Filippo was one of the most famous architects and engineers in the Italian Renaissance. His first architectural commission was a foundling hospital called “Ospedale degli Innocenti” it is a hospital of the Innocents. This was in 1419- 1445. The arches were about 8m high! This building unfortunately did not have any displays of fine marble and decorative inlays; it was the first building in Florence, Italy that had its columns and capitals. The dome was built in 1446 occupied most of Brunelleschi’s life. Filippo invented a new hoisting machine for raising the masonry that was needed for the dome. He actually designed two churches: Basilica Of San Lorenzo – 1419- 1480’s Santo Spirito- 1441- 2481 They are both considered in Renaissance architecture.

Filippo Brunelleschi

Filippo Brunelleschi was born in Florence, Italy in 1377 and died April 15th 1446 at the age of around 68-69. Filippo was one of the most famous architects and engineers in the Italian Renaissance.

His first architectural commission was a foundling hospital called “Ospedale degli Innocenti” it is a hospital of the Innocents. This was in 1419- 1445. The arches were about 8m high!
