Importance in Renaissance• Filippo Brunelleschi was one of the foremost architects and
engineers of the Italian renaissance.
• He was the first modern engineer and innovative problem solver.
• He built the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.
Background• Second of 3 sons and his father was a distinguished notary in
Florence.
• Initially trained as a gold smith and sculptor.
• Enrolled in the Arte Della Seta, the silk merchant guide.
History
• In 1401 Brunelleschi competed against Lorenzo Ghiberti and 5 other sculptors for the commission to make the bronze reliefs for the door of the Florence baptistery.
• Brunelleschi’s entry “The Sacrifice of Isaac,” was the high point of his career.
Miscellaneous • Early in his architectural career, Brunelleschi rediscovered the
principles of linear perspective, with these principles, one can draw a single vanishing point.
• Michalangelo was inspired by him.
• Donatello worked with Brunelleschi.
