MY VISUALIZATIONOF GREAT

HEALTHCARE CENTERS

Dear friends, I visualize a great healthcare center with the following characteristics: 1. Patient is the most important person in the hospital.

When the patient enters, the hospital presents an

angelic look and all the team members of the hospital

always wear smiles. The patient feels that “I am going

to get cured”.

2. The hospital consumes less electricity and less water by

adopting green building for all modernization tasks.

The choice of the power source is solar and wind.

3. The hospital premises are totally noise free.

4. All the test reports and treatment schedule get

attached to the data base of the patient through

Electronic Medical Record without the need of the

patient or the relatives to search for the reports. The

data-base is updated and authenticated every hour.

5. Maintains the database of all the cases treated by the

hospital in the past which are easily retrievable.

6. Patient is not subjected to diagnostic pain.

7. The surroundings of the hospital is green with full of

trees with seasonal flowers.

8. Further expansion of the hospital is in vertical mode

leading to fast movement of the patient and doctors

for medical treatment.

9. There is no case of hospital induced infection to the

patients due to bio-contamination.

10.The patients feel that this is the best place to get

treated.

11.The hospital is fully IT enabled leading to virtual

connectivity of the patient to the doctor, nurse and

the chief of the hospital 24x7. Hospital is also

networked with other hospitals nationally and

internationally for seeking expert medical advice on

unique cases.

12.The daily medical conference, attended by the Chief

of the hospital, doctors, nurses, paramedics, and

relatives of patients of unique cases, reviews

problems of the patient and find integrated solutions.

JUNE - JULY 2010

There was a meeting of cured patients, their doctors and a few social workers in a

hospital. One important point emerged during the interaction was, that the

relationship between the patient, doctor, nurses and paramedics extends to

patients’ family. This in turn, transmits effective messages from one family to

another family on advice to prevent diseases, necessity of periodic checks, the

dietary habits and the need for life style changes including exercise for good health.

Actually, I believe this good contact between the doctor, nurses, paramedics and

patients is very valuable. I request every one of you to become a teacher for the

families of patients. For reaching the unreached in distant villages in this region –

I would suggest creation of tele-medicine facility through satellite connectivity by the

Vaatsalya Hospital.

OATH FOR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS1. I love my medical profession a noble mission.

2. I will follow the motto “Let my care, remove the pain and bring

smiles”.

3. I will always radiate cheer to give confidence to patients and

their families.

4. I will be a life long learner, I will practice what I learn and I will

train my team to be competent.

5. I will deliver quality care with high standards irrespective of

whom I am treating.

6. I will not introduce any diagnostic pain.

7. If any patient is unhappy with my treatment, I will find out the

causes and treat the patient with utmost care, free of cost.

8. I will work with integrity and succeed with integrity.

In today’s marketplace, healthcare is about more than

just good outcomes. It’s about the patient experience.

And if patients do not get an experience that satisfies,

they will look elsewhere. The healthcare market has

become fiercely competitive, with hospitals battling for

the patient’s attention while they work simultaneously

to operate profitably and provide the best possible

patient care.

Vaatsalya, was started with a sole objective of making

quality healthcare available and reachable where it is

required the most – in the smaller cities and towns of

India. What started as a lofty dream today has taken

shape of a very tangible reality. At Vaatsalya we

recognise that a satisfied Patientis probably the best

brand ambassador. Therefore being attuned to the

patients’ needs and providing them with best possible

care occupies the priority position in all our activities.

Addressing the patients’ apprehensions and gaining

their confidence, so that they keep coming back for

any healthcare need of their family has become a

unanimous goal. Achieving this goal in the long-run,

however, requires ongoing "behind-the-scenes"

attention to patient needs and preferences, competitive

healthcare offerings, the development of differentiating

services, physician relationship building and more.

Each Vaatsalya hospital epitomizes the Vaatsalya way

of life, which emphasizes three basic tenets – of quality,

affordability and honesty in all our dealings. The smiles

of our patients stand testimony to our operating principle.

When it comes to healthcare business development,

Vaatsalya has a proven track record. Working in close

collaboration with hospitals and healthcare providers

“Hospital marketing is a

focused activity that

involves connecting

patients, physicians, and

ask, "How can you 'market' a hospital?" But marketing a

hospital is no different than "marketing" any other

VAATSALYA TIMES SPOT LIGHT

around the country, we have created and implemented

strategies that are flexible, cost-effective and deliver

measurable results. Of course, healthcare is about

healing. But healthcare is also a very complicated and

competitive business, built on the foundation of a good

service mix, supported by continuous attention to the

delivery of a patient experience that is extraordinary

and also by effective marketing.

Agility is an important attribute for any hospital. But

agility is absolutely critical for a fast growing healthcare

network, where mergers seem to happen overnight and

the balance of power among competing hospitals is

constantly shifting. A healthcare network has to be able

to quickly switch gears in such an ever-changing

market. In this market scenario, we at Vaatsalya, aim to

be a strong and one-of-its-kind of hospital network

comprising of 100 hospitals by the year 2015.

As Vaatsalya Hospital opens its very first hospital in the

state of Andhra Pradesh at Vizianagaram, we are

assaulted by a plethora of emotions which range from

admiration to a strong sense of fulfilment. Because our

Journey which begun in 2004 is dotted with a number

of anecdotal moments, which have challenged and

cajoled us to perfect the art of providing quality yet

affordable healthcare to the masses.

As we smile and reminisce on our entry into Andhra

Pradesh, we are awakened to the fact that we are now

in a State which will chisel us further to perfection, and

take Vaatsalya to greater heights of achievements, as

we expand to other parts of the country.

Healthcare is a promise,That patients will be well cared for...

That they will be attended to by skilled practitioners...

That they will have easy access to services that empower them...

That they will have interactions at every touch point that make them feel confident, comforted

and respected.

VAATSALYA TIMES

If you had visited Vaatsalya’s head office in Bangalore in the

past six months you might have seen a European lady busily

working like everybody else on her computer. She is Irena

Radeva, a business student at University of Copenhagen,

Denmark. Irena is not from Denmark but from the beautiful

Bulgaria, which is known for its roses and rose oil (attar).

Irena is pursuing her M.Sc. with a major in Business

Administration and Economics. She has previously worked

with Red Cross , Denmark and the World Health

Organization. She came to do an internship through an

international organization called “Artemisia” which finds

internships for students interested in Sustainable Business

Development. At Vaatsalya, she worked with Dr. V.

Renganathan, VP, Alliance, in further developing Dr.

Renganathan’s idea for a health microinsurance plan,

called “Vaatsalya Health Insurance Plan”. Renganathan

says “Irena helped getting very good journal articles through

University of Copenhagen’s online library, which helped us

educate ourselves about health microinsurance”. Here is

an excerpt of an interview of Irena with Manasi.

Why did you choose Vaatsalya for Internship?

“My belief that personal achievement does not simply come

with financial profit but rather it is the combination of profit

with creating social value that brought me to Vaatsalya. I

learnt about Vaatsalya in the Social Business database of

Artemisia and was inspired by the local and international

attention it gets for driving social change within the Indian

health system”, says Irena.

Give us a brief description about your project.

In India, only a limited amount of health insurance is

available, which mostly covers in-patient (IP) expenses only

and is largely inaccessible to low-income families. Also the

most common illnesses in the low-income group are due to

malnutrition, water contamination, and lack of sanitation

which can be treated in an out-patient (OP) setting. With this

in mind VHIP is designed to have outpatient coverage for

doctor consultation, medicines and diagnostics and

in-patient (hospitalization) coverage as well.

The low incomes and imperfect tax instruments in India

mean that public resources are unable to satisfy the needs of

the citizens. VHIP

has the advantage

of being able to

provide coverage

despite India’s

i n s t i t u t i o n a l

w e a k n e s s e s .

W i d e s p r e a d

availability of health

insurance would help

both drive demand

for services and provide additional revenue to improve the

overall quality of care. Health insurance like VHIP can help

expand India’s options to cover health care costs and lay the

foundation for further development towards universal

coverage.

As an Artemisia Fellow what else you were required to do?

I network with other trainees and entrepreneurs across

different businesses in India that are connected by the spirit

of social value and present Vaatsalya to social entrepreneurs

as a global example for innovation in health care.

Vaatsalya has been discussed in networking events in

Mumbai, India and Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Did you get a chance to explore India and how have you been able to adjust to Vaatsalya and the Indian culture?

My experience in Vaatsalya is well balanced with learning

more about India and Indian culture. I get to travel in all

parts of this incredible country and everywhere I go I see

breath-taking landscape and I meet the nicest people. India

has puzzled everyone and admittedly the country’s magic

works on me as well. I have learned to never ask “why” and

to trust that the flow of events will always lead to something

good. It can be frustrating at times when Western ways do

not work in Indian reality but it is also an eye-opening

challenge that makes me think out of the box in every action

I take, even the basics like taking a train or going to the

supermarket. I will go back to Europe inspired by the

Vaatsalya’s spirit and taking a small piece of India home

with me.

Uniform means a set of standard clothing

worn by members of an organization. These

help us, stand out in a crowd so that we are

easily recognized and also distinguished with

the service we impart. These uniforms not

only make us feel proud but also depict

organisation culture and values. Service

industry, particularly healthcare are more

united and eager to serve the customers,

when the workforce is wearing a pleasant

uniform the customers approach them more

confidently.

If the work force wears the same clothes to the

work place then they share a feeling of

commonness and belonging, which other

wise gets very difficult to achieve. Uniform

brings every one to the same platform, no

matter how rich or poor he or she is and thus

inculcating a feeling of equality amongst

those wearing the uniform.

A nurse provides emotional and physical care to the sick and disabled, and they enter our life from the moment we are born to the very last moment of most of our lives. Nursing is a profession which requires real commitment and selfless hard work. This profession also requires a lot of love, passion and perseverance than most other jobs do. Every year May 12th is observed as the International Nurses Day to honor the commitment and self less hard work of the nursing community.

Origin:Dorothy Sutherland, an official in the U. S Department of Health, Education and Welfare was the first to propose to proclaim the day in 1953 to observe the valuable contributions of the nurses. But, it was only in the year 1965 that the Nurses day started to be celebrated by the International Council of Nurses (ICN). On January 1974 it was decided to celebrate May 12th, Florence Nightingales birthday as the day to honor the nurses and May 9 to 15 was decided to be observed as the Nurses' Week. This day was chosen so as to remember the contribution she did to mankind during the World War II which reduced the death rate of wounded soldiers. The Lady with the Lamp as

NURSES DAY CELEBRATED @ VAATSALYAF l o r e n c e Nightingale is called is rightfully designated as the founder of modern nursing. The job of nurses involves a lot of patience and tolerance as they have to deal with a number of diseases and different patients on every day. They are also required to see to the patient's health day and night, monitoring their progress and recovery. The nurse also helps to maintain the emotional well being of the patient by taking care of them with respect and care. Everyone knows nurses are the face of a hospital and Vaatsalya is no exception and on behalf of everyone at Vaatsalya a big Thank you to you and may you continue to serve patients at Vaatsalya with high level of dedication / commitment.

“I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results.”

Warm Wishes to all the nurses at Vaatsalya and I hope all of you

will excel in this noble profession. With you as the backbone of

Vaatsalya, we aspire to excel in the healthcare delivery and

Hubli: “Work with integrity and succeed.” That was what the former

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had to say to doctors at an interaction

here on Sunday.

Participating in the inauguration of Vatsalya Hospital in Hubli and an

interaction with medical professionals, the former President said that

doctors should inculcate six virtues — generosity, ethics, tolerance,

perseverance, concentration and knowledge — he said.

Emphasising the need for generosity among medical practitioners, Dr.

Kalam asked doctors to treat patients before asking them to complete

formalities. “A doctor saves lives first,” he said. Medicine and

compassion should go hand in hand, he added. He asked nurses to

greet patients with a smile, as it plays a major role in curing ailments.

Referring to the lack of interest among doctors to take up teaching, he

said that teachers should be given a good salary and pleasant work

atmosphere. “One should not be forced into the profession. Those

taking up teaching should have a passion for it,” he added.

No-frills does not mean qualitycost trade off," cautions Vaatsalya's Founder & CEO Dr Ashwin Naik. "To us, a decent private room need not necessarily mean a room with an LCD TV; there could just be an ordinary television with local channels. In most locations we may not even provide an air-conditioner but we do not compromise on the quality of medical equipment," he says.
