  • Filtration Applications for Final Products

The major products of refineries are gasoline, diesel, kerosene, heating oils, etc. To meet sales specifications, each of these products consists of a blend of several different streams produced through various refinery processes. These products are then stored in a refinery tank farm before delivery via pipelines, barges, rail, or tanker trucks to their final market.

The processing, transporting, and storing of refined petroleum products in tank farms involves custody transfers of partner and commingled stock, as well as blending complexities. As these liquid products are loaded and offloaded in bulk quantities, there is a large transfer of high value that makes it imperative for refiners to efficiently manage their tank farm operations to maximize their return on investment. Efficient management and operation of these tank farms is critical for a successful business.

It is through this system of fluid storage and transfer that various solid contaminants and suspended water can enter into the final product. Final product contamination can result in product rejection, reprocessing, and potential loss of business. To meet sales quality specifications and to protect downstream equipment, an optimal filtration system is required to remove both solid contaminants and water. The most common filtration problems are solids such as rust and pipe scale that can foul and erode distribution equipment (e.g. pumps, nozzles, meters, engines, etc.). Water contamination can cause engine maintenance problems such as corrosion and/or plugging in engine injection systems.

The below schematic should be viewed as a general example of where filtration systems could be located within a tank farm. These processes will vary between companies and facilities. As such, each application should be reviewed and considered individually in order to choose the correct system technology.

After crude oil is refined, the resulting refined petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, kerosene, etc.) are transferred to a storage tank farm and then distributed in bulk via pipeline, truck, rail, or tank barge to an end user, wholesaler, or retailer. Solid contaminants and water can enter the final product as it moves through pipelines, storage tanks, and at

every point of transfer. To ensure product quality, protect downstream equipment, reduce maintenance costs, and meet sales specifications; an efficient filtration system must be employed to remove both solid and liquid contaminants.
