Idea & company  The first question that any company hears from potential customers or the market in general is “what’s so special about you and your product that will specifically benefit me?” Our answer in a nutshell: HETA is a German engineering company. Not an office. Nor just a factory. Rather, it is a company that develops and provides technical solutions. With the ingenuity that can be expected of skilled and dedicated engineers. And the inventiveness with which we provide the desired solutions is implemented in our own production facilities: function follows engineering, which follows perfect implementation. But that’s not everything that’s special about HETA.

The first engineerIn their heart of hearts, engineers want to make the world a better place to  live  in. This was also true of the HETA founders, who brought the core skills of mechanical en-gineering  and  welding  into  their  startup.  Very  quickly, their own expertise in conjunction with specific demand meant that they concentrated their activities on filtration and separation.  This was complemented by  their  talent for planning and  implementing extremely complex solu-tions. As it is difficult to change the world if you are all on your own, the HETA team systematically started to grow. In time, the planning tools were supplemented with pro-duction equipment. The initial knowledge was expanded through experience after experience. And in addition to the home market, new markets opened up in the rest of Europe as well as Asia, Africa and the Americas.

HETA was founded in 1989 as an engineering office, started its own production in 1993 and today is an interna-tionally recognized specialist for the construction of filtra-tion and separation plant.

HETA production  successfully tackles compo-nents and subassemblies with a weight of up to 8000 kg. To enable this, the company employs correspondingly powerful machining, handling and lifting technology. A HETA polymer filtering system can weigh up to a total of 30 t.

From beginning to endQuality  always  starts  with  properly  un-derstanding  the  problem,  which  requires having  an  equal  understanding  of  every-thing  related  to  the  customer’s  specific process.  It  is  then  important  to draw  the right conclusions  from an  in-depth analy-sis. Only then it is possible to start devel-opment  of  an  effective  high  quality  idea for a solution. This all briefly describes the HETA  concept  of  high  quality  workman-ship. Following this, quality in the tradition of  “Made  in  Germany”  comes  into  play: implementation  of  products  and  systems using best practice with respect to mate-rial quality, precision manufacturing, total quality  assurance  and  objective  testing to  provide  the  necessary  documentation. Conceived  and  developed  in  Germany, produced  in Germany –  in most  cases  in our  own  production  facilities,  or  else  ex-clusively sourced from German suppliers.

Control is “Best Practice” Gaining and showing off quality certificates has become an essential part of industrial cooperation: The certified adherence to a standard is an absolute requirement. But what is behind all this? Trust! And the evidence that it is justified. Nevertheless, some HETA business activities are such that they cannot be evaluated with normal quality standards. For particularly demanding areas such as petrochemicals or nuclear energy, quality is synonymous with existential safety. This means that the certification can be viewed as an objectified safety control. The pleasure of adding valueThe  filtration  and  separation  applications  provided  by HETA use a number of different types of system elements: slot-type  filters,  cartridge  filters,  micro-filters,  polymer filters,  backflushing  filters  or  strainers  and  separators. Regardless  of  whether  we  are  looking  at  purification, separation, protection, hazardous substances or enhanced safety – HETA can not only do it, they can also add value at the same time. After all, the best proof for the success of  a  filtration  and  separation  solution  are  the  benefits beyond those that are the purely functional: added value through  the  increased safety of  the workplace and site. Added  value  through  the  protection  of  the  environment and  conservation  of  resources.  And  of  course,  added value  in  an  economic  sense,  through  the  reduction  of costs and maximization of profits.

Easier  said  than  made  A characteristic of HETA work is that it tends to be complicated rather than simple, takes time rather than being quickly finished and assumes a high level of responsibility. Our products tend to be rather large and are seldom very small. The project planning lives from the close working relationship with our customers. The imple-mentation of these projects is often overshadowed by the tedious rituals of bureaucratic processes. In most cases, production levels reach batch sizes of one. And the operation of HETA plant and systems is accompanied by a continual state of service read-iness. In other words, it’s not that easy.

Triggered  by  customer  demand  In the age of outsourcing, you might ask why HETA is so committed to using their own production capabilities. The initial trigger came from outside: a HETA customer from Japan demanded that their order be completely designed and built by HETA. Otherwise no order! Their motivation: the fewer the number of stations needed to manufacture safety-relevant components, the better the results! That is why during the nineties, HETA invested heavily in developing their own production capabilities. At the same time combining the advantages for the customer with their own: After all, we know exactly what we do – safety through our own efforts.

Welding: the key disciplineIt’s not possible to filter or separate without using some form  of  vessel.  Something  that  has  to  be  extremely durable  both  physically  and  chemically,  to  withstand high-pressures,  extreme  temperatures  and  aggressive substances. And where vessels are being made, the edges of  sheets have  to be  smartly  transformed  to be at  one with  their neighbor. Something  that has  to be achieved so  perfectly  that  it  is  as  if  the  sheets  had  never  been separate entities! That  is why HETA uses a whole range of welding techniques. Carried out by skilled welders as well as welding machines. Checked by welding supervi-sors  working  according  to  DIN EN ISO 14731  standards. With state-of-the-art testing technology – from pressure tests at 1000 bar through to ultrasonic, X-ray and other NDT methods.

Bending and rolling, finishing  and supplyingEvery year, HETA  invests significant accounts of money in new plant and machinery. The construction of vessels is, for instance, greatly assisted by a metal plate bending and rolling machine. This bends and forms up to 25 mm thick stainless steel plates with the utmost precision. Or the  fully  automated  submerged  arc  welding  system  for producing  perfect  metre-long  welded  seams.  From  the bills of material through assembly to shipment, the per-formance of each working step at HETA is well aimed and controlled. Where necessary, even the made-to-measure transport crates are delivered by HETA and officially  in-spected and certified by accredited test institutions such as the TÜV. Everything is completely Made in Germany!

All part of the big picture  HETA primarily pro-duces integrated systems for the filtration of fluids and gases as well as for separation. And fundamen-tally, the engineering of plant and processes. The thorough analysis of each individual job is followed by total planning and production. To achieve this, all necessary components are, wherever possible, procured and produced from our own resources. PACO, a worldwide quality pacesetter, for metal wire cloths and filter elements goes hand in hand as one of the leading suppliers. Not forgetting the PACO R&D and HETA planners with their extensive process knowledge and scientific links, who are al-ways willing to provide the needed assistance. Long-term serviceRegardless of the field, cleaning processes for fluids and gases  require  constant,  fail-safe  efficiency  –  on  a  long term. That is why the HETA service spectrum starts with the  installation  and  commissioning  of  the  filtration  and separation  system.  If  required,  followed  by  profession-al service and repairs to ensure the long-term operation of the system. This not only includes operational checks and  maintenance.  But  also  the  exchange  of  used  filter baskets,  filter  candles  and  all  required  spare  parts  to maintain the quality of the system. An additional advan-tage of HETA service is that the potential for  increasing productivity  keeps  pace  with  advantages  in  application experience and technology for continuous process opti-mization.

First Lich and then the worldFor companies the size of HETA it requires considerable commitment and effort to be present in their various mar-kets on a global scale: but for the process engineers from Lich in central Germany, this is simply a matter of course. Being part of the PACO Group means that common struc-tures and networks can be used to advantage to ensure close proximity to the customers and local presence – all around  the  world.  This  means  that  it  is  completely  nor-mal for a Chinese customer, to have the planning and im-plementation of their pipeline filtration system for Sudan carried out in the HETA and PACO engineering offices and production facilities in Lich and Steinau in central Germa-ny. It’s a small world!
