From the SportS DeSk By Chad Courrier

Long winter ends with state champions, optimism for the future and the end of careers

The wild, crazy month of March and state tournaments has turned to April and anticipation

for the outdoor sports, yet this is a good time to reflect on the cold winter months, which were warmed by the performances of special high-school teams and athletes in southern Minnesota.

When Minnie Frederick arrived at Mankato East in 2010, the girls basketball program was a mess, having posted only 22 victories in the previous four seasons. But the bubbly, energetic point guard, along with emerging young talent in the program, allowed the Cougars to win two Big Nine C o n f e r e n c e championsh ips and reach the s e c t i o n championship game the last two seasons. Frederick’s style will have a lasting effect on the program, which has transformed from a half-court offense to a full-court, pressure style.

East/Loyola hockey star Savannah Quandt was a key player in the Cougars’ most successful season, and she has fulfilled a dream of signing with her hometown Minnesota State University to continue her hockey career. By the time she is done playing, she will have called All Seasons Arena her hockey home for a full decade.

Each year since 1960, Maple River and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, in some form of the various communities, have gotten together for an important boys basketball game, with the winner getting to hold onto the Brown Jug. This trophy game began as a source of joy for the winning school, and 54 years later, it holds the same intensity today.

Carlie Wagner of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva had her

coming out party last spring when she set state-tournament scoring records and helped her team finish third in Class AA. This season, the junior point guard was even more dominant as the Panthers returned to the state tournament, where she broke her own scoring records and led the Panthers to a state championship. In January, she announced that she will attend the University of Minnesota, verbally committing to a scholarship that she’ll

officially accept in the fall.

The Mankato Loyola girls returned to the state tournament after a 31-year break, and even though the Crusaders lost their quarterfinal game, a young roster bodes well for the future of the program. Given that the bulk of the team will return next

season, another state-tournament appearance would seem possible.

Six local wrestlers claimed state championships, and several others brought home state medals. It was another action-packed, frenzied three days of wrestling at Xcel Energy Center.

It’s nearly impossible to capture all of the accomplishments of local teams and athletes who have excelled at their craft and entertained the crowds all winter. But the vast number of memories and highlights prove how lucky we are to witness this action.

Hopefully, you’ll enjoy this second installment of Final Buzzer, as captured by our words, our designs and Pat Christman’s camera. The athletes did the work; you get the reward.

When her career finally ends, S a v a n n a h Quandt might be the hockey

player who has played more games in All Seasons Arena than any one else in Mankato.

Quandt just wrapped up her sixth and final varsity sea-son with the Mankato East/Loyola girls team. Up next, a chance to play for Minnesota State University, which cur-rently uses the same rink for practices and games.

“I like playing there,” Quandt said. “I practically live there in the winter.”

Since before she started skating for the Cougars as a seventh-grader, Quandt want-ed to play for the Mavericks. And that dream didn’t change as she started her outstanding high school career. Following her sophomore season, she verbally com-mitted to Minnesota State, announcing to suitors from other college programs that they can stop recruiting her because she would be staying home come 2013.

“I grew up watching them,” she said. “All the girls in the Cities watch the Gophers, and they’re their idols. But I grew up watching the Mavericks.

I’m really excited about next year. I want it to come right now.”

Quandt was a high-scoring forward for the first part of her career, but moved to defense — the position she’ll likely play at MSU, according to Mavericks coach Eric Means — the last two seasons.

As a senior, she helped lead the Cougars to their best-ever finish. East/Loyola went 22-6-0 before suffering a heart-breaking defeat in the Section 2A championship game

against Mound-Westonka. Even with the disap-pointment of not

reaching the state tourna-

ment, that was a long way from Quandt’s first two of years of high school hockey when East/Loyola won a total of just seven games.

Quandt broke her right wrist in the final game of the regular season this year and had to play with a restrictive cast in the playoffs.

“I definitely would have been able to shoot a lot bet-ter,” she said of the injury. “Oh well. I tried my best, I guess.”

Now, Quandt is hoping she can assist in the improvement of another team — a tougher task at the Division I college level.

“I definitely want to be a helper in the turnaround of the program,” she said. “That would be awesome.”

summer before her sophomore season at Mankato East, she went to an open gym to play basketball with and meet some of her new teammates.

Her older brother Stephone, Jr., had played at East, and her cousin Martin Frederick knew many of the girls in the basketball program. But it was still a little nerve-racking for the new girl, hoping to break in with a group of players who had played a lot of basketball growing up together.

“I was kind of a shy girl,” Frederick said. “So I went to open gym in the summer. I think they thought I was going to be a fat, chubby kid with no basketball experience, maybe with an attitude problem.

“When I got there, they looked kind of surprised. Once I talked with them, and they got to know me, we all became very close.”

Frederick finished an impressive three-year career at East last month, setting school records and helping her team return to the program to the success it had during the 1980s and ’90s. She was a finalist for

Minnie Frederick was a tenacious defender, shown here battling Mankato West’s Cara Christiansen for a loose ball during a game this season.

hen Minnie Frederick first moved to Mankato in the

summer before her sophomore season at Mankato East, she went to an open gym to play basketball with and meet some of her new teammates.

She was a finalist for

the state’s Miss Basketball award, leading the Cougars to a pair of Big Nine Conference championships.

More than the awards, however, Frederick has helped to transform the program from a slow, halfcourt style to an up-tempo, fun brand of basketball.

“At our first practice, you could see what Minnie could do for our team,” East coach Mike Barger said. “She fit in right away. She was kind of a jokester, and she has a personality that draws you in.”

Frederick grew up in Flint, Mich., and it wasn’t until her parents divorced that she considered spending her high-school years anywhere else.

Her dad, Stephone, Sr., moved to Mankato, but she stayed in Michigan with her mother, Marjai, until after her freshman season.

“When my brother was here, he told me that he had a lot of fun,” Frederick said.

Four years ago, the Cougars didn’t have many ball-handlers, so opponents would press a lot. When East got into the halfcourt, the possessions were focused on getting the ball into the post, hoping 50 points would be enough to win the game.

This season, the Cougars averaged 62.8 points, about 20 more per game, in large part because of Frederick’s ability to push the ball up the court, resulting in a layup for her or a pass to an open teammate, maybe a 3-pointer or a post basket.

“One of the things we always talk about is you better be ready for a pass,” said junior post Claire Ziegler, a 1,000-point scorer who has benefited from a lot of Frederick’s assists. “She knows you’re going to be open before you know you’re open.”

Frederick was more of a scorer as a sophomore, but as

she’s learned to trust her teammates, she’s been more willing to pass. This season, Frederick averaged 11.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 9.8 assists, struggling with an ankle injury early in the season and another one in the final two weeks. She had 139 steals.

As a junior, Frederick set a school record with 17 assists in a game, but this season, she dazzled the Austin defense with 18 assists.

“She’s a true point guard,” Barger said. “She’s passed up a lot of shots to get other people involved. She’s grown into a leader, on and off the court.”

Frederick ended her career with 772 assists, fourth most in state history, and bested the school record by 246 assists — a number that may never again be challenged. She had

Frederick ended her career with 772 assists, fourth most in state history, and bested the school record by 246 assists — a number that may never again be challenged. She had

three of the top eight single-season totals in state history.

She’s also scored 1,036 points, which ranks 12th at Mankato East.

“The only regret I have is that I tried to make that layup (on the final shot of the section championship game) instead of passing to Abby (Connell) to shoot the 3,” Frederick said.

Frederick will be returning to Michigan for her college career, signing with Division I Detroit Mercy, but she’s had a lasting effect on the program, which no longer will play a slow-down, halfcourt style. She hopes to study child development because she enjoys watching kids take some information and grow in their skills and confidence.

That started this season as the younger point guards

watched Frederick to get some tips on the position.

“I love it that some girls looked up to me,” she said. “That means I’m doing something right, and I want to help them. It’s a nice way to give back to the program.

“Every single person at East has played an important part in my high-school career, from my teammates to the teachers and coaches. They’ve all helped me through the tough times.”

Barger appreciates what Frederick has meant to his program, both on the court and as a mentor for the future point guards. If Frederick had never shown up here, it’s impossible to say how much success the Cougars would have achieved in the last three seasons.

“I know we wouldn’t be scoring 60 points a game

without Minnie,” Barger said. “It’s a style that kids love to play, and I think we have some athletic kids in the program. The younger kids have been able to watch how Minnie does things, and that’s the way they’ll play.”

Frederick wasn’t sure she’d fit in with the other basketball players at Mankato east, but her outgoing, bubbly personality allowed her to make friends fast.

Back in 1960, Garden City High School played Amboy High School in a boys basketball game, and the Brown Jug became the trophy for the series. Garden City won that first game 66-49, setting in motion an annual game that still keeps the interest of those communities today.

In 1969, Vernon Center, Rapidan and Garden City consolidated into Wellcome Memorial, and Amboy and Good Thunder were joined as the series continued.

By 1987, Mapleton-Amboy-Good Thunder was playing against Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, and two years later, MAGT became Maple River.

In its current format of Maple River vs. Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, Maple River has had ownership of that treasured piece of ceramic after 19 of 24 seasons.

The Knights claimed the Jug last season, ending a six-year losing streak and providing a lot of motivation

for the Maple River players to gain back the trophy for its showcase at the Mapleton school.

It was a loud, large crowd that filled the gym in Lake Crystal on Jan. 18, split pretty evenly to root for their r e s p e c t i v e teams. The Eagles used a 19-6 run late in the first half to lead by 11 at ha l f t ime. The game rema ined close until the last four minutes, when Maple River finished on a 13-1 run for a 69-49 victory.

Jaron Denn was Maple River’s top scorer with 19 points, and he added 10 rebounds. Ben

Larson scored 13 points. For LCWM, Michael Coates scored 17 points,

and Bryson Yackel had 14 points.

“Sometimes, you get spoiled when you have (the Jug) six

years in a row,” said Maple River coach

Chad Ostermann, who played

in the

Jug series for Maple River. “When you lose it, you want it back.”

The Jug series will face a challenge in the future. Maple River is leaving the Valley Conference and will compete in the Gopher Conference, meaning these teams can face each other only when the nonconference schedule allows.

Over the years, however, the series has thrived, despite the challenges.

The Crusaders lost to Win-E-Mac in the state quarterfi-nals at Williams Arena, but with only three seniors on the roster, it seems likely that Loyola will have several chances to return to state competition in the near future.

The season began with a win. Then there was another and another and another until 10 in a row were rattled off by the Mankato East/Loyola girls hockey team.

For coach Nate Fuller and several of the Cougars’ players, they could recall entire years that didn’t end with double-digit wins. They remember four- and three- and nine-win seasons before they began to figure things out, before they turned things around, before they learned how to win.

The Cougars didn’t reach their ultimate goal of getting to the state tournament this past year. They ended the year with their first Big Nine champion-ship and a team-record 22 wins

(they finished 22-6-0) before losing to Mound Westonka/Watertown-Mayer 3-2 in the Section 2A championship game.

Three seniors were on that four-win team as seventh-grad-ers. Four more from that class joined up the following year when East/Loyola won just three games.

“To go through all those years and get better working together, it’s amazing what we’ve done,” leading scorer Maddie McCargar said after her final high school hockey game. “Twenty-two wins is not something to be ashamed of. Twenty-three is what we want-ed. We worked our hearts out.”

Forwards McCargar and

Rebekah Kolstad finished the season, including playoffs, with 55 points apiece. Kolstad, a sopho-more, scored 30 goals, while McCargar, a senior, had 29 goals. Senior defenseman Savannah Quandt had 17 goals and 37 points and was named third-team All-State by The Associated Press.

In 28 games, the Cougars more than dou-bled up their opponents’ goals, out-scoring them 135-66.

That’s a far, far cry from five seasons ago.

Mankato East/Loyola goaltender Katie Paulson was the backstop in one of the most successful seasons in program history. Below, Katy Snyder celebrates another victory for the Cougars.
