WASTE & RECYCLING COSTS

Recycling is better for the environment

Recycling is better for people

Recycling is better for the economy

Recycling 75% of waste across the nation would reduce emissions by 276 million metric tons, which is the same as eliminating emissions from 72 coal-fired power plants or taking 50 million cars off the road.

If you’ve used it up, you can toss it in. Empty containers arerecyclable even if they aren’t perfectly clean. However, if more than 5%

of the recycling contains contaminants such as food, liquid, Styrofoam, and other non-recyclable materials, then it will be sent to the landfill.

Removing recycling from campus costs approximately 40% less than removing trash. A missed opportunity to recycle is like throwing money into a landfill.

Since SLU has introduced single-stream recycling, waste collec-tion costs have been lowered by 16%, saving tens of thousands of dollars annually. Increases are due to campus growth.

By 2030, recycling is estimated to add 1.5 million jobs to the American economy
