Diversity and Multiculturalism Focus Group Questions

1 What does diversity mean to you and why might awareness of it prove important to your future?

2 List three of your top hopes and dreams for your future.

3 What do you value most? What does your family value most?

4 What is something most people would not guess about you– just from looking at you?

5 What are your experiences with cultural stereotypes (those you’ve held and those held about you or your cultural group)?

6 What three things are valued most by: Your neighborhood? Your generation?

7 How do you define family?

8 What is considered the most disrespectful thing within your culture? (Optional: Family? Neighborhood?)

9 Is there something done within your family or neighborhood that “outsiders” find hard to understand?

10 Who makes important decisions within your family? (Optional: Neighborhood?)

What did our students tell us?What does diversity mean to you and why might awareness of it prove important to your future?

1 Diversity is a variety of different races and personalities. If you're aware of it, you may find people who can really benefit your life.

2 Diversity to me means different cultures

3 Diversity is just a mixture of things, like race, culture, gender

4 Diversity means different types of things

Diversity means to me people of different sets and background then what you had/used to growing up. If your aware diversity is always going to be around. Is to not be unopen-mided to a person of a different background and culture

6 Nothing much, I try to ignore everything with music

7 Diversity means that you can be in a group with people that are not from where I am from

8 Diversity is the mix of culture, religion and ethnicities in society and of people

9 Diversity means a community of different cultures, races, religion and people

10 Diversity means many different races and religions. It might prove importance in my future because its going to be a big part of my life

11 Diversity means a group of people working together from different race, culture and place

12 Diversity means from all over the world

13 Diversity means different and more than one of the same thing

14 I think diversity means the language, foods and other resources of a culture

15 Diversity is everything, food, music, heritage, everything

16 Diversity means more than one country speaking in different languages and different way of life. It is important to learn about new cultures

17 It may help me and others come together and become greater in life

18 When I go to college I want my school to be very diverse because I want my college experience to be exciting and fun!

1 All black kids are disrespectful, older people treat me that way sometimes

2 Black American males are criminals

3 Being told that all white people are smart - other feel like I'm smart because I'm African. Told that most white people do not like the black race just because they trying to do better.

4 I just think people different in their own way

5 That all white people don't get ???? (can't make out what the student wrote) What’s hard about stereotypes on me is black people can never get along

6 My friends told me I am not black because I do not like hot sauce or watermelon

7 Black American are not that bad as when they talked about them on the news. Everyone is different and think differently

8 Light skins boys are soft. All Asians are smart, Black People are stupid

9 All Asians were geniuses - All Spanish people are rude - All blacks are ghetto

10 As a child I always thought that adults were so uptight and stay to themselves

11 Asian people are smart - Mexican people are cheap

12 Walking inside an expensive store and being stared at by a Caucasian or Asian

13 Walking into a store and having a white person following me - Black peoples all play basketball

16 Why do I talk so weird - Why I eat certain things - I thought all Chinese people were smart

17 Ghetto, Overly smart, dumb

18 Most white people see us black people as no good monkeys that they can control. They see us as dumb and we can't be big CEO's of Corporations, be President or running a franchise

How did “we” respond?

What were our questions?1. Jack Johnson: The native Texan nicknamed the Galveston Giant went on to be the first black

world heavyweight boxing champion. Hounded constantly by Jim Crow and the racism of that time, for more than thirteen years, he was considered the most famous and the most notorious African-American on Earth".

1. Sammy Lee: The equivalent to Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, a year after earning his medical degree, he became the first Asian American (Korean) to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States and the first man to win back-to-back gold medals in Olympic platform diving, finishing first on the 10-meter diving platform at the 1948 London Games and again at the 1952 Helsinki Games.

Question: Which Is the Language Most Spoken in Africa?

Answer: Arabic

Question: What country was that delicious “German Chocolate Cake” invented?

Answer: It was actually from New York, USA was named that because the guy who first made the dark, rich chocolate was Samuel German

Question: What country did “General Tao’s Chicken” come from?

Answer: New York, U.S.A.

What did we find?

Our students are highly motivated – bright – articulate - and full of surprises!

What did we learn from our students?

Our students have a burning desire to learn….

And to WIN!

With vision and direction…Everything is possible
