FILMTHEMES(writtenbyinfluencefilmclub.com)AFRICANAMERICANSPORTRAYEDASCRIMINALSDatingbacktoD.W.Griffith’s1915BIRTHOFANATION,AfricanAmericanshavecontinuallybeenportrayedascriminalsinmanyformsofAmericanmedia.Throughthislens,thepublicatlargehascometounconsciouslybelievethatblackpeoplearemorelikelytobecomerapists,drugaddicts,murderersorthievespurelybecauseofthecoloroftheirskin.ThemoreoneseesimagesandhearsstoriesofAfricanAmericanscommittingcrimes,whetheritistrueornot,themorelikelyoneistobelievethatAfricanAmericansareindeedcriminals.MASSINCARCERATIONASREPLACEMENTFORSLAVERYAsAmendmentXIIIstates,“Neitherslaverynorinvoluntaryservitude,exceptasapunishmentforcrimewhereofthepartyshallhavebeendulyconvicted,shallexistwithintheUnitedStates,oranyplacesubjecttotheirjurisdiction.”Yet,countlesscorporationshaveprisonerswhohavebeenputtoworkwithoutpayaspartoftheirsentencing.Sincetheabolishmentofslavery,politicianshaveimplementedpoliciesthatfeedoffofthemedia-generatedfearofblackcriminals,disproportionatelyputtingAfricanAmericansbehindbarswheretheycanbeusedasfreelabor.CORPORATEINTERESTSSHAPEPRISONPOPULATIONTheAmericanLegislativeExchangeCouncil,betterknownasALEC,acoalitionofcorporateinterestslikeWalmartandVerizon,introducesfederalpolicieswhicharguablyresultinputtingAfricanAmericansandimmigrantsbehindbarsintheinterestofprofiteeringfromthesuccessofprivateprisons,surveillance,andprisonlabor.OneinfourUSlegislatorshavetiestoALEC,someofwhomhaveintroducedbillsandpolicieswithoutevenbotheringtoremoveALEC’sbrandingfromthembeforedispersingthemtocolleagues.THEDEHUMANIZATIONOFAFRICANAMERICANSByportrayingblackpeopleascriminals,deprivingtheircommunitiesoffinancialresourcesthatputthemonalevelplayingfieldtotheirwhitecompatriots,developingpublicpoliciesthataremorelikelytoseepeopleofcolorplacedbehindbars,andcreatingprisonsystemsthataremeanttopunishandbreakpeopleratherthanhelpthemrehabilitateandreentersociety,Americahasconsciously,orunconsciously,dehumanizeditsblackpopulation.
