SIKA-R...AX, is a brand name for GKN Sinter Metals’
high porosity, stainless filter elements manufactured by
our co-axial pressing process.
Production and materialsGKN sintered filter elements can be made from any metallur-gical material produced as a powder. Shape, size and distribu-tion of the powder particles are important parameters that affectthe final properties of high porosity sintered parts. Porous sin-tered metals are produced to provide specific characteristics.Porosity, being the number, size and shape of the pores, isusually the determining factor in producing a porous sinteredmetal part. Besides permeability, grade efficiency, mechanicalstrength, and corrosion resistance of the porous sintered metalpart are also of prime importance for the field application.
SIKA-R...AX elements are manufactured in a wide variety ofmaterials depending on the requirement. The most popularmaterials are stainless steel alloys as well as Titanium, Monel,Inconel, Hastelloy and other special materials.
Pressing process
SIKA-R...AX filter elementsare manufactured by co-axialpressing. The metal powderis filled into the appropriatedies and compacted in an axi-al direction by means of anupper and a lower ram. Thepore size of the finished prod-uct can be controlled by thechoice of powder size andthe pressing force used toform the part. A wide range of finished shapes can be ob-tained by means of this pressing process.
Sintering
The compacted part is re-moved and then sintered in aspecially designed furnaces.Sintering is the fundamentalprocessing step for all Pow-dered Metal (P/M) products. It is the process of bondingthe powder particles by fus-ing together at temperatureswell below their melting point. After sintering, regardless ofmicron size, the separate grain structure of the original pow-dered metal becomes fully inter-linked to form a rigid part. Sin-tering gives the high porosity material the shape, stability andproperty of a strong metal component.SIKA-R...AX materials are used as self-supporting structuralelements. The pores after the sintering process are mechani-cally fixed with respect to both size and position.
SIKA-R...AX, ein Markenname von GKN Sinter Metals,
ist die Bezeichnung für hochporöse, rostfreie co-axial
gefertigte Filterelemente.
Pressverfahren
SIKA-R...AX Filterelementewerden mittels axialer Press-technik hergestellt.

The accuracy of theequation in the sim-plified form is ade-quate for estimatingthe pressure drop ata given flow rate andmedium. The afore-mentioned asymp-totic approximationto a maximum valueindicates already thatthe relation betweenthe pressure drop and the variable affecting it cannot be linear. It can rather be broken down into a linear and a turbulentportion. However, this is only significant at high flow. In the case ofgases, the dependency of the density on the pressure dropmust be taken into account.

In laminar flow, the particles follow in parallel paths. The re-sistance generated by viscosity losses results in a pressuredrop which increases linearly proportionally to the flow rate in

Permeability
In accordance with the function of a filter, besides the dimen-sional check and strength test, the quality evaluation dealschiefly with the filter characteristics, the filter grade, the poresize and the permeability or pressure drop at a given flow rate. The flow rate of a filter is dependent on the applied differen-tial pressure and increases up to a maximum value which isreached asymptotically.Measurement of the permeability, usually using air, can beperformed quite simply. The measured variables are theapplied pressure p, the pressure drop ∆p = p1-p2 and the flowrate V of the air at constant pressure and temperature. The viscosity of the flowing medium is an important para-meter for the flow rate, as a function of the pressure drop.Darcy’s equation shows the relation between the variable in asimplified form:
.

The diameter dx relates to a circular pore the circumference ofwhich equals that of the real irregularly shaped pore.Sintered metal filters feature not only one pore size, but apore size spectrum. Today, the latter is determined using anautomated measuring instrumentbased on the ”Bubble-Point“ principle(ASTM E1294). However, when evalu-ating the results, it has to be kept inmind that the principle is based onparallel cylindrical capillaries. The ”real“pore size and hence also the pore sizedistribution is smaller by a factor of2-5 because sintered metals consistof a pore labyrinth with irregularlyshaped pores.
9
a laminar flow. The characteristic value in which all parametersinfluencing the laminar flow are combined is designated as afriction-dependent permeability coefficient α. In the case of aturbulent flow, other velocity components pointing in all direc-tions overlay the main flow. Further resistance is generated by the inertia of the particleswhich counteract the flow direction. As a result of this dynamicportion, the inertia-dependent permeability coefficient β, thepressuredrop increases exponentially with the flow rate.
Bubble-Point Test and pore size distribution
The ”Bubble-Point Test“, also referred as ”gas bubble test“, pro-vides a simple method of determining the size of the appar-ently ”largest“ pore. The porous element to be tested isimmersed in a liquid with a known low surface tension (usuallyisopropanol). Following this, pressurized air is applied to oneside of the sample and the air pres-sure increased until the first bubbleappears. This pressure is called the”Bubble-Point“ pressure.
Making due allowance for the surfacetension and the pressure required toopen the first pore and assuming acircular pore shape, the ”apparently“largest pore can be calculated accord-ing to the following equation:
dx = „scheinbarer“ Porendurchmesser [m]δ = Oberflächenspannung [N/m]cos ϕ = Benetzungswinkel [–]∆px = Druckdifferenz am Filter [Pa]
dx = ”apparent” pore diameter [m]δ = Surface tension [N/m]cos ϕ = Wetting angle [–]∆px = Pressure drop at filter [Pa]

Average CCE pore diameter
The average ”CCE” pore diameter is an equivalent diameterthat provides a definite description of any filter material (referto ASTM F902).This dimension designates the diameter of a cylindrical capil-lary that would produce the same pressure drop as the filtermaterial. In this case the length of the capillary corresponds tothe thickness of the filter material.
Laminardurchmesser

Shear strength
Determination of the shear strength is a suitable method ofobtaining information on the strength of the material. Shearstrength determination was adoptedbecause tensile strength is more dif-ficult to measure and the tensile testresults obtained are usually insuffi-cient for strength evaluation underthese load conditions. The shear testis carried out with a hole punch whichis shown in the schematic.

Scherfestigkeit

Grade efficiency
The process of separating particles dispersed in a liquid or ingases or on the surface of and in the pores of a filter mediumdepends on a great number of influencing factors and is diffi-cult to identify in terms of physics. It is affected by the prop-erties of the particles and the fluid as well as particle size, particle size distribution, particle concentration, agglomerationbehaviour, temperature and composition, it is chiefly the filtermedium which determines separation to a large extent. In gasor fluid filtration, different physical mechanisms contribute to-wards the separation process in addition to the particle size. When cleaning a fluid, three different factors can be significantfor the efficiency of a filter:
• the sieve effect• the impact effect• the adsorption.
Particles larger than the pore cross section are retained as aresult of the sieve effect, which is comparable with the effectof an area filter, e.g. a wire-cloth screen. Medium size particleswhich are capable of penetrating into the pore system impingeupon the pore walls and deflect within the ramified pores, thus loosing kinetic energy and remaining in the pore labyrinth.Particles which are considerably smaller than the nominal pore size canbe caught bythe filter in themicrorough po-re wall by ad-sorption.
For practicaldeterminationof the separat-ing behaviour,a test sus-pension withknown particlesize distribu-tion is appliedto the filter. The separationgrade or micronrating can thenbe determinedfrom the par-ticle size distribution in the filtrate as compared to the initialparticle size distribution. For practical purposes, the particlesize at which 98% of the particles are separated is usuallygiven as the micron rating. However, this figure is only valid as long as the filter is in newcondition. During service, the filtration performance will improvethanks to cake formation or the influence of individual particles(deposition in the pores) as described above.
Trenngrad
