Tony Award-winning songstress, Lea Salonga, along with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performed to a sold out crowd at the Regent Casino Event Centre earlier this month.

During her two-hour performance with the Winnipeg

Symphony Orchestra, Salonga took advantage of the unique opportunity to sing the full version "Reflections", from the Disney animated movie Mulan. Lea Salonga also wowed the crowd with another popular Disney song, "Let It Go" from Fozen. Salonga

closed out her performance by rocking out to some of her favourite Broadway numbers. She also made everyone in the audience to stand up, dance and sing along to "Dancing Queen" from Mama Mia.

Much Ado about After-a-Period Spacing: A Matter of Choice, Really (Just Be Consistent)

The use of single space versus double space in typing documents has

long been a matter of debate for many writers. Many individuals from either camp insist that their spacing style is the correct one, and they never run out of reasons to back their respective claims up.

However, to me—as a writer and as a big proponent of freedom of expression—I consider both styles acceptable and correct, so long as the writer is consistent about it.Looking Back to the Typewriter Age

Since the commercial accessibility of the computer (the writing / document-processing software Microsoft Word, in particular), circa early '90s, I have been using a single space after a period. But, I remember back in my elementary and highschool days (and even in early university), in the 1980s, when the available tool for writing term papers was the typewriter, I used to put two spaces after a period. I learned this from school and from my mother who worked as a secretary in her younger days. That was the standard for many writers and publications during that era. Some said that it had something to do with the printing process; some said it was for aesthetic reason; some said they didn't know but they just followed what they've been used to doing. Personally, I simply followed what I learned at school as a standard.Being a Single Spacer

Now, why do I use one space instead of two? Initially, it's just for brevity and to save space. In the context of a 30-page essay or a 300-page novel, using one space after every period instead of two will have given me extra few pages at the most—depending on the length of my sentences.

But thinking about it, having saved an extra page or two is not a really big deal. That's when I realized that the spacing after a period, after all, boils down to personal preference or depends on the requirement or preference of the publisher one is writing for. Meaning, there should really be no question of which is right and which is wrong between the use of single space and the use of double space. The only key that I take into consideration is the consistency of use: One, at the least, has to maintain the same spacing after a period (whether single or double) all throughout a single document or project. After all, if the reason is aesthetics, then this is subjective; if to save space, then extra few pages (in the context of a lengthy novel) or just a few lines (in the case of a 10-page article) that amounted from all the extra single spaces saved are not really a big waste.

If the writer prefers single space (like me), then s/he should be free to apply it--so long as the use of a single space is consistent all throughout a particular work. If s/he prefers double spacing, which is practically just being consistent with the typewriter age, then s/he should be—in the same freedom of expression—free to do so. Then again, as long as the use of double spacing is maintained in one single document or body of work. The Last Leaf

What I am not in support of is some people's penchant to instill that unnecessary sense of guilt for almost anything that other individuals choose to take especially when such a choice is different from theirs even if the action does not gravely harm anyone anyway.

So, single space or double space? Take your pick. Just be consistent!

Aha! a-ha!The Return of a-ha...Again

Formed in Oslo, Norway, in 1982, the band a-ha—led by Paul Waaktaar-Savoy,

Morten Harket, and Magne Furuholmen—had disbanded five years ago. That was a sad news especially for those who have loved a-ha's music for years.

Many New Wave enthusiasts certainly have in their collection

a-ha's debut album, Hunting High and Low (1985), where the band's most popular songs may be found—such as "Take on Me," "The Sun Always Shines on T.V.," and "Love Is Reason."

However, to those who have a longer attention span and who are able to follow the development of a-ha and New Wave music in general, a-ha is greater than this first album; a-ha's studio discography is actually comprised by nine albums:Hunting High and Low (1985)Scoundrel Days (1986)

Stay on These Roads (1988)East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1990)Memorial Beach (1993)Minor Earth, Major Sky (2000)Lifelines (2002)Analogue (2005)Foot of the Mountain (2009)

And while many fans thought that the last album was indeed the final one, here comes a recent news item that said the trio have decided to reunite once again not only for a tour this year but also with a new album in the works (entitled Cast of Steel), slated for release in September 2015.

I'm excited. This should not be surprising. After all, what fan of a-ha, or New Wave music for that matter, will not be stoked about this?

To those who wanted to catch up before the release of the 10th album, I recommend the following playlist, which I have titled The Ultimate a-ha Discography Experience. This is comprised by two of my most favorite songs off each album."Living a Boy's Adventure Tale""The Sun Always Shines on T.V.""We're Looking for the Whales""Maybe, Maybe""Touchy!""You Are the One""Early Morning""Waiting for Her""Dark Is the Night for All""Angel in the Snow""Velvet""The Sun Never Shone That Day""Afternoon High"

"Dragonfly""Don't Do Me Any Favours""Analogue (All I Want)""Riding the Crest""Real Meaning"

The music of a-ha has been classified as New Wave, Synthpop, and Pop Rock. With the band's nine-album discography, the suggested genres are indeed befitting. However, what gives a-ha's music its best distinctive characteristics are Harket's wide-ranging silky voice, Furuholmen's melodic keyboards and synthesizers, Waaktaar's subtle guitar parts, and the band's overall flare for writing songs

with meticulous arrangement and instrumentation infused with strong pop sensibilities and penchant for soaring and catchy choruses.Final Note

This year is the 30th anniversary of Hunting High and Low, a-ha's first album, which certainly continues to enjoy a 'no-skip, repeat-mode' treatment from any New Wave music enthusiast. Let's celebrate the Norwegian band's music by listening to their music annd by purchasing a copy of the new album when it finally comes out in September 2015.

Winnipeg Jets Report

by Derick Ramos@DerickRamos

Ondrej the GiantWith just six games

remaining in the regular season, the Winnipeg Jets

are getting some big contributions from each line and currently sit in the second wild card position. However, one Jet has risen to the challenge when called upon and has provided his best performances of the year. Goaltender Ondrej Pavelec has been a gigantic factor in the Jets final push for the postseason and his resurgence has his team playing more confident.

Fresh off a win against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Pavelec started once again taking on the San Jose Sharks. The Jets got off to a flying start, scoring three first period goals which was more than enough support for Pavelec, stopping 38 of 40 Sharks shots. Sharks forward Joe Pavelski scored twice and Jets Blake Wheeler responded with a pair of his own in a 5-2 Jets win.

Drew Stafford has made quite an impression in his short time as a Jet. Down a goal in the third period against the St. Louis Blues, Stafford threw a shot on net that fooled Brian Elliot to help force overtime. Throughout the game, the Jets relied on Pavelec's jaw-dropping saves and was even more heroic in the shootout. The Jets goaltender made a sprawling pad save on Alex Steen's shootout attempt to give the Jets a 2-1 win. After the game, captain Andrew Ladd talked about Pavelecs's 33 save performance.

"For him to come back with the effort he had says a lot about him. I couldn't be prouder the way he played tonight and he really kept us in it," Ladd said. "He played great tonight."

The Washington Capitals have had the Jets number ever since they were in the Southeast division but Mark Scheifele had other ideas. Scheifele scored a goal and an assist and Pavelec shut the door turning away all 28 Capital shots in a 3-0

shutout. The Jets set out on a mini two

game western road trip taking on the Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks on back to back nights. Free agent additions Drew Stafford, Lee Stempniak, and Tyler Myers scored the opening three goals and Pavelec saved 33 Oiler shots in a 4-1 win to extend their winning streak to five games. The following night, Michael Hutchinson started in net against the Canucks and the Jets got out to a quick 2-0 lead. The Canucks rallied and scored five unanswered goals including a pair from Radim Vrbata ending the Jets win streak with a 5-2 victory.

The Jets went back to their hot goalie against the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs started Dustin Tokarski in net over potential Hart candidate Carey Price and the Jets took advantage. Mark Scheifele

and Jim Slater both had a goal and an assist and Pavelec won his sixth straight start saving 39 shots in a 5-2 Jets win.

The Jets welcomed the struggling Chicago Blackhawks to the MTS Centre and provided the fans with a back and forth affair. Dustin Byfuglien scored a pair of goals and Blake Wheeler tallied shorthanded but it was Winnipegger Jonathan Toews scoring with 31 seconds left to give the Hawks a 4-3 win and ending Pavelec's six game win streak.

The Jets will need Pavelec to continue his strong play in the final six games. Winnipeg will close out their homestand against the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. They will then set out on a crucial three game road trip against the Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, and the Colorado Avalanche before closing the season at home against the Calgary Flames.

Mayweather vows to exploit Pacquiao’s weaknesses

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vowed to take advantage of Manny Pacquiao’s weaknesses when they slug it out in their $300million (£200m) mega-fight on May 2.

While the undefeated American said he respects Pacquiao’s ring achievements, he said he plans to neutralize whatever works for Pacquiao during fights and pounce on his mistakes. Pacquiao, for his part, will try to hand Mayweather the first ever loss of his professional career as the Filipino boxing icon continues to step up his preparations.

It was announced earlier in the week that the duo had agreed to conduct the mega-fight under the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) testing program. Both fighters have agreed to unannounced blood and urine testing without reservation and will be tested out of competition prior to the fight and in competition after the fight

Grandma impresses ‘Asia’s Got Talent’ judges

Felicitas “Lola Fe” Garcia, an old woman who makes a living selling vegetables, has a voice ala Bonnie Tyler. Recently Lola Fe and her discoverer Roadfill Obeso, half of the comic duo Moymoy Palaboy, took it to the next level and performed their odd combination in front of international judges of “Asia’s Got Talent” at the Mall of Asia.

The event was filled with laughter and amazement, and as the song went to climax, the audience started to get wild of Lola Fe’s singing prowess as well as the Roadfill’s funny antics. At the end of the song, three judges namely, singers Anggun, Melanie C and Van Ness Wu, were on their feet and voted in the affirmative, sending the duo to the next stage of the competition. However Canadian music producer and Grammy-winning judge David Foster said no because he wants Lola Fe to go solo and drop Roadfil.

Roadfill revealed in the e-mail interview that he discovered Lola Fe, now 54, on Facebook, which led to videos of their duets, posted on his YouTube channel “roadfill” in 2013. He said he was willing to follow Foster’s suggestion if that was the only way Lola Fe could advance. He hopes to see her get more opportunities, adding that he feels great to inspire others regardless of age.

Toni Gonzaga sees no need for a prenuptial agreementToni Gonzaga sees no need to sign a prenuptial agreement between her and director Paul Soriano in connection with their forthcoming wedding this year.

A prenuptial agreement is a contract entered into prior to marriage by the people intending to marry or contract with each other, in order to protect their assets if their marriage fails. The 31-year-old actress-TV host said she wants her marriage to lasts and they would want to hold and make things works should any strain

in the relationship arises. She added that she and Paul never talked about the issue.

In an earlier interview, Paul acknowledged that her fiancée earns more than he does. He insisted, though, that he has enough savings to provide Toni for the rest of her life. He added that they just want to live a simple life forever.

Currently, Toni is promoting her new movie “You’re My Boss” with Coco Martin, which will open in cinemas on April 4.

Coco Martin, Julia Montes not yet an itemCoco Martin said he and Julia Montes are not yet in a relationship, although he considers the young actress as a “girlfriend material” among the crop of leading ladies whom he had the opportunity to work with in his past projects.

The actor said he is currently focused in his career as he wants to take advantage of the opportunities coming to him, adding that he may

not sustain having a girlfriend at the moment. He also said that it would be difficult to balance his time for himself and his family.

Coco and Julia has been the subject of rumors romantically linking them to each other after they were first paired in the 2012 teleserye “Walang Hanggan.” In an earlier interview, the actress also admitted that she has a crush on the actor.

MTRCB honors LiezlOn March 25, two days before what would have been her 47th birthday, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) honored former board member Anna Lissa “Liezl” Muhlach Sumilang Martinez by naming MTRCB fourth floor board room as the Liezl S. Martinez Hall.

The touching event was attended by her husband, actor Albert

Martinez, children Alfonso, Alyanna and Alissa, father Romeo Vasquez, MTRCB Chairman Eugenio “Toto” Villareal, board members, and the office staff who loved their Ma’am Liezl dearly.

Born Anna Lisa Sumilang Martinez, she was the daughter of showbiz legend Amalia Fuentes and actor Romeo Vasquez. She retired

from showbiz after appearing in movies produced by her mom’s company and focused as being the wife to Albert and mom to their children. She joined the MTRCB during the term of Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares as the agency’s chairperson.

Liezl battled breast cancer for years and the cancer cells had spread to her lungs before she passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 14 at 6:15 a.m. in Medical City, Pasig.

Aida Champagne becomes the official Liberal MLA candidate for Tyndall Park Riding

A festive mood and an air of enthusiasm lingered at the hall of the Tyndall

Park Community Centre as Aida Champagne, a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal and one of the most active community leaders in the Filipino community, was acclaimed as the official Liberal MLA candidate for Tyndall Park Riding in the April 2016 provincial election.

“By listening and learning, I want to become the voice for Tyndall Park in the Manitoba Legislature. But make no mistake, although this seat represents only one vote, together we are more than just one vote. We are a dream with no limits, a people with no fear. I am more optimistic than ever about what we can achieve together - a strong economy supported by a good and hardworking society where progressive values blossom into practical solutions, not political rhetoric,” Champagne said when she accepted the acclaimed nomination in front of some official Liberal candidates from the various political ridings, and the more than one hundred supporters.Roldan Sevillano nominated Aida Champagne while Rowena Oquendo seconded the motion. Sam Dixon opened the nomination program.

And to Rana Bokhari, the leader of the Liberal Party of Manitoba, Champagne said:"Your dedication to a liberal vision for this great province contributes to what has inspired me to run for public office."

Aida Champagne is the current chairman of the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival; president of the Filipino Senior Group of Winnipeg; and one of the coordinators of the fund raising for the typhoon victims in the Philippines, and as a volunteer in the various charitable and non-governmental agencies like Siloam Mission. And one

time, she was the reigning Miss Philippines in the Foklorama annual festival of nations.

Obama Doctrine: Legacy or fallacy? In his speech accepting the

Nobel Peace Prize awarded to him in December 2009,

President Barack Obama said: “I receive this honor with deep gratitude and great humility. It is an award that speaks to our highest aspirations -- that for all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter, and can bend history in the direction of justice.

“And yet I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the considerable controversy that your generous decision has generated. (Laughter.) In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labors on the world stage.

“But perhaps the most profound issue surrounding my receipt of this prize is the fact that I am the Commander-in-Chief of the military of a nation in the midst of two wars. One of these wars is winding down. The other is a conflict that America did not seek.

“Still, we are at war, and I'm responsible for the deployment of thousands of young Americans to battle in a distant land. Some will kill, and some will be killed. And so I come here with an acute sense of the costs of armed conflict -- filled with difficult questions about the relationship between war and peace, and our effort to replace one with the other.”Miscalculation

Reading between the lines, Obama seemed to be uncomfortable – and hesitant – of his new role as the Commander-in-Chief of the most powerful country in the history of mankind. As one who manifested a “peacenik” orientation during his college days at Columbia University in the early 1980s, he found his new role as the leader of the free world to be totally in conflict with what he was perceived to believe in: pacifism.

It did not then come as surprise when Obama decided to withdraw all American forces including “boots on the ground,” from Iraq at the end of 2011. And his only reason why he did so was because he made a promise during the 2008 presidential campaign that he would withdraw American troops from Iraq.

Obama ordered the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq when the Iraqi military was hardly a fighting force. When the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) rebels crossed the border from Syria and attacked Mosul in 2014, the city fell in four days of fighting when Iraqi soldiers threw down their guns and stripped off their uniforms as the ISIS rebels entered the city. The same scenario was repeated through all the towns

and villages that ISIS attacked. After several months of

merciless assault by ISIS against the helpless Iraqis, Obama ordered air strikes against the rebels. However, he refused to send “boots on the ground” to help the Iraqis defend their territory. Many military experts opined that the war couldn’t be won without “boots on the ground.”

And this turned out to be another Obama miscalculation. There is a proverb that says: “If there is a gap, something will fill it.” And true enough; the vacuum that America left in Iraq was filled by Iranian troops fighting side by side with the Iraqis against ISIS. Now, does anybody expect the Iranians to leave Iraq when ISIS is driven out of Iraq? Let me guess. Hell, no!Putin and World War III

But what’s happening in Iraq is just a microcosm of what’s happening throughout the globe vis-à-vis America’s role as the only superpower that maintains order in the world after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989. It was the dawn of Pax Americana or American Peace.

But Pax Americana is being shattered by the civil war in Ukraine. Indeed, what’s going on in Ukraine could be a precursor to World War III. Right now, Russian President Vladimir Putin is making a lot of noise, threatening to use nuclear missiles against members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) if they interfered with the unrest in Ukraine.

The question is: Is Putin going to use nuclear weapons if World War III erupted? While it might seem that there is some sanity to Putin’s mental state, he might start World War III with conventional weapons. However, should NATO or the United States win a conventional war with Russia, Putin is expected to resort to a “First-Strike” nuclear attack on the U.S. But in today’s nuclear technology, neither America or Russia could succeed in a “First-Strike” attack against each other because it would be almost impossible to seek and destroy the ballistic missile nuclear submarines that are moving stealthily in the high seas, ready to launch their missiles against pre-determined targets. It’s interesting to note that more than half of the U.S.’s nuclear ballistic missiles are launched from “boomers” as the nuclear submarines are called. Although Russia has a lot fewer “boomers” than the U.S., she has enough to cause enumerable nuclear damage to America. In other words, World War III could lead to MAD; that is, Mutually Assured Destruction.

Vision of peaceAnd it is because of this that

Obama is known to be a strong supporter of nuclear disarmament. While at Columbia University, which was the breeding ground for the anti-war movement, Obama wrote an op-ed, “Breaking the War Mentality,” in a campus newsmagazine, Sundial, about his vision of a “nuclear free world.”

It was this “vision” that had provided a backdrop for Obama’s foreign policy upon his election in 2008. It was no wonder then that his foreign policy, known as “Obama Doctrine” is guided by the use of diplomacy to accomplish peaceful resolutions to world problems. He believes that there are no military solutions to every problem in the 21st century. But then, as former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright had asked Gen. Colin Powell during the Clinton years, “What’s the point of having this superb military that you're always talking about if we can't use it?” Touché.

It did not then come as a surprise that Obama has consistently refused to send lethal and defensive weapons to Ukraine. He believes that arming Ukraine would infuriate Putin who had threatened to send arms and Russian troops to Ukraine. But Putin is already doing that; there are Russian troops and heavy weaponry in Ukraine right now. Yet, Obama has turned a blind eye to the Russian “invasion.” Arms race

And while Obama is trying to decrease U.S. troop strength and military assets, Russia and China have been increasing their military budgets to overcome America’s military superiority. Indeed, Russia now has more nuclear warheads than the U.S. while China’s growing naval power in the South China Sea is pushing America’s naval presence outside the First Island Chain, which runs from Japan through Taiwan, the Philippines, Borneo, Malaysia, and Vietnam. In addition, China is building at least five artificial islands in the Spratly archipelago, which is also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. Once these artificial islands are completed and used for naval and air force bases, China would have -- for the first time -- military bases outside Chinese territory. Yes, it won’t be long before the South China Sea becomes China’s Lake Beijing.

While America’s military brass is aware of what’s happening in Iraq, Ukraine, and the South China Sea, there is not much they can do to convince Obama to use a different tact in dealing with foreign policy and geopolitical matters. Simply put, accommodating – and appeasing – Russia, China, and Iran would only diminish America’s international image and military primacy. It would be the end of the unipolar world of Pax Americana and the advent of a multipolar world order that would divide the world into spheres of influence among the U.S., Russia, China, and Iran.

Surmise it to say, the Obama Doctrine may have contributed to the creation of this multipolar world order, which begs the question: Is Obama Doctrine a legacy or a fallacy?

Straight Right Report: Pacquiao dealing with leg crampsby Derick Ramos

On May 2nd, Manny Pacquiao will be fighting the biggest fight of his life

against unbeaten American, Floyd Mayweather. As each day passes, each punch and each hit Pacquiao dishes out in his training camp is put under the microscope. While his trainer Freddie Roach tries to solve the Mayweather puzzle, Pacquiao will need to solve a lingering issue in his career of cramping in his calves.

Pacquiao's calves are a major source of his punching power and he will need every advantage he can get when he takes on Mayweather. Roach has been working with Pacquiao's strength and conditioning coach, Justin Fortune, to solve the issue but know there's no easy fix.

"There's no magic cure for it," Roach told Yahoo Sports. "We're doing what we can do. I've got the doctors working on it."

In an effort to reduce leg issues including shin splints, Fortune has reduced uphill running and has had Pacquiao run on a rubberized track at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Despite the cramping, Pacquiao continued his sparring with fighters that were hired to mimic Floyd Mayweather's style of fighting. Welterweight prospect and 8-time U.S. National Champion Kenneth SIms, Jr

found out that Pacquiao still has a lot of speed and punching power suffering a bleeding nose from a straight left. Fortune wanted to send the message to Mayweather to let him know that Pacquiao will be good to go once the opening bell rings.

"You see how strong especially his legs are?" Fortune told a reporter. "I want you to report on this so Floyd Mayweather, Jr will know how fast and strong our fighter is."

With all the sparring partners Pacquiao will be using, Roach says he has a secret sparring partner he is saving for the end of training camp dubbing it as his secret weapon.

"I've got one that I'm going to use in the last two weeks and is one that used to work at Mayweather's gym and was part of Mayweather's camp," Roach said. "He said that Mayweather had disrespected him and they kind of just threw him aside, so I took him on".

Roach intends to keep the identity of the sparring partner a secret.

Quick Hits: Manny Pacquiao isn't the only Filipino fighter in the spotlight. Lineal world light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes defeated Mexican Gilberto Parra of Mexico at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. On the same card, The

Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire made another step towards his comeback beating Brazilian William Prado via TKO in the second round to claim the NABF

super bantamweight title... Undefeated British fighter Kell Brook took only four rounds to defeat Jo Jo Dan to defend his IBF welterweight title successfully...

Gary Russell, Jr scored four knockdowns and stopped Jhonny Gonzalez in four rounds to improve to 26-1 to claim the WBC featherweight title.

Sudoku Puzzles are games of patience, numbers and genius! The satisfaction of solving a challenging Sudoku Puzzle is one of the greatest accomplishments any sudoku game player can experience. Here is the puzzle. Good luck!

Solutions for Palaisipan & Sudoku will be posted online www.FilipinoJournal.com

New projects and ideas have been gaining strength, so this might be a good time to test the waters and see if it feels right to go ahead. You could just as easily close a profitable deal if you put your mind to it. Balance excitement with a realistic appraisal of the facts for best results.

A conversation may set you thinking about the potential for romance with someone. Try to avoid obsessive thinking, as it won’t be helpful. Even so, it pays to listen to your instinct over the days ahead. It could give you valuable guidance on financial and family matters.

You know what you want and people admire you for taking decisive action. Go about your business quietly and do the best in plotting your next move carefully. When it comes to socializing, you’ll be very much upfront and eager to enjoy yourself wherever possible. You may be motivated to pay attention to your instinct as it could provide accurate information on a number of key issues. Later, take a friend’s words with a grain of salt.

One person may attract you with an offer you can’t refuse. Moderation should be your mantra. Have fun, but use your common sense, too. This is a grand opportunity to expand your network of friends and have more fun. If you’ve been busy, this is your chance to kick back and relax. But if a profitable opportunity shows up, grab it.

You may be very confident that you can carry off your latest idea or project. This is a good time to get the advice of others, especially if they’ve succeeded with similar plans. Where career matters are concerned, the presence gives you staying power, meaning that you’ll be happy to work hard now if you can enjoy positive results later.

The focus zeroes in on matters associated with finances and shared resources. Perhaps it’s time to discuss important issues with your bank or financial adviser, especially if your cash situation has been edgy lately. If you’ve been hard at work, you may be inspired to make travel plans this week - finally. Thoughts of a well-deserved vacation may motivate you.

An item you wanted for some time could be calling out to you. Perhaps it’s time to make that special purchase! Your love life and social life seem very positive. You may get an invitation to go on a date or to a delightful get-together. If someone comes to you with a plan or idea, check the facts before you commit. It helps to compromise and cooperate, especially regarding a home or family issue. Don’t rock the boat!

If someone has a proposition for you, give it careful consideration. It may be a worthwhile option. You’ll likely be in a fiery mood and determined to beat off the competition. This could stand you in good stead if you don’t overdo it.

You’ll feel more like your usual self, ready to take charge and blaze on a new trail. Creative activities and pleasure options call out to you, too, so dive in and have fun in whatever way suits you best. If you’ve been thinking about traveling, perhaps you should firm up plans.

A dating opportunity sizzles, but you’ll need to be quick to take advantage of it. You can make a lasting impression if you spread on the charm thick enough. Life at home seems rather hectic, and could involve plans for remodeling. Don’t jump into action without planning ahead first. Leisure and pleasure options show up, too, encouraging you to put down the tools and take a spa day or get a massage.

Home-based activities may appeal for the chance they afford to unwind and let go. If issues have bugged you and left you feeling tired, then a retreat might do you a world of good. You’ll need the peace and quiet because you’ll be busy planning, discussing key issues, and negotiating terms for much of the week. The more rested you are, the more successful you can be. Think carefully about volunteering your time. It might be more trouble than it’s worth.

You might have mixed feelings if you’re meeting with an old pal or ex. If you’re willing to chat, you could be pleasingly surprised at how much he or she has changed. Regarding goals and ambitions, it might be a good idea to proceed with caution until you’re certain you want to continue. A review of your priorities can help you out here.

Matagumpay na Pagbabalik ng Parokya ni Edgarby aLfie vera mella

The recent concert of Parokya ni Edgar in Winnipeg was fairly successful. Despite the

fact that it was already the fourth visit to our city of the Philippine Alternative Rock band in the last several years, the attendance was still impressive. This may be attributed not only to the enduring popularity of the band and its mass-friendly music but also to the fact that the young members of the Filipino community are obviously craving for Filipino band music. Yes, we may estimate that Winnipeg has not even one big Rock concert like that in a year. And concerning our local band music scene, our local producers are yet to put their faith and investment on our fledgling Filipino-Canadian bands, many of which have long started to write and record original compositions. It’s just a matter of time when the best, unique, and hardworking of these lot get noticed.

The vocalist of the now-defunct Philippine Alternative Rock band Afterimage, Wency Cornejo was slated to perform also at the said concert; however, Cornejo failed to arrive because of an apparent problem with his travel documents. In lieu of his absence, a local band named Synergy opened the show with a number of Afterimage songs

that included “Bai (Sa Langit ang Ating Tagpuan)” and the piano-led ballad “Next in Line.” But before the opening band, an onstage parade of female models sponsored by the women’s clothing store DKF Fashion (located at Portage Place Shopping Centre) wowed the crowd. The other local band that graced the show, Lycosa presented a tight and solid set comprised by two originals and a cover of Sugarfree’s “Mariposa” (which was timely because one of the crew members of Parokya ni Edgar used to be a guitar player of the Philippine Alternative Rock band Sugarfree). According to Lycosa’s vocalist, they would soon be releasing their debut album. We better watch out for that. The best way to support artists is to buy their music. Before the main act, another opener gave the crowd a different flavor of music. The now-Winnipeg-based member of the ’90s-originating Philippine Hip-hop group Death Threat dished out a couple of his rap ditties.

Finally, the crowd went ecstatic when the main act entered the stage. Parokya ni Edgar, as always, delivered a fun-filled rocking set of engaging songs peppered with vocalist Chito Miranda’s comedic spiels that clicked with the audience. Even his bandmates were

pitching in on the stage antics. The only drawback of the gig, aside from Cornejo’s absence, was Miranda’s being sick (perhaps because of the weather changes; imagine they were travelling from one time zone to another each of which has a different weather). Because of this, Miranda and the rest of the group performed a short set—obviously to ensure that Miranda didn’t strain his voice too much. They still had a few more shows to play in the U.S. Regardless, the a good percentage of the crowd sang along with most of the songs that Parokya ni Edgar played, which included “Buloy,” “This Guy’s in Love with You, Pare,” “Mr. Suave,” and the machinegun-rap-flavored “Bagsakan,” which Miranda was able to pull off despite his condition.

Overall, the whole event was worth raving about. It was actually the third time that a show that featured Filipino performers was held at the newly renovated event center of Club Regent—March 14’s OPM Legends (Rico J.Puno, Marco Sison, Hajji Alejandro, and Eva Eugenio with locals Levy Abad, haLf man haLf eLf, and Traffikk Jamm), March 21’s Lea Salonga, and this.

I’ve heard from the grapevine that Eraserheads, or at the least the

solo band of the frontman of this epic Philippine group, might be coming to Winnipeg this year. Let’s all hope that this materializes. It’s about time that fans of Filipino Alternative Rock music in Winnipeg experience an authentic live rendition of the likes of “Toyang,” “Pare Ko,” and “Ang Huling El Bimbo” from Ely Buendia himself.

Fil-Cans excited for Jollibee opening in Canada!Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) is eyeing its first branch in Canada as part of its goal to put up 220 in the Philippines and 110 abroad, or a total of 330 new branches this year.

According to Jollibee chief finance officer Ysmael Baysa at the sidelines of Euromoney Investment Forum on Tuesday, March 24, the company is looking at Toronto as the site for its first store in Ontario, Canada.

Jose Minana, group president for Jollibee Foods Corporation, also said its Toronto debut is long

overdue adding that the company should have entered Canada way before.

Canada counts a large Filipino community according to the 2011 National Household Survey. There are more than 660,000 Filipinos in the country, with almost 250,000 located in the GTA, making Toronto home to the country’s largest Filipino population, followed by Vancouver and Winnipeg.

Food experts also welcome the entry of Jollibee in Canada. Garth Whyte, president of

the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association, says Filipino food is one of the up-and-coming cuisines in Canada. Kelly Weikel, a food-trend expert for Chicago consulting firm Technomic, Inc., agrees now is the right time for Jollibee to come to Canada.

The Filipino fast-food giant operates the largest food network in the Philippines, with 2,301 stores as of end-2014. The company also owns Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Mang Inasal, and Burger King.

Canada to lead Philippines trade mission

Minister of International Trade Ed Fast met with his counterpart in the Philippines, Gregory L. Domingo, Secretary of Trade and Industry met to discuss the potential for enhanced bilateral trade and investment relations, and ways to build on our current commercial relationship, which is already supported by existing agreements, such as a double taxation agreement, an investment promotion and protection agreement, and a recently expanded air transportation agreement.

“It is important to identify and foster growth in areas of common interest, such as agri-food, transport, energy, infrastructure, education, defence and security, and for the two governments to make commitments to resolve a

number of market access issues in a timely fashion, “ said Senator Enverga in a statement.

Minister Fast will lead a trade mission to the Philippines in May with a Canadian business delegation and Secretary Domingo, accompanied by a number of Philippine company representatives, may visit Canada at a later stage this year.

The Philippines holds the Chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) for 2015 and shares Canada’s commitment to fostering the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the global economy. Also, the Philippines is designated as a priority emerging market under the Global Markets Action Plan (GMAP) of Canada, which is a positive step towards a progressive bilateral relationship.
