Development.

The first step in the development of the film is the story. The Producer finds a story that he or she would like to see made into a film before creating a general synopsis of the movie. This general synopsis is then turned into a screenplay and is drafted several times in order to make it the best it can be.

• A film distributor is contacted to assess the success of the film; taking into account many different factors such as the target audience, possible actors, genre of the film and assess the potential success that it could have to decide whether it is worth being made into the final product.

A sales pitch is then created to present the film to financers and, if given the go ahead, the creation of the film then moves on to the pre-production stage.

Production

The production is the actual creation of the film. All of the cast and crew should know where they have to be and at what time based on the Schedule they have been given. First of all, everybody who is needed should arrive on the set, actors usually the last to arrive so that the crew can set up things such as makeup and hair. Whilst the equipment needed for the day is organised, the makeup and wardrobe crew get to work on the cast to transform them into their characters.

The actors then get a chance for a final rehearsal of the script before the scene is shot. Everybody is warned that filming is about to commence using the command ‘Pictures Up’ to ensure that everyone is quiet. ‘Action’ is the command given to commence filming whist ‘Cut’ is given to stop it. Once the day is over, the next schedule is handed out so that everybody knows where to be on the next day. and occasionally a meeting is held to discuss how filming is going

Post Production

Post Production is everything that happens once filming is over. All of the editing takes place in the post production stage; cutting out any unneeded footage and selecting the best shots to include in the film. The music and non diegetic sound is added in as well as all of the titles.

Page 21: Film production

Once all editing has been done and the film is complete, it is distributed to cinemas or to DVD. The marketing and promotion of the film also happens mainly in the post production stage, however occasionally the teaser trailer is shot even before all of the footage has been shot, in order to get an early start on gaining publicity for the film. Trailers, Posters, Merchandise and online advertising such as websites are created at this stage. There is usually a press party and several conferences as well as the stars of the film participating in interviews and photo shoots to help promote the film.
