Enthaar (Written Tycoon) will be
given her chance to provide Emirates
Park with its third Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) win after the
homebred filly set the benchmark at the official
Sydney two-year-old barrier trials yesterday,
running the fastest time of the session and also
becoming the probable favourite for the state’s
opening juvenile race of the season, the ATC
Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m).
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-
trained Enthaar was arguably the most
impressive two-year-old to trial on the
Kensington track in which she won heat five by
four and three-quarter lengths.
Enthaar ran an even 50 seconds for the
850-metre barrier trial and her last 600 metres
in 33.74 seconds, the quickest of the ten heats
run, which included an open event won by
Libertini (I Am Invincible) who stopped the
clock at 50.13 seconds.

of the Written Tycoon (Iglesia) filly did not
come as a surprise to Emirates Park general manager Bryan Carlson.
“She’s a lovely type and Ciaron and David have quietly liked her for a
while, so it is good to get her to the trials and show it and for a homebred
too, that’s the main thing,” Carlson told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“(Emirates Park) always keeps a few fillies every year on pedigree and
type, so she’s one we decided to keep last year. I don’t think she was even
entered for a sale.”
Broken in at Muskoka Farm, Enthaar was identified as a filly who would
be suited by the set-up and training style undertaken by Maher and Eustace.
“This is her third time
back to Sydney, so she’s well
travelled, and very mature
and looks to be switched on,”
Carlson continued.
“When you’re taking on
horses outside the stable, it’s the
next step up, really, and today
there were a lot of (talented)
horses around. It’s nice for her
to be out at this time of the year
and she seems to have coped
with it.
“To have that mentality, you can’t ask for more than that, so it’s
exciting.”
The ATC Gimcrack Stakes for two-year-old fillies at Randwick on
October 3 appears the logical starting point for Enthaar and from there
Carlson hopes a plan can be mapped out for her to target the Slipper.
“We will take her run by run and the aim will be to try and get enough prize-
money early, so we don’t have to put pressure on her in January or February (to be
high enough up the ballot order),” he said.

“She’s the standout so far (of Emirates
Park’s two-year-olds) but the others haven’t really been pushed at this
stage and we’ve only got a very small two-year-old crop.”
Emirates Park won the 2014 Slipper with Mossfun (Mossman)
and the 2018 edition with $1.7 million Inglis Easter yearling Estijaab
(Snitzel).
Enthaar is a daughter of the winning mare Final Agreement (Not A
Single Doubt) who is a sister to Group 1 winner Secret Agenda and the
Peter and Paul Snowden-trained stakes-placed Stellar Pauline as well as
a sibling to the stakes-placed Donandkim (Smart Missile) and Sweetener
(Snitzel). Final Agreement was purchased by Emirates Park for $400,000
from the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale. Final
Agreement has a yearling colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and
has been covered by Newgate Farm first season sire Tassort (Brazen Beau)
this season.
“We loved the mare as a yearling, which is why we went back and
bought her when she went through the sales as a broodmare prospect,”
Carlson said.
“We sent her down to Written Tycoon a few years ago and Enthaar is
the result. As much as we like buying a good one, we also want to breed
one.
“Final Agreement has got a colt yearling who will most likely go to Easter
and she missed last year, but she’s been covered by Tassort.”
Three first season sires on the board
Earlier, it was Golden Slipper winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon)
who made an immediate statement in the first juvenile heat when his son
Kalashnikov put a margin on his rivals in heat two, scoring by five lengths
in a time of 50.53 seconds.
Fellow first season stallions, Vinery Stud’s Star Turn (Star Witness)
and Arrowfield Stud shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero), also sired winners at
the Kensington session.
Kalashnikov, one of three colts owned by James Harron Bloodstock to
trial yesterday, ran 33.92 seconds for the last 600 metres in the 850-metre
barrier trial to set himself up for a tilt at the ATC

Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), the colts
and geldings race, at Randwick on October 3.
“It was a really good morning and I was delighted to obviously kick
things off with a Capitalist and we’re quite excited about that horse. He
has been showing Peter and Paul a lot at home, so it was great to see him
go there and do so well,” Harron told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“On first glance, he seems to have come through it really well. He took
it all in his stride. He handled the day brilliantly well and we will know a
lot more in the morning when he is checked over, but so far, so good, and
hopefully press on to the Breeders’ Plate.
“He was a wee bit new to it and Hugh (Bowman, jockey) gave him a
little reminder to pick up and change gear and I was really pleased to see
that last 600 metres.
“He was really good and kept building and was strong through the line.”
Sold by Segenhoe Stud at the Magic Millions in January for $600,000,
the colt was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock on behalf of a colts
syndicate. He is the second foal out of the winning mare Rough Ride
(Flying Spur), herself a half-sister to Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)
winner Eagle Way (More Than Ready) and stakes winners Assertive Eagle
(Danewin), Impressive Eagle (Rubiton) and Soaressa (Twining). Rough
Ride has a yearling filly by Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) and is due to foal to
Hellbent (I Am Invincible) next month.
Harron said: “There’s obviously a huge connection there, having
purchased him, but we bought this horse on his merits. He is an
outstanding physical, a real early looking type with a nice pedigree behind
him, so it was a real bonus that he was by Capitalist.”
Another Harron-selected colt by a first season sire, Star Turn’s
Astrologer, also took out heat ten after a slow get away, an effort that
pleased the agent given the colt’s recent development.
After being slowly away, Astrologer picked up ground under Kerrin McEvoy
before going on to score by a length and a quarter over Almahero (Al Maher) in
51.2 seconds and his last 700 metres in 35.65 seconds over 845 metres.
“I was really pleased with him. He’s done quite a bit of growing and
he’s got a nice length and scope about him,” Harron said.
“I think he’s an improving type of horse. I was pleased to see, even
though he was a little slow away, that he showed good racing racing
manners to be able to come through the pack and score late. The time
wasn’t that fast but he did it with his ears pricked.”
A $300,000 purchase. Astrologer is out of the unraced Fast ‘N’ Witty
(Fastnet Rock) who is a sister to the stakes-placed Fast Talker, herself the
dam of Listed winer Persuader (Zoustar) and the Tony Gollan-trained The
Actuary (Sebring) who won The Phoenix (Listed, 1615m) as a two-year-
old last season. Fast ‘N’ Witty has a yearling filly by Hellbent but did not
get in foal last year.
“We very much picked these horses out on physical type and ended
up with one Star Turn which I really like and it was nice to see him deliver
today,” he said.
“We’ve got a few by first season sires this year. They’ve been holding
their own in the past couple of years and I think there’s a great selection of
young stallions, so we’ve picked the eyes out of them and we’re very happy
to pick one up (by Star Turn).”
Maurice’s Medad (Maurice), who was having his second trial, won
heat six.
Harron also had the Snowden-trained Oblique (I Am Invincible), a
$260,000 yearling from the Gold Coast, finish one and a half lengths from
the winner Retrieval (Medaglia d’Oro) in heat eight when fifth.
“The penny probably hasn’t quite dropped with him yet. He’s been
a bit slow out in his jump-outs at home and he was just a bit slow again
today,” he revealed.
“We will just see how he comes through it. If he was going to go to the
races, he’d probably need to have another trial.
“He is still carrying a little bit of excess and he’s quite a good-doing
colt, so we’ll work out a plan with him.”
Winning trials at the first official Sydney session is not the be-all and
end-all, with Harron’s King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice), a dual Group 1
winner, running fourth of five in his first hit-out last year.
“I think it’s a great sign that horses are generally showing ability
to get to those trials and we see them come out at different stages and
people learn a bit more about what they’re capabilities are going to be.
“Of course, King’s Legacy was showing huge ability at home and he
got out over a bit further. It tends to throw up a lot of good horses.”
Shalaa colt Shaquero shines on the Gold CoastOn the Gold Coast yesterday, two two-year-old barrier trials were
conducted with the Chris Waller-trained Shaquero, a son of Arrowfield’s
Shalaa (Invincible Spirit), taking out heat one over 900 metres in a time of
54.08 seconds.
A $160,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by
agent Guy Mulcaster from the Fernrigg Farm draft, the Bob Hannon-
bred Shaquero defeated Prime Asset (Star Witness) by a length, while
Golden Eighty (No Nay Never) was another three quarters of a length
away in third. He is out of the winning mare Fimatino (Not A Single
Doubt) who is a half-sister to Sunset Express (Success Express), the
dam of Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner and Rosemont Stud sire Shamus
Award (Snitzel).
Heat two was won by Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) filly True
Moonlight, a Heinrich Bloodstock-bred, raced and trained two-year-old
daughter of Moonlight Hussey (Hussonet).

Heat 2 - colts - 850 metres Time: 50.13 seconds (33.29 last 600m)Kalashnikov (2 c Capitalist - Rough Ride
by Flying Spur)
“He’s always been like that, right from day one, especially being by
Capitalist, we were keen to see how their attitudes were and they’ve been
just like him, so I am really pleased for the horse and the stallion to get his
first one out on the track to be a winner,” co-trainer Peter Snowden said.
“We know the horse pretty well and he’s just franked what we’ve seen from
him every morning. He’s got good ability and a great demeanour and that
will take him a long way. Once he’s pulled up sound, there’s still a bit of
a belly on him, so he should tighten up a bit from today, so he should be
spot on for Saturday week.”
Heat 3 - fillies - 850 metres Time: 50.52 seconds (34.17 secs last 600m)Vaccine (2 f Not A Single Doubt - A Brilliant Idea by Afleet Alex)
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained the quinella of heat three, with
Vaccine defeating Miss Hoff (Flying Artie). “I think both fillies’ best attribute
is that they’ve got a great mental aptitude towards their racing and they’re
very mature in that sense,” Bott said. “(Vaccine) was beaten for speed a
little bit early, so Tim (Clark, jockey) just let her find her feet. She had a nice
education in amongst the field and I guess the most pleasing aspect was that
she responded to pressure late and was able to take those tight gaps and
find the line well.” On runner-up Miss Hoff, Bott said: “She stuck on well
considering she was stuck three wide and sustained that pressure. She looked
to get a little bit lost late as she wandered a bit but when that other filly joined
her she responded again. They’re two fillies who should improve and they
were two nice trials for the Gimcrack.” Vaccine was a $220,000 purchase from
the Gold Coast by Waterhouse and Bott for Glenlogan Park from the draft
of Queensland breeder Ron Gilbert’s Highgrove Stud. She is a sister to the
promising Glenlogan Park Stud-owned, Rob Heathcote-trained Minjee, a
two-time winner last season at two.
Heat 4 - colts - 850 metres Time: 50.59 seconds (34.46 sec last 600m)River Snitty (2 c Snitzel - Savannah River by Encosta De Lago)
Chris Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth described River
Snitty’s performance as a “really pleasing trial”. “He did everything right, he
came in back behind them, got a lovely educational experience and when
he presented in the straight,” Duckworth said. “I know Hughie (Bowman,
jockey) gave him a couple of reminders in the straight but to be fair to him
he lengthened well. Hughie actually came and jumped him out at home
last Tuesday on the Polytrack.” River Snitty was a $350,000 Magic Millions
graduate purchased by Guy Mulcaster from Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud
draft. River Snitty’s dam Savannah River, a half-sister to Savabeel (Zabeel),
is the dam of four-time winner Maddi Rocks (Fastnet Rock).
Heat 5 - fillies - 850 metres Time: 50.00 seconds (33.74 sec last 600m) Enthaar (2 f Written Tycoon - Final Agreement by Not A Single Doubt)
Co-trainer Ciaron Maher said Enthaar had been “quite sharp and
quite natural”. “She came up from Melbourne the other day and just had a
little 600-metre jump-out and she was very natural there,” the dual-state
trainer said. “She’s gone on and we haven’t had to do much with her and
she looked good again (today). (James McDonald, jockey) gave her a good
rap. He said she’s a three-year-old, did everything right and gave him a
really nice feel. She’s got it all there quite early, so hopefully she pulls up
and hopefully we can go on (to the races).”

Heat 6 - colts - 845 metres - Time: 50.65 seconds (34.54 last 600m)Maurice’s Medad (2 c Maurice - Presslist by Librettist)
Bjorn Baker was full of praise for Maurice’s Medad’s sire Maurice
after the colt, who was runner-up in a 735-metre trial at Randwick on
September 8, overcame a wide run to win heat six. “I wish I had more
horses in the stable whose father was Maurice,” Baker said. “I’ve got this
bloke and a couple of fillies who probably need a little bit longer, but this
bloke, he’s still got to develop into his frame, but he’s showing too much
to put out. He’s got a great attitude and I thought it was a really good
effort today, as it’s a big help to have the rail with two-year-olds, so he
was really game and strong to the line.” Maurice’s Medad was a $250,000
purchase by Baker and agent James Clarke from the Vinery Stud draft from
this year’s Magic Millions January sale. Maurice’s Medad’s dam Presslist
is a half-sister to Vinery Stud’s Group 1-winning stallion Press Statement
(Hinchinbrook)
Heat 7 - fillies - 845 metres - Time: 50.11 seconds (33.89 last 600m)Total Babe (2 f I Am Invincible - In Style by Fast ‘N’ Famous)
The good day at the trials for the Waterhouse and Bott stable
continued in heat seven when Total Babe won her trial by a nose.
“Total Babe showed great tactical speed and, obviously, she looks very
professional,” Bott said. “She relaxed well in front for Tommy (Berry,
jockey) and when she needed to quicken there was an immediate
response, so I thought of all ours this morning, she was the most
immediate and showed the most natural speed.” Total Babe, who is out
of New Zealand Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner In Style, was sold
by Mill Park Stud for $300,000 to Waterhouse and Bott at the Magic
Millions sale earlier this year. In Style has a Sebring (More Than Ready)
yearling colt and is due to foal to Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) this
month.
Heat 8 - colts - 845 metresTime: 51.08 seconds (34.50 last 600m)Retrieval (2 c Medaglia d’Oro - Shelters by Lonhro)
Godolphin, as expected, made its presence felt at the official two-year-
old trials and it was well-bred Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) colt Retrieval
who impressed in winning heat eight. James Cummings’ offsider Darren
Beadman was on course to oversee Godolphin’s four runners. On Retrieval,
Beadman said: “He’s very much a push-button horse. He travelled nicely in
the trial, went between horses, and that was a very positive trial.” The heats
were run on a Soft 6 surface which Beadman said would help the two-year-
olds pull up well in the hope of contesting upcoming races. “It’s probably a
blessing that we had a little bit of rain last night as it’s just softened up the track
nicely,” he continued. “The right ones will put their hands up and I quite like
the colt. He’s quite mature and precocious, while the filly (Tinge) is a little bit
on the light side.” Retrieval, a homebred for Godolphin, is a brother to Group
3 winner Multaja and Listed winner Veranillo, while he is also from the same
family as Group 1 winner Benfica (Lonhro). Shelters has a yearling colt by
Astern (Medaglia d’Oro).

Heat 9 - fillies - 845 metres Time: 50.42 seconds (34.43 seconds)Excela Bella (2 f Exceed And Excel - Caraveli by Viscount)
“Excela Bella, I thought there was a lot to like about her. I think
she will physically take a lot more improvement out of the trials than
any of them today,” co-trainer Adrian Bott said. “I like the way, when
she was a little bit lost and floating around, she really rallied strongly.
She pinned the ears back and fought on, which are qualities you like
to see at this very early stage.” Excela Bay is owned by an all-female
syndicate, so Bott indicated the filly would be given her chance to
qualify for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m). Consigned
by Rosemont Stud at the Magic Millions, Excela Bella was a $250,000
purchase by her trainers and is out of the unraced mare Caraveli, who
is a half-sister to El Cambio (Commands), Complicate (Commands)
and Cataclysm (Marauding), the dam of Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) winner Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) and Listed winner
Palomares (Commands). Caraveli was sold for just $5,500 in April in
an Inglis Digital auction.
Heat 10 845 metres - colts Time: 51.20 (34.65 seconds)Astrologer (2 c Star Turn - Fast ‘N’ Witty by Fastnet Rock)
“Kerrin (McEvoy, jockey)
was very happy with him. He was
probably a touch slower than
the other trials this morning, but
he was slow away himself,” Peter
and Paul Snowden’s racing
manager Colum McCullagh
said. “He mustered pretty well
and it was nice to see him run
through the line. He had his ears
pricked and had a bit of a look around but there’s improvement in him.” -

Nature Strip ordered to retrial after mishap
The Everest (1200m) favourite Nature Strip
(Nicconi) has been ordered to take a barrier
trial before his next start after unshipping James
McDonald and galloping riderless in a dramatic
incident at Randwick yesterday. The four-
time Group 1 winner, who was due to line up
against Libertini (I Am Invincible), Wild Ruler
(Snitzel) and Mizzy (Zoustar) over 850 metres,
came through the drama unscathed. McDonald
also escaped injury and was able to ride in the
remaining two-year-old trials. The six-year-old
is scheduled to contest the Premiere Stakes
(Gr 2, 1200m) on October 3, but Racing NSW
stewards yesterday announced he must first
satisfy them following yesterday’s scare.
Connections unable to explain “freak accident”Chris Waller’s assistant Charlie Duckworth
was unable to explain the circumstances
surrounding Nature Strip’s antics at the
gates yesterday, labelling the incident “a
freak accident”. “He seems to have pulled
up absolutely fine,” Duckworth told Sky
Thoroughbred Central. “He’s had a lot of race
starts and public appearances and it’s not
something he’s done before - it was just a freak
accident. I had a good chat to James. There was
no reason for him to do it. He’s just jumped in
the air as they have opened. He gave James no
indication. He was lovely and relaxed before
the trial, so it’s a bit of a head scratcher but
they’re all individuals, these horses, and he’s
obviously one with a high profile so it makes
it all the more interesting and complex.
He’s in one piece and James in one piece, so
he’ll benefit from the gallop even if he was
riderless.”
Diamond Effort given Moir chanceClinton McDonald believes Diamond Effort
(Mossman) is up to the challenge of keeping
her undefeated record this year intact when
she takes her chance in Friday’s Moir Stakes
(Gr 1, 1000m). Diamond Effort will be up
against the likes of Fabergino (Maschino),
Away Game (Snitzel), Bella Vella (Commands)
and Hanseatic (Street Boss) at Moonee Valley
and her trainer is approaching the race with a
degree of confidence. "She's going great. She
gets her opportunity to step up in grade and
she deserves a crack at it," McDonald said. "Her
wins have all been great. Her last-start win at
Caulfield was against the pattern as she was
off the speed. She pinned her ears back and
got home. Also, it was a good track and she's
better suited on a wet track. She's improved
since her first-up win. She can handle pressure.
She's a big, strong mare. There's going to be
a lot in our favour." McDonald added that if
Diamond Effort ran well on Friday she would
have her next start in the Manikato Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m), also at Moonee Valley, a month later
on October 23.
Golden Rose or Guineas for Mo’ungaConnections will make the call today on which
route they will take with last Saturday’s Dulcify
Stakes (Listed, 1500m) winner Mo’unga
(Savabeel). The Chris Waller-trained colt
stepped up in grade to register a length and a
half win over Global Quest (More Than Ready)
at Rosehill last weekend, an effort which could
earn him a tilt at next month’s Caulfield Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m). “Mo’unga will either run in the
Golden Rose or Caulfield Guineas, a decision
will be made tomorrow about the Golden Rose,”
the champion trainer wrote on Twitter yesterday.
“We feel he is sharp enough to prove himself as a
sprinter-miler at this early stage.”
Mamaragan still Thompson’s Golden boyJohn Thompson is maintaining his faith in
Mamaragan (Wandjina), confident that the
dual Group 1 placegetter can rebound in the
$1 million Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).
The colt has been beaten in his two runs
this campaign, resuming with a distant third
behind Anders (Not A Single Doubt) in the San
Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) before following
that effort up with a sixth behind Rothfire
(Rothesay) in The Run To The Rose (Gr 2,
1200m). Both races contained runaway leaders
with Anders showing sustained speed to score,
while Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) went hard
and tired behind Rothfire. Thompson believes
Mamaragan's efforts have been better than they
appear and the three-year-old is looking for the
extra distance of Saturday's race at Rosehill. "The
colt, he's a good horse. He just needs a race run to
suit," Thompson said. "Both times this campaign
he has just been run off his legs. He is looking for
further and he will appreciate the 1400 metres."

King’s Legacy nommed for Guineas PreludeConnections of King’s Legacy (Redoute’s
Choice) are keeping their weekend options
open with the dual Group 1 placegetter
accepted for races in both Sydney and
Melbourne. The Golden Rose remains his
preferred target but the colt also has the option
of lining up in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude
(Gr 3, 1400m). “What if he draws barrier 18 in
the Golden Rose? It gives me the option,’’ co-
trainer Peter Snowden told Racing.com. “But
he’s most likely to stay here in Sydney, although
nothing is locked in yet. We’ll also see what the
weather does. He’ll run well this Saturday, but
it looks as though he’ll be better once he gets to
the 1600 metres. Then he’ll come into his own.
There was nothing wrong with his first-up run
and he’s going well, but you’d think the mile is
the trip that will be best for him.’’
Tyzone to stake Epsom claims at RosehillThe likelihood of Stradbroke Handicap (Gr
1, 1400m) winner Tyzone (Written Tycoon)
running in the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m)
will hinge on his second-up performance at
Rosehill on Saturday. Toby Edmonds will assess
how Tyzone copes with a step-up in trip in the
Shannon Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) before deciding
whether to take on the Epsom Handicap at
Randwick. "We're a bit unsure about a mile
with him," Edmonds, who trains in partnership
with his son Trent, said. "We’ll know more after
the Shannon. If he goes through the line we're
happy to go to the Epsom. If not, we would think
about the Yes Yes Yes which is a 1300 metre
weight-for-age race worth a million dollars a
few weeks after that." Tyzone opened his spring
carnival campaign with an eighth-placed finish
behind Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom) in the
Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill on
September 12.
Vanna Girl also on track for the EpsomToby Edmonds has locked in an Epsom
start for stablemate Vanna Girl (Husson)
after she finished ninth behind Dreamforce
(Fastnet Rock) in the Tramway Stakes (Gr 2,
1400m) at Randwick on September 5. "She
was looking for the mile first up the way she
raced," Edmonds said. “It wasn't really run
to suit and she was only warming up the last
100 metres. With a month between runs, a
nice tune-up trial in between, I don't think
going into the Epsom second up is going to
be a big issue. She's got good residual fitness
from last preparation and we thought if we
ran her again she'd be too dour for the mile."
Vanna Girl lined up at Randwick on the back
of an 84-day break, having won The Roses (Gr
2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm.
Knuckey flies in for Moir ridePerth-based Peter Knuckey is expecting to
be released from quarantine today ahead of
his ride on the Tiarnna Robertson-trained
Fabergino in the Moir Stakes. Fabergino won
the Northam Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) when last
seen in May and Knuckey is excited to get back
on board. “It looks a very good race as we knew
it would, but this is the race we’ve targeted and
we are going to see how good she is,” the jockey
told Racing.com. “I’m really looking forward
to it. I’ve just had to quarantine for a couple
of days since Friday and I’ve had a (Covid-19)
test this morning with the result coming back
this afternoon. Once that’s all clear then I
can go to where Tiarnna and the horse are at
Mornington and Tuesday morning start riding
a bit of trackwork. Fabergino’s been a bit of a
freak of nature. Her mum’s side breeding wise
is nothing too flash and she’s just one out of
the box. She’s ready to take on the big guns
here.”
Farnan suffering from low grade infectionFarnan (Not A Single Doubt) was yesterday
being treated with antibiotics after it was
revealed he was found to have filling in his off-
fore leg. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-
trained colt suffered a shock defeat on his return
to action when finishing only fifth in the Run
To The Rose and Bott reported to the stewards
he had been forced to miss work yesterday.
Confirming the news in a statement, Racing
NSW said: “(Farnan) was found this morning to
have filling to its off-fore leg above the fetlock
joint with associated low grade infection. The
colt is being treated with antibiotics. Mr Bott
has confirmed the colt has pulled up with
no adverse effects from the Run To The Rose
but had not worked this morning following
the identification of the filling in the off-fore,
which is presumed to have occurred in the
stable overnight. Mr Bott has been requested to
provide stewards with an update on the colt's
condition later this week.”
Toorak aim for Sircconi Sircconi (Nicconi) will be aimed at next
month’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m), with
Nick Ryan revealing the six-year-old will not
have another run before the Caulfield race.
Sircconi was last seen earlier this month
finishing a close-up fourth in the Feehan
Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). Meanwhile, Ryan will
take talented four-year-old Express Pass
(Wandjina) to Moonee Valley on Moir Stakes
night for his next run. The gelding jumped out
nicely last Tuesday, pleasing his trainer. “He
will head to Moonee Valley in a Benchmark
84, 1200-metre rating race Moir Stakes night.
It looks a nice, progressive Benchmark race for
him,” Ryan told Racing.com. “We are hoping
he can string another win together. We’ve
always had a big opinion of the horse. If he
can put his hand up and keep winning these
races then he will no doubt deserve his crack
at something better.”
Hey Doc works wellThree-time Group 1 winner Hey Doc (Duporth)
will kick-off his spring campaign in Friday’s
Moir Stakes after an eye-catching piece of work
at Moonee Valley yesterday. Connections were
delighted by the seven-year-old’s final hit-
out which saw him clock 23.59s, a quick last
400 metres relative to other horses. “He really
enjoyed his morning out there at The Valley, his
race record suggests he loves the track and we’ve
taken him there on a few different occasions for
gallops,” co-trainer Calvin McEvoy told Racing.
com. “I think this morning was probably the
sharpest he’s ever worked there and Luke
[Currie] was very pleased with him, as was I.
He’s been jumping out very well too, in one of
them a horse went with him, which they don’t
normally do, and that was Danny O’Brien’s
From Within, who won on Saturday.”

Catalyst to head back to NZCatalyst’s (Darci Brahma) spring campaign is
over, but Clayton Chipperfield was relieved
with yesterday’s veterinary inspection on his
stable star. Catalyst is booked to return to New
Zealand on Sunday for a three-month spell
after he finished last of 12 in the Shorts (Gr 2,
1100m) at Randwick on Saturday. He was eased
down by Glen Boss after suffering interference
and a post-race veterinary examination on
raceday revealed Catalyst to be lame in his off-
foreleg. “I was thinking he might need surgery
and that could open up a lot of other problems
and see him off the scene for a long time,” the
trainer said. “Fortunately he just needs a three-
month spell and the vet says he should be good
to go again. The x-ray showed there is a lot of
movement around his fetlocks. It’s a maturity
thing and he’s still growing. He will have three
months out at The Oaks Stud and all going
well he could be back racing in the mid to late
autumn.”
Con Te Partiro retiredDual Group 1 winner Con Te Partiro (Scat
Daddy) will head straight to the sales without
another run after it was announced the seven-
year-old had suffered an injury setback which
will rule her out of the Epsom Handicap.
Next month’s Randwick contest and a tilt at
the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 1m) had been
on the agenda for the mare, but she will now
head straight to Keeneland for the November
Breeding Stock Sale, where she will be offered
in Book 1 on November 9. Sold at the 2015
Keeneland September Yearling Sale as a half-
sister to stakes performer Donworth (Tiznow)
for $130,000 to Cromwell Bloodstock, Con Te
Partiro begen her career with Wesley Ward,
making a winning debut before taking out
the Bolton Landing Stakes (Listed, 5.5f) on
her third start. While she was a model of
consistency, she was an infrequent winner for
Ward, only adding one further victory in nine
starts after the Saratoga success. That win,
though, was one of her crowning achievements,
taking the Sandringham Handicap (Listed, 1m)
at Royal Ascot in 2017. After a lacklustre 2018,
she was sent through the Fasig Tipton Kentucky
November Mixed Sale, fetching $575,000 to
the bid of S F Bloodstock and Newgate Farm.
In what would prove a shrewd move, the
partnership decided to send her to Australia
to continue racing her, winning the Dark Jewel
Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) at Scone at her first
Australian outing. She mixed her form in her
first six months down under and was retired
in October, 2019, before a decision was made
to return her to the racetrack after she failed
to get into foal. That would prove a blessing in
disguise as she went on to take two of Australia’s
top mares races, the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1,
1500m) and the Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Gr 1,
1600m).
Kisukano spelledKisukano (Bel Esprit) will miss next month’s
Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick after
connections elected to instead spell her with
a summer campaign in mind. The Michael
Nolan-trained filly won four of her six starts as
a juvenile and added two further victories to
that tally at three before being beaten narrowly
when finishing runner-up in the Pink Ribbon
Cup (1300m) at the Gold Coast on her most
recent outing.
One kilogram penalty for OrderofthegarterOrderofthegarter (Galileo) has been penalised
one kilogram for the Melbourne Cup (Gr
1, 3200m) and Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)
following his win in the Naturalism Stakes (Gr
3, 2000m) on Saturday. The Danny O’Brien-
trained star is a leading fancy for the Caulfield
Cup, but will now carry 51 kilograms in both
races. The Naturalism Stakes is a ballot exempt
race for the Caulfield Cup and Orderofthegarter
joins Aktau (Teofilo) as horses guaranteed a
start in the race. He is yet to pass the ballot for
the Melbourne Cup but can do so by finishing
in the top eight of the Caulfield Cup. “It was
encouraging to see Orderofthegarter record
his third career win in the Naturalism Stakes
and his first since winning a Listed race for
three-year-olds in April 2017,” Racing Victoria
executive general manager, Greg Carpenter,
told Racing.com. “The merit of the victory on
Saturday warranted a one kilogram penalty
for both Cups as he seeks to emulate Jameka
who won the Caulfield Cup after winning the
Naturalism Stakes in 2016."
Vic jockeys suspendedA trio of jockeys have been handed suspensions
for weekend rides at Ballarat and Tatura. John
Robertson was given a 14-meeting ban for careless
riding on board Colville House (Ocean Park)
in race three at Tatura on Saturday. Roberston,
who pleaded guilty, started his suspension on
Saturday night with the ban set to expire at the
conclusion of the day meeting at Tatura on
October 2. Campbell Rawiller was suspended
for eight meetings for careless riding on board
Can Star (Starspangledbanner) in race nine on
the Tatura card. He pleaded guilty to the charge
and his ban starts at midnight tonight and expires
midnight, September 29. On Sunday, Jarrod Fry
received an eight-meeting ban for breaking the
whip rule on runner-up Barry The Baptist (Hard
Sun) in the Golden Nugget (1600m). Fry pleaded
guilty to using his whip five times more than
permitted prior to the 100 metres and was also
handed a $300 fine. His ban started at midnight
yesterday and expires midnight September 28.
Moss Trip in foal to Trapeze ArtistGroup 3 winner Moss Trip (Mossman) has
scanned in foal to Widden Stud resident and four-
time Group 1 winner Trapeze Artist (Snitzel).
The winner of over $500,000 in prize-money for
her owners Triple Crown Syndications, Moss
Trip, returned an early positive to her 14-day
post ovulation scan yesterday morning. Trapeze
Artist stands for a fee of $77,000 in 2020.
RV relaxes border Covid restrictionsTrainers and their staff operating on the state
border between Victoria and New South Wales
are set to benefit greatly from a change in
Covid-related protocols restricting movement.
Racing Victoria yesterday announced that
border residents who are licensed, registered
or employed within the state are now permitted
to attend a racecourse or licensed premises
without undertaking a 14-day period of
isolation. Racing NSW meanwhile, announced
an easing of its own restrictions which
prevented Victorain residents (in the border
areas) from attending tracks in the NSW border
region, and NSW residents from attending
licensed premises across the state.

Melody Belle to trial at RotoruaStar mare Melody Belle (Commands) will trial at
Rotorua today in a 1215-metre heat as she builds
towards a raceday return. The Jamie Richards-
trained ten-time Group 1 winner returned from
Sydney after finishing 11th in the Winx Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) and could be a late addition to the
Hawke’s Bay carnival, with the Windsor Park Plate
(Gr 1, 1600m) and Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m)
her potential options. “She has done everything
right and Jamie can’t fault her at this stage,” said
John Galvin, manager of owners Melody Belle
Fortuna Syndicate. “It has been step-by-step
and little boxes being ticked, but how she trials
tomorrow will have a say as to where we go. She
had her first full gallop on Saturday morning and
Jamie seemed content with that, but the trial
tomorrow will really tell us where she is at. She is
not nominated for the races at Hawke’s Bay but
there is a late nomination up until Tuesday week.”
Colgan keen for raceday returnVinnie Colgan is targeting a November return to
raceday competition after undergoing an operation
on a neck injury he suffered in a fall ten years ago.
Having struggled with pain for a prolonged period
of time, the 45-year-old is raring to return. “I had a
fall ten years ago and smashed four vertebras and
that’s where it’s all come from,” Colgan said. “The
pain got so bad I was thinking ‘I’m not going to
ride anymore’. For about 18 months I was living on
Panadol to keep going. I finally got the operation on
May 31 and that has been so successful. The level of
my pain has gone from ten to zero. Hopefully I’ll be
back riding by November.”
Short course option for MascarponeMascarpone (Shooting To Win) was back in
the winner’s circle at Hawke’s Bay on Saturday
when successful over 1200 metres and the four-
year-old is likely to remain at sprint distances
moving forward. “It was a terrific win and he will
go to an Open Handicap 1200-metre race on the
second day of the Hawke’s Bay Carnival,” said
Graeme Rogerson, who trains in partnership
with wife Debbie. “I think we will keep him
sprinting and he will go to Christchurch for
the Stewards.” Rogerson was also pleased with
Beauden’s (Bullbars) sixth-placed finish over
1600 metres on Saturday. “We are looking at
running him in the Livamol and I couldn’t be
happier with him. He has developed into a nice
horse and was a bit gross on Saturday.”

Japan: Babbitt takes St Lite KinenBabbitt (3 c Nakayama Festa - Art Ryoko by
Taiki Shuttle) earned a spot in the final leg of
the Japanese Triple Crown, the Kikuka Sho
(Gr 1, 3000m), with his victory in the Asahi
Hai St Lite Kinen (Gr 2, 2200m) at Nakayama
yesterday. The traditional St Leger lead-up, won
by Babbitt’s sire Nakayama Festa (Stay Gold)
in 2009 as well as horses like Isla Bonita (Fuji
Kiseki) and Kitasan Black (Black Tide) in recent
years, brought together a number of three-year-
olds seeking a ticket to take on Triple Crown
aspirant Contrail (Deep Impact) next month.
It was the Tamio Hamada-prepared Babbitt,
entering off three straight wins including the
Radio Nikkei Sho (Gr 3, 1800m) at Fukushima,
who led all the way to take the St Lite Kinen
under a well-judged Hiroyuki Uchida ride. He
defeated Satono Flag (Deep Impact) by a length
and a half, with a further half length back to
Galore Creek (Kinshasa No Kiseki) in third. The
Kikuka Sho is at Kyoto on October 25.
Hong Kong: Beauty Generation, Golden Sixty to clashTwo-time Hong Kong Horse of the Year Beauty
Generation (Road To Rock) is entered to have
his first start for David Hayes in Sunday’s
Celebration Cup (Gr 3, 1400m) at Sha Tin, a
race the eight-year-old has won three times
before. However, standing in his way is rising
star Golden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro), who
became just the second horse to sweep Hong
Kong’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series last season,
as well as Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) hero
Southern Legend (Not A Single Doubt). A total
of 11 entries have been received for the feature,
the first of Hong Kong’s stakes races for the
2020-21 season.

from his first crop on Sunday when Gretzky The
Great (2 c ex Pearl Turn by Bernardini) took out
the Summer Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Woodbine,
earning a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

Japanese sensation Kazushi Kimura, the Mark
Casse-trained Gretzky The Great prevailed
after a speed-stalking trip, scoring by three

recorded his first Grade 1 win in the Summer

If I want to do something, I can do anything.
When I came to the final turn then came

explosion. He sometimes was a little bit lugging

Darley’s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for $40,000
(approx. AUD$55,000).
19 for SpeightstownWinStar Farm’s Speightstown (Gone West)
recorded Grade 1 winner number 19 on
Sunday when Lady Speightspeare (2 f ex Lady
Shakespeare by Theatrical) - a half-sister to
Shakespear’sgalley (Galileo), who has his
first Australian trial at Warwick Farm this
morning - took out the Natalma Stakes (Gr 1,
8f) at Woodbine on Sunday. The Chuck Fipke
homebred, trained by Roger Attfield, remained
unbeaten from two starts, overcoming barrier
issues to score by three-quarters of a length over
Alda (Munnings), with a further two and three-
quarter lengths away to Seasons (Tapit) in third.
"That's always nice to see. When you break your
maiden and you're going into a race like this
off of going wire-to-wire, you really haven't
had any education or anything going into
something like this, so it was nice to see that for
sure,” Attfield said of the Emma-Jayne Wilson-
ridden Lady Speightspeare, indicating the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 1m) is
a likely target. Speightstown stands at WinStar
Farm for $70,000 (approx. AUD$96,400).

33 for Shanghai BobbyFormer Coolmore stallion Shanghai Bobby
(Harlan’s Holiday) brought up his 33rd stakes
winner on Sunday when Pirate’s Punch (4 c
ex Catch The Moon by Malibu Moon) took
out the Salvator Mile (Gr 3, 1m) at Monmouth
Park. Pirate’s Punch could be bound for the
Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Gr 1, 1m) after he
scored a belated first stakes win, having been
disqualified last month after finishing first
past the post in the Philip Iselin Stakes (Gr
3, 8.5f ). On Sunday, it was never in doubt,
scoring by two lengths over Top Line Growth
(Tapizar), with a head back to Bal Harbour
(First Samurai) in third. “The Breeders’ Cup
Dirt Mile is definitely our plan based on these
last two races,” his Kentucky-based trainer
Grant Forster said. “For us here in Kentucky,
it’s a home game this year. He does have one
race at Keeneland when he ran very well
as he was just starting to improve last fall. I
know the owners and I are on board. I guess
we have to put our money where our mouth
is and give a horse the chance to show what
he can do on the national stage.” Shanghai
Bobby, who stood five seasons at Coolmore’s
Ashford Stud, is now based at Arrow Stud in
Japan.

registered a 64th individual stakes winner
on Sunday when Hateya (5 m ex Selfsame by

(Listed, 1600m) at Bro Park in Sweden. The
well-travelled Hateya, who began her season
in Dubai and then has campaigned in the
UK over the summer, returned to Bro Park
for the Lanwades Stud Stakes for the third
time, having finished fifth in 2018 and third in
2019. Ridden by Pat Cosgrave, the Jim Boyle
trainee defeated Eesha My Flower (English

BY MEREDITH DAUGHERTY OF BLOODHORSE
Officials reported 237 horses sold for
$11,516,500
Sunday's session of the Keeneland
September Yearling Sale continued
to be heavily shopped by buyers
and experienced solid trade as the
auction prepared to enter its second week.
Book 4 got underway as a total of 237 horses
from 322 offered changed hands for $11,516,500
(approx AUD$15,855,250). Keeneland
reported an average price of $48,593 (approx
AUD$66,900) and a median of $40,000 (approx
AUD$55,000). The 85 horses that went unsold
represented an RNA rate of 26 per cent.
Through to Sunday, 1,351 horses have been
sold for gross receipts of $221,281,200 (approx
AUD$304,646,000).
Topping Sunday's session was a filly
by Adena Springs Kentucky's Ghostzapper
(Awesome Again) out of the stakes-winning
mare Saxet Heights (Outflanker). Purchased
for $210,000 (approx AUD$289,000) by C.J.
Thoroughbreds, the filly was bred in Kentucky
by SF Bloodstock and consigned by Woods
Edge Farm, agent.
The filly had been purchased as a weanling
during the Keeneland November Breeding
Stock Sale for $130,000 in the name of Rocco
Bloodstock. Connections buying with C.J.
Thoroughbreds said the filly had the right kind
of size and scope they had been looking for and
that while the price was slightly above what
they had been expecting to pay, it still fell well
within their range for purchase.
Three yearlings shared the day's
second-highest price of $190,000 (approx
AUD$261,500), beginning with a colt by Hill 'n'
Dale Farms stallion Maclean's Music (Distorted
Humor). Consigned by Summerfield, agent for
Stonestreet Bred & Raised, the bay yearling is
out of the mare Yes Liz (Yes It’s True), who ran
second in the Sorority Stakes (Listed, 6f).
"We're very pleased with what he brought,"
said Andrew Vanlangendonck of Summerfield.
"We had him pegged around that price range.
As you get down in the books, the prices go
down as well.
"We thought he was very well placed. He
was a very standout physical and by a sire that
is having a good turnaround. Hopefully, he'll
do well in the future. Once again, it's another
Stonestreet horse. It's incredible the programme
they have and what kind of horseflesh they're
able to push out to all the consignors that are
lucky enough to sell for them."
Acting as agent, trainer Kenny McPeek
signed for a colt by Lane's End sire Unified
(Candy Ride) out of the mare Song of Solomon
(Unbridled’s Song). Consigned by Legacy
Bloodstock, the colt was bred in Kentucky by
Two Hearts Farm II.
"He was just an awesome horse," said
Tommy Eastham of Legacy. "I have been
really lucky. I had an Into Mischief filly in
Book 3, and this horse that never cheated me.
Tony Braddock raises an incredible horse. He
produces good, well-mannered horses and has
a great crew.
"The horse himself, mentally, is one of those
that every time someone looked at him, they
said he looked better than the last time. Even
through the scoping and everything he had to
go through, he was a gentleman the whole time.
"One of the things I liked about him the
most is that he was always a horse that when
I evaluated him every month, he had a great
length of bone but he didn't have a lot of mass
until about August. August was when he really
came into himself, and I think there is a ton of
upside for him going to Kenny and his owners
because he's just now getting to be himself."
McPeek signed for three other yearlings
Sunday, bringing his total to 18 overall. Total
receipts for the horses come to $2,304,000
(approx AUD$3.12 million).
Rounding out the trio of $190,000 (approx
AUD$261,500) yearlings was another Unified
colt, consigned by Michael and Julia O'Quinn,
agent. Bred in Kentucky by Gatewood Bell, the
colt is out of stakes winner Promise Me a Cat
(D'wildcat) and was purchased by Redwings.
With prices experiencing a decline as the
latter half of the sale begins, consignors and
buyers alike said it was impossible to deny
the impact the Covid-19 crisis has had on the
market and would continue to have on the
market at every stage going forward.
"It's a different ballgame," Vanlangendonck
said. "I think a lot of us got comfortable in the

earlier books thinking it might not be the way
it's turning out to be, but I know that many
consignors may have had a different experience
today.
"It seems to be a lot more selective, and I
know the two-year-old pinhookers are a big
part of the middle market and they're coming
back from the year they had. They're making
more selective choices and they're looking for
as close to a sure thing as you can get."
"Like other consignors, I'm not batting
1.000," said Eastham.
"I think we've had to adjust a little bit,
and we're getting our information a little
differently. The videos Keeneland have done
have been great to get more participation, but
as consignors, we've had to really adapt and
learn more about technology since most of us
are farmers. Maybe it's a good thing in the long
run."
Bloodstock agent Davant Latham, who has
both bought and sold several horses during
the opening books, said that while the sale was
definitely a buyer's
market, it's important
to consider the long-
lasting effects the
industry will face in
the wake of a stunted
economy.
"We've been
fortunate to have a
very good sale, but
I think this is what
we expected would
happen," Latham
said. "But it's a very
tough time to be a
breeder. That's very
bad for our industry overall. We need breeders,
and we need them to make enough money
to not only survive, but to want to continue
breeding. We all depend on each other. I don't
care who you are, this impacts your game.
"I hope that the stallion farms are paying
attention to this market and that they will adjust
their fees accordingly, or at least throw some
kind of rescue net out to breeders, because
they're the ones that really take the risk. If
stallion farms don't respond, there won't be
breeders and they won't be able to sell seasons.
We all have to look at the big picture going
forward."

BY HARRY TROY | @RACINGMACAU
Trainer Nick Moore has mapped
out an ambitious program for his
exciting four year Sport Genius
(Ocean Park) who showed great
determination in scoring a last-stride win over
the hot favorite Diamond Moonlight (The Wow
Signal), in Saturday’s Class 3 over 1050 metres
on the all-weather surface.
With regular rider Luis Corrales in the
saddle, Sport Genius - after a tardy beginning
- soon mustered speed to sit at the girth of
Diamond Moonlight. It was obvious before
the turn that it was just a two-horse affair with
the pair singling out for a thrilling battle over
the final 200 metres. Sport Genius, the much
smaller of the two horses, dug deep to dive late
for a head victory on the line.
It was a much-relieved Nick Moore after the
race and the rookie trainer announced that he
will be aiming the son of the 2012 Cox Plate (Gr
1, 2040m) winner towards the Four-Year-Old
Classics, such as the Derby Trial (Listed, 1500m)
and the Macau Guineas (Listed, 1500m).
“He really got to the line well, it was a super
effort,” he said. “It was the first time with the
blinkers and he didn’t rev up, he was nice and
relaxed in the run and found plenty. If you look
at the race, watch how he picked up when he
switched to his left lead; that’s his weapon. He
really got into his work after that
“Before the race of course we knew the
favourite Diamond Moonlight was going to
be very hard to toss. He bolted in on the rain-
affected sand last start and his times for the
distance were far superior to my horse. But my
little man is a real tough little fighter and he is
looking to go further.”
Whilst it might seem a little ambitious at the
present, Moore is optimistic that Sport Genius is
the type of horse that could give him his second
Macau Guineas: “It’s a good way off yet but I do
think he has all the qualities it takes for a race
like the Guineas. He is not a great beginner but
he has good speed to put himself into the race
and he knows where the post is.”
With a team of 13 horses in his yard at
present Moore is anxiously awaiting for the
Covid-19 travel restrictions to be eased.
“I’ve got 13 at the moment and have two in
Australia waiting to come and one in the UK,
but of course we just have to be patient,” he
said. “Hopefully I can get the team up to 20 by
the end of the season, which would be good in
these difficult times we are going through.”
Moore achieved the rare feat of winning
a Group 1 race in his debut season as trainer
with Hostwin Saturn (Stratum) taking out the
Macau Guineas back in June. With his small
team, Moore only had a total of 68 runners for
the whole of last season for 13 winners and 18
placings. His win strike rate of 19 per cent and
place percentage of 46 per cent was the best
strike rate of any trainer; Sport Genius was his
only runner on Saturday.
Former dual Group winner Kelowna Star
(Sufficient) bounced back to his best with a
brilliant win in Saturday’s Class 1 & 2 over 1510
metres under Frenchman J B Hamel, to open
the term’s account for last season’s champion
trainer Tony Fung.
In a race run at a good tempo, Kelowna
Star was a good ten lengths back in second-
last place for most of the run. He was under
a hard ride coming to the turn and was just
starting to tack onto the field, but once in the
straight, Hamel brought the nine-year-old to
the extreme outside and he literally sprouted
wings with a dazzling turn of foot to run right
over the top of his rivals.
At the line it was Kelowna Star by one and
three-quarters from Fasuba (Power), with
Tuhao Choice (Jakkalberry) in third.
In his four-year-old days with James Moore,
Kelowna Star was just that; a real star in taking
out the Four-Year-Old Prelude (Listed, 1500m)
and the Macau Guineas, then later in the year
winning the first of his back-to-back wins in the
Autumn Trophy (Listed, 1600m).

Age takes its toll on us all and Kelowna Star
was no exception. The gelding’s form tapered
off with wins far and few between until June this
year, when he downed a decent Class 1 & 2 field
over 1500 metres on the turf before a couple of
well-below-par efforts again.
On Saturday, however, it was the old
Kelowna Star that stepped up to the mark again
and produced his same old brilliant finish.
Danny Wong’s Number Zero (Showcasing)
made it four wins from his last six runs with a
sterling effort to win Saturday’s Class 3 over
1510 metres on a rain-soaked sand surface,
after the Taipa racetrack was inundated with
very heavy rain throughout the afternoon.
Ridden by the underrated C F (Charlie)
Chan, Number Zero was caught in a difficult
spot wide from gate 12 as the field went into the
back; to add to his troubles Number Zero picked
up the bit and began to race fiercely. Chan took
advantage of the straight stretch in the back to
loop the field, and found himself on the outside
of the leader Still So Cute (Thewayyouare) as
they swung the circle from the 600 metres to the
home turn.
The five-year-old then showed great
courage to stave off a late run by Pearl Lucky
(Red Giant) to win by three quarters of a length,
with Beautiful Eighteen (Epaulette) in third.
Number Zero has been a good buy for his
owners Cheng Yan Tung, Wang Chang Gui and
Lam Kwun Sang Ovo, and is another of the
Showcasing (Oasis Dream) breed that have
shown a liking for the Macau sand surface;
although on Saturday, he really showed his
versatility with wins now on the turf on both
good and heavy tracks as well as the all-weather.
With only seven runs under his belt the
gelding has posted four wins and one second spot
and has already picked up over HKD$600,000
(approx. AUD$106,600) for connections.

Atlante (Fastnet Rock) registered his first
Group 1 winner on Saturday when Callsign
Mav (4 g ex Raadisi by Volksraad) took out
the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) in a major
upset at Hastings. Sent out at 80-1, the John

a strong tempo set by Deerfield (Falkirk).
Switched off the fence by Jonathan Riddell, the
four-year-old chased through strongly before
holding off the late surge of Supera (Savabeel)
to win by three-quarters of a length. Favourite

Purchased for just NZ$3,000 as a weanling out
of the Windsor Park Stud draft at the 2017 NZB

to Dolder Grand (Candy Ride) in third. “He is
such an amazing horse,” said Kimura, who

Natalma Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Woodbine on
Sunday. The Chuck Fipke homebred, trained
by Roger Attfield, remained unbeaten from
two starts, overcoming barrier issues to
score by three-quarters of a length over Alda

Charm (Dubawi) and Bean Feasa (Dubawi).
Dutch Art - Exceptional (3 f ex Expressive
by Falbrav) lived up to her name as she stayed
on strongly to win the Scottish Sprint EBF
Fillies Stakes (Listed, 5.5f) at Ayr on Friday. A
two-year-old winner, this was her third career
success and first at stakes level, providing
Cheveley Park sire Dutch Art (Medicean) with
a 40th stakes winner. Exceptional defeated
Last Empire (Pivotal) by a length with Dandy’s
Beano (Dandy Man) a further length and a
quarter back in third. A homebred for Cheveley
Park Stud, she is the fifth foal from Expressive
(Falbrav), who is a half-sister to Group 1 winner
Echelon (Danehill) and dual Group 2 winner
Chic (Machiavellian). Dutch Art stood for a
private fee in 2020.
