Filters and Effects within our title sequence

By Erin Doneathy

Cool tones FilterOn every clip in our title sequence we chose to use the “cool tones” filter. We felt it gave the perfect atmosphere for our sequence, it darkens the colours in the footage and makes every clip seem dark and almost depressing. Even when added to the playful clips of April on the swing set it still manages to give it the sinister and gloomy atmosphere we were aiming for.

Telephone Audio Filter Throughout our title sequence we have a fair few audio clips of news reporters discussing Aprils disappearance, to make them sound as though they may be being heard on the television or through a car radio we added the “Telephone” audio filter. It gave it the perfect radio quality sound we were looking for. We tried out multiple filters, one even being called “television” but in the end “telephone” was our favourite.

Camcorder FilterWe used the camcorder filter whenever we wanted to create the impression that the kidnapper was filming April on his own camera. The filter made it appear more realistic and obvious that it was somebody within the world of the movie filming and not breaking the fourth wall.

Bad TV filterWe used the bad TV filter on certain clips, such as the one in the kidnappers shed that are from surveillance camera’s he has placed around the shed. We felt they gave the impression that the kidnapper can not perhaps afford expensive camera equipment and so they are fuzzy but also it gives a gloomier feel to the shed shots. We also used the bad TV filter when the kidnapper enters to follow April down the alleyway, we felt it creates an impression that his presence is bad news and also adds to the jump cuts we use.
