The Panther Junior Football and Cheerleading Association will have to cut back on purchasing new equipment after over $100,000 was stolen from the youth organization recently.

Last week the Downers Grove Police arrested the Panther’s former treasurer Theresa A. Carlquist, 51, for allegedly embezzling over $100,000 from the youth organization, according to Dave Bormann, a Downers Grove police spokesman.

Police said Carlquist used her position as the Treasurer to steal over $100,000 from the organization between February 2008 and December 2009. Additionally, there is

documentation that Carlquist had written numerous checks to herself from the Panther’s checking account for amounts up to $8,500.

Carlquist turned herself in to the police department last week and was charged with six counts of felony theft, according to Bormann.

Association president Steve Lowery said last year that the organization’s board saw consistent discrepancies in the organization’s financial reports and began to question what was happening.

“Every month we’d get our financial reports and there were questions about it, and that’s when [the board members] went to the police,” said Lowery.

Once Carlquist was suspected

of taking the money, she was immediately removed from her position as treasurer.

As a result of the financial gap the organization, which creates recreational sports activities for about 300 local families, will have to cut back and reuse its current equipment while at the same time step up its fundraising efforts, said Lowery.

Typically the organization would buy new equipment and donate some of its used material to children in some of Chicago’s inner city programs.

“We can’t cut corners on safety equipment like helmets, but we had to cut back on things like practice pads,” said Lowery.

The organization will be holding a special fundraiser at

St. Mary’s Church, in Downers Grove on October 9, and will be actively selling its spirit wear in an attempt to recover some of the lost revenue.

The football association has used the company’s website to inform the public and parents about the pending investigation. While some parents have expressed their disappointment with the situation, the majority has supported the league.

“Some have [threatened to take their children out of the program], but the majority have been very supportive. Our overwhelming retention rate has been consistent,” said Lowery.

It was not clear whether Carlquist had children actively involved in the league, though

Lowery said that he believes at one time she did have a child participating in the program.

The Panthers elected a new board of directors in January 2010. The new board has added additional safeguards to protect the group’s finances; however, Lowery refused to comment on the nature of those safeguards.

The youth football association, which holds most of its recreational games at Doerhoefer Park, on Main Street and Ogden Avenue, is staffed completely by volunteers and board members.

Carlquist, who was unavailable for comment, was released from custody after posting $5,000 bond. Her court appearance is scheduled for Sept. [email protected]

You can find some extraordinary things at a garage sale — even hope and inspiration.

That’s what Seanine Bowman found when she began holding a garage sale in honor of her son Jeremy “Bear” Stella who committed suicide two years ago. This is the second year for the annual Bear’s Most Excellent Garage Sale, which raises money to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Bowman said that after her son’s death she was emotionally paralyzed before she decided to get involved in the issue of suicide prevention. During her first garage sale the outpouring of support from the community surprised her.

“We got so many people who had lost somebody to suicide. It was so inspiring. People were coming up to me saying ‘who is the mother?’ and hugging me. It

was so emotional,” said Bowman, who has three other children.

“I was so unprepared to give support and counseling as I am grieving myself, but I did find a lot of comfort in sharing stories with other people that came to our sale,” she said.

Bowman found visitors who attended last year’s garage sale both generous and supportive. There were visitors who bought

items, then returned with personal items from their homes to donate to the garage sale. The event will be held at the Bowman’s home, combined with her next-door neighbor’s house.

In many suicide cases parents and spouses blame themselves, an issue that Bowman’s learning to surrender. Parents should look for signs and be vigilant in taking action, which could

include therapy and medication for a person suffering with depression. Often people take medication without dealing with their core issues in therapy, she said. Signs of depression can include shutting down or cutting oneself for attention.

“Teens do things for attention. If they’re asking or looking for attention, they obviously need it,” she said.

At the time of his death Jeremy was working and living in Canada. He died just before his 22nd birthday. His mother said that he had struggled with depression for some time, and that when he was younger he was receptive to help, but as he got older he became resistant to intervention.

“We aren’t able to help Jeremy anymore, but we are able to help others with depression and thoughts of suicide,” said Bowman.

Bowman’s garage sale coincides with the Out of the Darkness Walk, a national event

that involves a 3-5 mile walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

This fall, walks are scheduled to take place in about 200 communities across the country. The local walk will be held at the Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe on September 25. Bowman’s group, called the “Bear’s Den” team will be walking in the local event in honor of her son. Last year the team raised $9,500, with about $3,000 of its funds made from the “Bear” garage sale.

In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 16 minutes, claiming more than 33,000 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute with close to one million people attempting suicide annually.

The “Bear” garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept 9 through 11 at the Bowman home, located at 6937 Martin Drive, in Woodridge. For information about the Out of the Darkness Walk, call (630) 515-1325.

Illustrated Opinion

“Don’t you have anything better to do!”

Letter to the EditorUnfortunately, we, in law

enforcement hear this all too often and ultimately, the answer is “NO”!

“Don’t you have anything better to do than stop me for speeding!” “NO, we don’t”! Speeding is one of the main factors in vehicle fatalities, as a third of all fatalities are related to speed.

“Don’t you have anything better to do than stop me for following too closely!” “NO, we don’t”! It takes almost the length of a football field to stop a car

traveling at 60 mph. Following too closely behind a car has been identified as one of the top five violations contributing to crashes and fatalities.

“Don’t you have anything better to do than stop me for not wearing a seatbelt!” “NO, we don’t”! In a crash, everything in the car becomes a potential weapon, nothing more so than an unrestrained body. So far this year in Illinois, more than 25% of the almost 500 fatalities involved people not wearing seatbelts. Those are not just numbers, but

the lives of mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers; lives that may have been saved if they had only been wearing their seatbelt.

“Don’t you have anything better to do than stop me for drinking and driving!” “NO, we don’t”! On average, someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes. In addition, intoxicated drivers are 11 times more likely to be involved in a crash, many of which involve death to another motorist.

“Don’t you have anything

better to do than stop me for texting while driving!” “NO, we don’t”! 78% of all crashes are caused by driver distraction and you are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash while texting. In addition, for every second you glance away from the road (changing the radio station, eating, dialing the cell phone), you travel 95 feet at 65 mph. That’s almost 100 feet of distracted driving for every second your eyes are off the road.

summer is almost over and kids are going back to school. Football games are starting and dances will soon follow. Families will

be hitting the road for last minute vacations and the Labor Day weekend is almost upon us. But be assured, our officers will be out there, day and night, risking their lives, to protect yours. And if the question comes up, “Don’t you have anything better to do”, the answer will always be “NO, keeping you safe is the most important thing we do”!

From your family at ISP District 5, have a nice Labor Day and stay safe.

You snooze, you lose. Your energy

levels will change for the better in the week ahead faster than you can say “Rip Van Winkle.” You might have a sage viewpoint that helps your mate handle joint asserts.

Your half-empty glass may get filled.

A minor downturn in your social life is reflected in your negativity. You will find that your optimism and love life improves greatly before the week is over.

Meet ‘em and greet ‘em. Your social life

might seem a lost cause today, but don’t worry because things will heat up in the week to come. Joining a book club or other group might change your luck.

The pressure is off. Because you feel less

anxiety, it is easier to dream about a more satisfying career or improved working conditions. Career, however, might take a back seat to family in the week ahead.

You could be starving for attention. The

best thing to do is to hook up with other people who want to enrich their lives through food for thought. Join groups involved in a common cause this week.

There is a time and a place for everything.

Finish off the weekend by getting your closets organized or the bills filed away. In the week ahead, you will have better things to do to fill up your time.

L o n g s h o t s aren’t as long as you think

they are. The ideas you have today might not seem viable, but later in the week you might receive an unexpected opportunity to change your life for the better.

It is not the time to pull the trigger if you

Fantasies are merely fiction. You might

Great risks can produce great rewards. You

Know your limits. If you are afraid of

the dark, be smart; plug in a night light and turn it on. You might feel slightly under the weather today but your energy levels will increase as the week moves on.

INSIDE: Downers Grove South football comes up short in 28-21 season-opening loss to Bolingbrook, page 12

By Matt Le CrenContributing writer

Downers Grove North’s football team suffered through the worst season in school history in 2009, so the Trojans want to rebound by being one of the most improved teams around this season.

They got off to a great start in Friday night’s season opener with Lockport when Frederick Palma scored on a 70-yard run on the game’s first play.

Though Palma and fellow running back Anthony Rada would each top 100 yards rushing, they proved to be no match for Lockport star Dan Holman, who carried 12 times for 288 yards and four touchdowns in the Porters’ 42-20 victory at Carstens Field in Downers Grove.

“Our offense was doing good the whole first quarter and the defense was holding up, had a good flow going,” Palma said. “And then the offense couldn’t keep us going. I think we just let our defense down and things just kind of broke down from there.”

Palma’s burst up the middle gave North (0-1) a 6-0 lead. But

just as they did last year after taking an early 12-0 lead before falling 49-18 to Lockport, the Trojans couldn’t sustain it. After forcing the Porters (1-0) to punt on their first three possessions, North dropped a punt snap, giving Lockport the ball at the 14-yard line.

Holman, who had started the game on the bench as punishment for missing a practice the previous Saturday, checked in and scored on the next play to give Lockport a 7-6 lead. The Porters would go on to score on four straight possession as well as their first two drives of the second half to extend the lead to 42-13.

Holman added touchdown runs of 49, 80 and 64 yards, with the 80-yarder being the most impressive. It appeared the Trojans had him bottled up near the line of scrimmage as he tried to go around left end, but he broke free and found the end zone with 4:27 left in the second quarter to give the visitors a 28-13 lead.

It was the second straight play the Porters had scored on. Billy Reed earlier had tossed a 62-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Golub when the Trojans bit on

Bolingbrook and Downers Grove South have had quite the recent history, battling twice last season.

The Raiders won the opener a year ago, but the Mustangs won when it counted, knocking Bolingbrook from the playoffs.

This season, it was the Mustangs, who on paper had the upper hand with several key players returning, while Bolingbrook had only two players returning with varsity experience.

In the end it was the young Raiders, behind sophomore quarterback Aaron Bailey, who won the game 28-21.

“We knew it would be a close game, I just didn’t think we would play as poorly as we did and make the type of mistakes we did,” South coach John Belskis said. “Their freshmen, sophomores and juniors outplayed our seniors. In the past, this is not how Downers South football has been played. We have to decide now what we are going to do and if this is going to continue or are we are going to become a better football team. We came in as one of the top ranked teams in the state. We had a chance to beat this team and we did everything we could to lose it.”

Bailey, a dual threat under center rushed the ball 18 times for 175 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown run. He completed

five of his five of his 10 passes for 62 and a touchdown, his first as a varsity quarterback.

Bailey’s 81-yard scoring run put Bolingbrook ahead 21-7 in the third quarter, but Downers South’s Ryan Oruche took the ensuing kickoff back 91 yards to nullify the score.

“We made far more mistakes than they did,” Belskis said. “Their young kids outplayed our seniors and if that continues it will be a long season. We practiced well, we had them ready to play. It is a shame. When you have a chance to beat a good team like this and you play so poorly, it makes it hard to sleep at night.”

Oruche would run in a one-yard score with 5:36 left in the third quarter to tie the game.

The Mustangs got an interception from Dan Leach, but the drive stalled and Mike Ficaro

missed a 30-yard field goal.“We were setting up for the

field goal and that would have been the first time we had pressure on them,” Belskis said. “It was the first time we could have made them play from behind and we didn’t convert.”

Bailey atoned for his mistake with a 42 yard run on the final play of the third quarter.

Joliet transfer Malik Snapp scored his first Bolingbrook touchdown on a cut-back run from 12 yards out with just less than eight minutes left in the contest to put the Raiders on top for good.

The Mustangs were led on the ground by Josh Williams, who carried the ball 22 times for 130 yards and a touchdown.

“We knew it would be tight and we still have to fight through situations like that,” Williams said. “We let ourselves get in a hole early when they went up first. We didn’t step up like we needed to. There were a few plays that did go well for us. The way we have our plays

set up and the way we practice, every play is a potential big play for us, we just have to execute.”

There were a few highlights for South, but they were blurred for Belskis by poor play.

“Ryan and Josh played well, our offensive line at times played well, but then we couldn’t protect our quarterback when he dropped back to pass and if you can’t do that, you are one dimensional,” Belskis said. “Defensively, we had a couple seniors give up big plays in the secondary. Junior (Leach) played well, he had a big interception. Our seniors didn’t perform the way we wanted. We told them they only get nine games and at 9:30 p.m. this one was over and how did they want it to be remembered. It is just unfortunate that this is how we remember it.”

South gets another home game next week when they face highly touted Glenbard West in a West Suburban crossover game on Friday night.

SOUTHContinued from page 13

a play-action fake. That came one play after Palma had pulled North within 14-13 on a one-yard scoring run.

“I think it was pretty much even on the lines,” Downers North coach John Wander said. “The

intangible was the Holman kid. Playing a kid like that, that was my fear. He’s a special player.”

The Trojans, who were 1-8 last fall, did have some bright spots, rushing for 270 yards. Palma carried 13 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns, while Rada added 113 yards on 11 carries, including gains of 29, 44 and 32 yards. But when the Porters did stop the run, the Trojans had

little success through the air. Junior Riley McGinnis, making his first varsity start, completed 4 of 16 passes for 60 yards, 29 of which came on a catch by Cody Pooler. Two of his throws were dropped.

“We have very high expectations going into this year,” Palma said. “Our motivation going into this year is so much higher because of last year, so we have a

lot to prove.“We’re going to watch film

[Saturday] and we’re going to find out our mistakes and work on that. I’m going to say we had a big improvement from last year. I know our team’s there.”

Wander thinks so, too, but said the defense must improve.

“I told our kids you’re never as good as you think you are, or as bad, and there were four

plays in that football game [that made a difference],” Wander said. “I thought we could score 28 points, but we can’t allow 42 and win football games. We’ve got some work to do, but I feel we’re going to be okay. The score didn’t indicate it, but I feel we’ll be okay.”

The Trojans travel this Friday to Willowbrook, which was North’s lone victim in 2009.

BUSINESS & REAL ESTATEMore mommy than manager

Q. I am a manager and I feel like more of a mommy. I am constantly nagging employees to do their job, and I’m exhausted. Is there a better way to motivate employees to do what I ask?

A. Yes, most managers think there are only two approaches to get employees to do what they want: Either ask “pretty please,” or scare employees into performing.

Both of these approaches have a big downside. If you only tell an employee what to do, you are asking “pretty please.” The employee has no incentive to do what you ask and it’s predictable you will end up ignored. Intimidating employees with fear tactics does work in the short run but in the long run your employees will become sneaky. People who are scared only act well when they are being observed.

Instead of these common but ineffective approaches, consider a new tactic. Anytime you want an employee to perform a task, ask yourself what the employee could get out of doing what you

ask. Make sure you consider the employee’s unique goals, p e r s o n a l i t y, and interests or you’ll be putting cheap unleaded in a car that takes diesel.

Also make sure you do not react as if your employees are out to get you or are purposely being insubordinate. The truth is that people will do (and only do) what they perceive to be in their best interests ... period. Wise managers accept this truth and work with the agenda of their employees to keep employees performing at a high level.

Now, I know some readers will write me and tell me that it just isn’t right that people in the workplace are so self-centered that they will ignore direct orders if they see no personal reason to comply. I agree that there are many features of reality in and out of the workplace that “just aren’t right.”

However, if you don’t make it clear what your employees have to gain by doing what you want (or lose by not), you will always feel more like a mommy than a manager.

There are many upsides of using the personal agendas of employees to create internal motivation for employees. You can stop spending hours a day reminding employees about tasks and maybe take a long lunch break. You can stop micromanaging employees because employees will be more creative in not just doing what you say but in obtaining the ultimate outcome you seek. Your employees will clearly understand that if you win, the employees win and morale will cease to be a topic on your weekly meeting.

No manager enters leadership looking forward to running a daycare for employees. If you want your employees to act like grown-ups, provide the right

incentive and sit back and enjoy the results!

The last word(s)Q. In an upcoming exit

interview, my company my company will ask how effective my boss is at managing his employees. I’d like to respond that he is “great at motivating people to quit and find new employment.” Is this a good idea?

A. Not unless you plan on never needing a reference from your current boss.

Dear Dave,When is it

okay to buy toys for the lake—things like boats and jet skis—when following your plan?

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,I’m a lake guy, too. So, you’ve

hit a soft spot with me on this question. Still, you have to be an adult about these things, and here are a few rules.

First, you should be completely debt free except for your house. Second, you need to have your fully funded emergency fund—that’s three to six months of living expenses—in place. In other words, I want you to have completed the first three Baby Steps. And remember, no matter how shiny and cool it may look, buying a Sea-Doo is not an emergency! Save up and pay cash for your toys.

Remember this rule of thumb when it comes to toys. With the rare exception of collectibles, anything with an engine goes down in value. You should never have more than half of your annual income tied up in the total of all your vehicles. It would be pretty stupid to make $60,000 a year and have $40,000 tied up in cars, boats and other toys. That’s way too much money tied up in things that go down in value the wrong way. Always make sure your family is well taken care of before you go out buying toys!

THE BUGLE SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 23

By Debbie Lively Staff reporter

This month the Downers Grove Public Library will continue its Sunday afternoon concert series.

The concert season will begin on Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. with Arianna, a classical ensemble that includes flute, violin, harp and bass players. The ensemble is expected to perform both classical and popular music.

The popular concert series, which is held one Sunday each month beginning in September and running through April, gives the public an opportunity to

hear a variety of different music genres. The musical acts vary from classical to Latin jazz.

“It’s a chance to sample difference types of music,” said Carol Kania, a spokeswoman for the library.

Some of this season’s performers are returning to the library and several of them are even national entertainment acts such as Hungrytown, who comes from Vermont and Peter Fletcher from New York.

The library, located at 1050 Curtiss St. in Downers Grove, started the music series 10 years ago.

“What’s unusual is that we’ve

done this for so long,” said Kania. “Downers Grove is a music loving town. It’s a place where there are a lot of people who participate in music. The patrons really, really enjoy the music.”

“There are a lot of older people, because they often don’t go out at night. And there are kids who come out as well,” said Kania “It’s a chance for them to see musicians play up close.”

Generally about 75 patrons attend the concerts. The series is free, but registration is required. For more information, please call 630-960-1200 or sign up online

at www.downersgrovelibrary.org.
