible to teach an entire lesson with just one image.” T. Childers :focus (students need something to focus on!) Guide that focus with an image that reflects the theme of the message. Image: “Out of Town Trolley” http://bit.ly/1jJsyLv
1. What do you see in this picture? 2. What do you infer about this?
Connection to ELA: Difference between what’s actually in the text (what the text says) and what do you infer about the text? Image: “Federal Troops at Rest” (Discovery Image) http://www.archives.gov/research/military/civilwar/photos/images/civilwar002.jpg Tools: Magic Pen (Smart Board) or Spotlight (Promethean) Cover parts of images to focus student attention
Voice Thread ThingLink Google Draw Manipulate the Ken Burns effect or use Photo Story on PC iPad app: Explain Everything, Screen Chomp (fingerpinch Ken Burns effect) Instructional Strategies: Frame Questions for deeper conversations:
● Why do you think the picture was taken the way it was? ● What would you write about this picture if you were publishing a news article? ● Predict the next…. ● Take a screen shot from a Discovery video to get a still image to use
Challenge: Take your own photos of interesting places you go that relate to things you could discuss.
11:10-12:00 Kathy Schrock: Utilizing Mobile Devices for Activators and Summarizers ***Many of these align with the SOS Strategies***
http://www.schrockguide.net/activatorsandsummarizers.html Activators= Summarizers= What are activators and summarizers? Why should I use them? How can I use them with mobile devices Jon Saphier, Mary Ann Haley books on Activators and Summarizers Ncole Frazier and Donna Mehle Activators Why use them: Minimize tension in students, leads to preparing students for the learning experience, help students remember better, provide closure to learning experience Deepen understanding construct knowledge and personal meaning develop organized pattern of thought place new information within a larger framework students feel more empowered
teachers can surface confusions and misinterpretations, serve as formative assessment, inform how to adapt/change lesson How do we use them? think about classroom setup establish classroom agreement collaboration skills: learn and practice, provide rules/norms/expectations create community first, not content
