Walt Disney FL 20992176 Canadian CD 12” 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 4) Notes: This is a feature-length cartoon film. Aladdin is directed by, Jafar, the Sultan's scheming advisor, to recover the magic lamp in a cave in the desert guarded by the Tiger-God. In the first chamber, Aladdin and his monkey, Abu, meet the magic carpet that shows them where to find the lamp. They had been warned

    http://caveinspiredmusic.com/rubriques/3_film_music/3_film_music.html

  • not to touch anything other than the lamp but Abu spots a huge jewel in the hands of a monkey statue. When he tries to grab the jewel the cave walls start to collapse and the floor to sink. They are trapped in the cave with the magic carpet. Aladdin inspects the lamp and when he cleans it the genie appears in a cloud of smoke. Genie explains that Aladdin has become his master and he will grant him three wishes. Aladdin tricks the Genie into freeing them from the Cave without utilizing a wish, and then uses his first to become a prince to be near Princess Jasmine. Computer animation was used for some elements of the film, such as the tiger entrance of the Cave of Wonders (see on left) and the scene where Aladdin tries to escape the collapsing cave. (Anon. 2017)

Cue starts with ringing keyboards, then threatening strings and more ringing chords, whorls & building ensemble, staccato passages, excitement and clashes, and a slow build-up frenzied finale. The music on this album earned composer Alan Menken the Academy Award for Best Original Score and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. Alan Menken wrote other cave inspired film music; see below, The Little Mermaid for which he won an Oscar for Best Original Score. CAVE KIDS THEME THE CAVE KIDS CRAWL Television Series – Children’s – Sing-Along – Vocal & Instrumental

Comp: (Unknown) Scr. (Film): Joseph Barbera, William Hanna, Don Goodman, etc.

Perf: CAVE KIDS Dir. (Film): Kris Zimmerman, 1996 Prod. Co: Rhino Records Liner Notes: (Colored Lyric Book) Time: (Tk 1) 0:43 & (Tk 7) ? CD: PEBBLES AND BAMM-BAMM: CAVE KIDS SING-ALONG Kid Rhino 72523 (Tks 1 & 7) Notes: The Cave Kids were originally created by Hanna-Barbera and first appeared on the Flintstones TV

series in 1963: Pebbles Flintstone at the end of the third season and Bamm-Bamm Rubble during the fourth season. In 1963 they also got their own Gold Key comic book series that went to 16 issues. Starting in 1996 there was a spinoff series, Cave Kids Adventures, on the Cartoon Network. Regarding this Cave Kids Sing-Along CD, Billboard reported that this album “is the accompanying music piece to the series with seven songs, including five featured in the series via kiddie music videos.” (Anon. 1997) Nothing is known about the composer or the performers. Some Web sites (Allmusic & Amazon.de) list the first track as “Cave Kids Therme,” but this is obviously a typo error.

  • A portion of the cartoon video of the theme song showed a spiky purple dinosaur (Stegosaurus?) in a cave where simplistic drawings of bones and comets are on the walls. A redheaded kid (Pebbles) and a cave kid (Bamm-Bamm) near the cave entrance are scared by the dinosaur and chased outside, but the dinosaur morphs into a friendly round-headed dinosaur. Part of the chorus – Everybody wants to be a caveman The second song, The Cave Kids Crawl, here was not heard. CAVEMAN INKI Soundtrack – Children’s – Orchestral – Instrumental

Comp: Carl STALLING Rts: Warner Bros. Inc. (ASCAP) Scr. (Film): Michael Maltese

    Perf: (Studio Orchestra)

Cond: Carl STALLING Dir. (Film): Chuck M. Jones, 1950 Prod. Co. (Film): Warner Brothers Pictures Prod. (Disc): Hal Willner Prod. Co: Deep Creek Productions Inc. Liner Notes: John Zorn, Dick Blackburn, & Greg Ford Time: 1:29 Compilation CD: THE CARL STALLING PROJECT (1990) C. STALLING Warner Bros. 9 26027-2 (Tk 10 – Pt.1) Notes: This cue was used for a Warner Brothers cartoon in 1950. A somewhat kooky old school Warner Brothers cartoon where “the character, Inki, represents one of the first occasions for the film industry to present a black character with a non-ridiculing appearance.” (Cotoclop 2012).

Main Title Newspaper Ad Inki & Minah Bird

A little African boy, Inki, with a bone through his hair and carrying a spear exits his cave to hunt. He spears a flower and a bee takes out after him, but Inki makes it to the door of his cave and slams it closed. Then an earthquake splits a mountain wide open and out of a fissure clickity-clops a Mynah bird. Later one of the pups nursing its mother in a cave spots the bone in Inki’s headdress passing by outside and goes chasing after him. They race along a cliff trail and crash into a caveman wearing an animal pelt and chef’s hat (seen on left) who is stirring a red soup in front of his cave. What follows is a long sequence where Inki chases the

Mynah bird and the pup chases Inki. There’s some stuff where they chases each other in and out of a series of craters and more stuff with a brontosaurus. Then back to the caveman eating his red soup in front

  • of his cave, only this time he’s waiting for them and he catches Inki and the pup in a bent-tree rope trap. But when the caveman returns to his meal the bowl is empty and the Mynah bird walks off wearing the animal pelt and chef’s hat. Carl Stalling “was a visionary whose work deserves consideration among the finest American avant-garde music ever recorded… [he] didn't just break the rules, he made them irrelevant… Stalling introduced the avant-garde into the mainstream, and as popular music continues to diversify and hybridize, his stature as a pioneer rightfully continues to grow.” (Ankeny 2017) With a jungle tom-tom rhythm, Stalling weaves in and out of a melody on woodwinds, strings, and other

instruments. It is the first in a medley of five cues entitled "Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals." The cues on this album were dubbed directly off the music/effect tracks of the cartoons. It is interesting to note that Carl Stalling used the melody of Mendelssohn’s Fingal's Cave Overture as a walking melody for the mynah bird in the half-dozen Inki cartoons. (Goldmark 2005) Here is a list of those Chuck Jones cartoons: The Little Lion Hunter (1939); Inki and the Lion (1941); Inki and the Minah Bird (1943); Inki at the Circus (1947); and Caveman Inki (1950) (Rothman 2010)

evacuates the herd, leaving Aladar, the lemurs, the older dinosaurs, and Bruton behind, while the Carnotaurus are in pursuit some distance away. During a rainstorm, the stragglers spend the night in the cave, where Plio heals Bruton, and the Carnotaurs find and attack them. Bruton saves the others and sacrifices himself, causing a cave in to kill the female Carnotaurus in the process. As the rest of the group venture deeper through the cave, the male Carnotaurus having survived, resumes its search for the herd.” (Anon. 2017) “They walk through the cave, and almost come out the other

But Baylene hulks out and they make it out and end up in the Nesting Grounds.” (Anon. 2000) The slow, sad cue for strings and woodwinds that kind of drags on in a haunting way, fades and returns, but doesn’t go anywhere. MAGI LUNE’S CAVE – The first cue is for the scene where the young fairy, Crysta, goes to visit Magi Lune, the oldest fairy in the forest. The harp music here creates a mysterious atmosphere followed by long choral notes leading to a crescendo. The distant rumble of thunder and threatening woodwinds conclude. THE GROTTO SONG – The second cue covers the scene in the Blue Grotto where the walls glow with soft blue light. Crysta and her human friend, Zak, cross several cave pools to reach the inner Blue Grotto where the twinkling light is due to millions of glowworms hanging from the ceiling. The music of the second cue starts with the sound of running water and frogs, then a pleasant string and keyboard melody. Some rather over-bearing drum beats in later passages. Twinkling chords and running water return at the end.

Magi Lune’s Cave The Grotto Crysta in Grotto The interesting aspect regarding this soundtrack is that all the music was performed on the giant synclavier, which is able to recreate the sounds of all the instruments of a studio symphony orchestra. Alan Silvestri also composed the score for Clan of the Cave Bear – see under Prehistory. There Sid (a ground sloth) and Diego (a saber-toothed cat) learn about Manny's (a mammoth) past and his previous interactions with the human hunters, in which his wife and child were killed, leaving Manny a depressed loner.”

Sid showing the baby the cave paintings Manny looks at paintings of mammoth family Manny the mammoth watches an animated series of cave paintings that show how his family was killed by prehistoric stick men with spears and arrows. The baby understands and tries to console Manny. The polychrome mammoth cave paintings shown in this animated scene are pure imagination, not inspired by actual cave paintings of Paleolithic mammoths, for the simple reason that no polychrome mammoth cave paintings have ever been found. All of the many known paintings (Grotte de Rouffignac, etc.) are black pigment drawings on cave walls. However, the Upper Paleolithic (10 000 B.C.) or Mesolithic stick men with spears or bow & arrow were directly inspired by those from the shelter caves in the Valltorta Gorge in Castellón, Spain or elsewhere in Spanish Levant (for more information see under Cave Picture Covers – Real Caves – Spain). Nevertheless, it’s very nice to see these prehistoric cave paintings brought to life even if we have to watch two adult mammoths embracing each other. A slow, quiet cue where the piano picks out a few phrases then low jungle percussions fill in behind, a flute and oboes are joined by strings. Notes: Ariel, a mermaid princess, is dissatisfied with underwater life in the kingdom of Atlantica and is curious about the human world. With her best friend Flounder, Ariel collects human artifacts in her grotto and often goes to the surface of the ocean. Her secret grotto is large cavern that has a large round stone covering the entrance. Inside are hollowed out shelves for which she stores and displays her discoveries. Following a shipwreck Ariel rescues Prince Eric and takes him to shore. “Back at Ariel's grotto, Flounder reveals that he had saved the statue of Eric from the wreck, much to Ariel's delight. However, the pleasantries are interrupted by King Triton …. After a short argument, Ariel confronts Triton and tells him that she rescued Eric from drowning to death. In his anger, Triton confronts Ariel and decimates all of her secret grotto treasures and reduces them to a junk pile, leaving Ariel in tears.” (Anon. n.d.)

Ariel the Mermaid in her Treasure Cave King Trident destroys the statue of Prince Eric This cue was used for the scene where King Triton, angry at his daughter, the mermaid Princess Ariel, for rescuing a human Prince and falling in love with him, decides to punish her by destroying the underwater cave where she keeps her collection of human objects recovered from shipwrecks. The sample of the cue on YouTube has snatches of dialog but the mix highlights the music. Opening with wonder ringing chords; then low woodwinds and brass set a somber tone. The tension builds as the ensemble reaches crescendo then stops clean. The music for this film won the Oscar for Best Original Score in 1989.

Frogs and Birds, Bugs and Bats is a song sung by Pepito in Madeline and the Bad Hat. The Spanish Ambassador moves in next door. His son, Pepito, is not a good boy. Madeline dubs him a 'bad hat'. The book is controversial due to the cruel nature of Pepito's mischief. In this song Pepito is showing off his menagerie to the girls, who are appalled by his cruelty towards animals. After he suffers from his own actions, Pepito reforms himself. (Anon. n.d.) The audio clip had the orchestra playing a creepy, plodding theme, horns and piano, and a witch’s voice singing. The first stanza – My frogs and birds, bugs and bats,

Squirrels, hedgehogs, and two cats, These are the animals I keep. Sometimes I even let them sleep.

  • Sulley and Mike are exiled to the Himalayas, where they meet the Abominable Snowman (the Yeti). In the snow cave the Yeti welcomes Sulley and Mike by offering them lemon snow cones, which Mike turns down with a scowl. While the Yeti tries to make Mike and Sulley feel at home in his abode, he understands Sulley must rescue Boo, and tells him of a Nepalese village at the foot of the mountain where they can regain the portal back to the monster world. The Yeti says it’s a three day hike to get there. Sulley roars, “We need to get there now,” and pounds the cave wall causing an icicle to fall and skitter across the cave floor to the junk at the back of the cave, which gives him the idea to start building a wooden sled from materials there. Mike gets mad at Sulley and throws snow cones at him. The Yeti goes off in search of more snow cones. Sulley takes his improvised sled with its nice hanging lantern and, against the ill-will of Mike, races full speed down the mountain to the Nepalese village.

Sulley at cave entrance – Yeti offers snow cones Sulley prepares to sled down mountain The first part of this short cue has low mournful brass and strings followed by the furious ensemble and brass fanfare accompanying the wild descent of the mountain on sled. (Disc): MCA Records Time: (Tk 7) 3:25 & (Tk 10) 2:53 CD: TOM SAWYER MCA Nashville 088 170 115-2 (Tks 7 & 10) Notes: The scenes in the cave have little to do with what happens in Mark Twains’ story: Tom strikes two stones together to light his torch; the passages in the cave all have nice wide, flat floors; he falls down a deep pit and lands in a shallow rimstone dam pool; Becky jumps down after him; the torch falls in the water but Tom lights it again with two stones; a colony of bats attack them; they find a skeleton where a double waterfall pours down through the eyes of the skull. After continuing on a ways they find themselves lost, back at the skeleton. Tom comforts Becky and then he sings the song, Light at the End of the Tunnel, as they explore further. Becky kisses Tom and he writes “Tom lovɘs Bɘcky” on the cave floor. Tom spots daylight at the end of the passage and light at the end of a long level ramp across a chasm. They proceed, singing the song as they go.

Tom & Becky in cave In rimstone dams room They discover the skeleton Arriving at a cave lake and waterfall they spot a chest of gold coins underwater and they dance for joy. The townsfolk search party arrives in the cave, gets confused as to which cave ramp to follow. On the shore of the cave lake Becky holds Tom by the tail as he bends over to grab coins from the treasure chest. Suddenly Injurin' Joe [resembling a cave bear guy] appears from behind the waterfall and takes a swipe at Tom. Tom falls in the lake, followed by Joe. Tom swims to surface and rejoins Becky. Joe surfaces also, but Tom strikes his nose with the torch, and the two kids take off with an extinguished torch. Huckleberry Finn searches for them elsewhere in cave. Joe pursues Tom & Becky but is stopped by a small passage, which he easily smashes open to size and continues chasing them across a thin natural bridge, all in total darkness. But he is thwarted because the bridge breaks under his weight, so he leaps the gap and continues the pursuit. Tom finally relights their torch and they find themselves back to the skeleton so they head for the rimstone dams room. Joe appears and Tom beckons him to follow them up over the pools to a natural bridge remnant in a huge chamber.

Bat colony attacks Bats attack Joe Joe falls to his death The action continues as Joe attacks and the townsfolk search party arrives at the other end of the chamber. Tom throws his torch at Joe. From a high ledge Huck lances a fishing line, catches the torch, and flings it up at the bats hanging at the cave ceiling. The bat colony attack Joe while Tom and Becky make their escape back to the rimstone dams room. While fighting off the bats Joe smashes a huge column which causes part of the ceiling in the big chamber to collapse and water starts pouring in. Joe dies as bridge remnant collapses, but Huck grabs onto a stalactite, which breaks, falls in the water, and floats (?). Tom and Becky follow along as Huck is carried downstream and Tom manages to grab Huck’s hand to rescue him. More collapse occurs, the cave floods, and the night sky is now visible through a newly created skylight. Tom, Becky, and Huck find themselves on a ledge opposite from the townsfolk. They cross over to

  • them on stepping stones, presumably the tops of submerged stalagmites, but one is the dead body of Joe. All reunited leave the cave. On the soundtrack album there are two different performances of this song, which was specially written for this animation film. The song was sung when Tom and Becky were lost in McDougal’s Cave (called Deadman’s Cave in film). In the sample of the first performance we hear Bryan White and Rebecca Howard singing a pretty sappy song where the chorus is –

There's a light at the end of the tunnel. Just you wait and see. There's a place far away from our troubles, There's a light beyond the night shinning for you and me.

For full lyrics see under Film Song Lyrics. The complete sample of the second performance has Tom (Rhett Akens) singing the first verse of the song followed by spoken dialogue between Tom and Becky (Lee Ann Womack) in the cave with music background. The song is woven in with the dialogue with Rhett Akens singing as Tom and Hynden Walch standing in for Becky when they sing together.
