Your advantage
Weiss is one of the few companies
providing custom-tailored plants,
air-conditioning units, components
and process technology for clean
room applications from a single source.
Filter Fan Units that are optimal
for all clean rooms
Different clean room concepts such as
negative pressure plenum or circulating
air operation can be implemented by
FFUs from Weiss.
Besides supplying larger clean rooms,
FFUs are also suitable for implementing
clean room islands or clean worksta-
tions.
Predictable changes in use or changing
process sequences in clean rooms
require a flexible clean-air supply
system. A concept using FFUs is ideal
for this, in order to realize a clean
room concept adapted to the process
requirements by an easily altered
arrangement of FFUs, lighting and
ceiling panels.
Upgrading of clean rooms to a higher
clean room classification can also be
implemented very easily by increasing
the number of FFUs. Using the various
open-loop and closed-loop control sys-
tems employed by Weiss, appropriate
control systems, even computer-aided
systems, can be implemented for FFU
applications ranging from simple ones
to complex facilities with hundreds of
FFUs.

In the Weiss FFUs, motors with low
power consumption and maximum ser-
vice life are employed. Only as much
electricity is consumed for the clean air
supply as absolutely necessary, thanks
to the possibility of completely control-
ling the individual FFUs with E.C. motor
technology, via special control soft-
ware.

High performance in relevant dimensions
Highest quality standards
Always highest standards are deman-
ded to the quality of clean rooms and
clean room components. These high
standards also involve stricter demands
for a low-turbulence, uniform inflow of
air. In Weiss FFUs, the supply air flow
required is implemented by adapting
the fan size or r.p.m.
Uniform air flows are ensured by optimum
adjustment of the motor and rotor and
the high quality of the filters. Weiss
FFUs are tested with respect to the air
flow, pressure losses and power
consumption in a special testing cham-
ber, according to DIN/EN/ISO 5801.
Here the air velocities are measured in
a specified matrix keeping a defined
distance to the filter.

Weiss Filter Fan Units are especially
quiet-running. Special methods of noise
measurement are employed.
Peaks in the frequency range are
identified, and improvements carried
out consistently.
Optimum noise levels are achieved by
a combination of ideal coordination of
the used material, the perfect layout of
motor/running wheel unit as well as
the use of sound-absorbing insulation.
In Weiss FFUs, particular attention is
also paid to reducing vibrations. Low
vibration of the motor, rotor wheel
and housing guarantee resonances
as low as possible and a high process
reliability.

ceiling fitPrecise
FFUs and ceiling installation
With Weiss FFUs it is very easy to fit
them precisely into various ceiling
constructions. The dimensions of
housings and filters are resulting from
the dimensions of the supporting
ceiling construction. The installation
and maintenance of the FFUs, and the
replacement of the filters, can be done
from the clean room or the plenum
side.
The standard type of the FFUs is de-
signed for assembly and filter exchange
from the plenum side.
FFU standard sizes
Square and rectangular ceiling geome-
tries can be implemented without diffi-
culty with the various dimensions and
process adaptations. Irregular ceiling
areas or room layouts (see illustration
below) can be covered completely very
easily with the help of the different
unit sizes.

Design variants and accessories
The Weiss FFUs are designed for
all clean room classes and applica-
tions.
Weiss FFUs can be made to a standard
design or customized to the particular
requirements. Various arrangements of
standard FFUs in the ceiling matrix in
combination with corresponding filters
allow the respective requirements for
clean air supply and process needs to
be met precisely. The possible versions
for exactly fitting installations on the
plenum or clean room side ensure per-
fect planning and installation.
Arrangement of FFUs installed on plenum side
Equipment and materials
The Weiss FFUs are supplied in the
following housing versions:
Galvanized sheet metal (standard)
Aluminum, aluminum anodiced
Powder-coated sheet metal
Stainless steel
On request, acoustic insulation linings
of glass fibers, rock wool, or foam
plastic are supplied, depending on re-
quirements. The FFUs are manufactured
to the respective fireproof classifica-
tions required.
The FFUs can be supplied with dry or
fluid seals. Water heat exchangers for
cooling or heating can be integrated
into the FFU on the suction side.
FFUs can be fitted with an electric hea-
ting system as a heater. In process-
critical steps, FFUs can be fitted with
heat-resistant HEPA filters, for example
as dryers.
In order to achieve the adapted airflow
needed in clean rooms, it makes sense
to use various air diffusers. Swirl plates
cause a high degree of mixing in the
clean room with a turbulent mixed
flow.
With perforated-plate outlets or fabric
diffusers mounted underneath, an
optimized, low-turbulence displace-
ment flow is obtained.
It is not always possible to avoid pollu-
tion of the return air. In order to pro-
tect the FFU and the high-quality HEPA
filter, preliminary filters of filter classes
G1 to G4 and F7 to F9 are available.
HEPA filters are available in classes H10
to H14 and U15 to U17, with various
filter media.
In order to meet the requirements for
perfect lighting in different clean-room
design concepts, flush-mounted, sur-
face-mounted, or teardrop luminaires
are a useful accessory. In combination
with the ceiling-matrix profile sections
and ceilings available, these allow com-
plete systems to be implemented.

FFU drive and AC technology
In the Weiss FFUs, both AC and EC mo-
tors are employed. Both types of drive
have their own specific advantages.
AC motor technology is tried-and-
tested, while the more modern EC
technology is mainly preferred for its
energy efficiency and its large control
area.
AC motor technology
In the asynchronous motor control
technology (AC) the speed is optimally
controlled via variation of the voltage
by frequency transformers. The AC
motor system cannot be disturbed by
interference. The combination of lower
capital costs with easy-to-control
motors is the preferred version for
many smaller and simpler projects.
Infinitely-variable speed control
for AC motors
The single-phase and three-phase AC
motors can be controlled by infinitely-
variable closed-loop speed controls.
The actual value is measured by air-
speed sensors. Depending on the type
of controller and expansion module,
different fittings and functions can be
selected, such as:
Power switch
Digital display or multifunction
display
Closed-loop controller or actuator
operation
Motor protection via thermal contact
or PTC thermistor
Floating status-annunciator relay
External switching over to a second
setpoint
Digital inputs and outputs

EC motors are considerably more energy-efficient than AC motors
EC motor technology
EC fans have an electronically commu-
tated permanent-magnet direct-current
motor. This technology provides very
quiet running, long life, and savings in
energy. Integrated monitoring functions
protect the motor and electronic circui-
try. The stepless control of the air
quantity is done via integrated electro-
nics.

Open and closed loop controls for EC systems
Weiss Fan Controller 200 for
controlling EC motors
The Weiss Fan Controller 200 is an
independent control and monitoring
unit for activating and controlling up
to 200 FFUs with EC motor technology,
via a bus system. The fans can be con-
trolled individually or in groups. The
unit’s clear menu system, in combina-
tion with the multifunction operator’s
controls, permits rapid and easy start-
up and operation.
The additional functions, such as auto-
matic day/night switchover (externally
or internally controlled), optional closed-
loop control function for speed, three-
level user-rights hierarchy, and a non-
volatile error memory (transmittable
serially) make the Weiss Fan Controller
200 a simple and intelligent solution
for controlling and monitoring
medium-sized FFU systems with EC
technology.

Controlling with the FFU Control Center
FFU Control Center
This PC-based software system for
open-loop and closed-loop control of
the FFUs is based on MS Internet
Explorer with the operating systems
MS Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
The FFUs are controlled by the Control
Center via a very fast Ethernet connec-
tion (10/100 Mbps). The interfacing
gateways translate the protocol into
commands in a form that the control-
lers can read. The tree structure makes
it possible to address each individual
FFU in a very orderly and targeted
manner. In addition, the following set-
tings can be made for each individual
FFU, for predefined groups, or for all of
them:
Changing the speed
Start/stop
Time-controlled changes
Logfile, monthly
Forming groups of any number of
FFUs
Any number of FFUs
Operation via PC and monitor screen
Upon restarting, or after a power out-
age, the system starts up automatically
with the values set most recently.
The FFUs can be represented individually andin groups.
Different FFUs can be predefined in the layout. Operating states (on/off, speed) arerepresented in different colors.
A customized screen design can be stored in the program as the background (“wallpaper”).
