PROJECT BRIEF

Page 5: final journal

PROJECT BRIEF The brief of this project is to create a geteway into wyndham for city bound traffic on the princess highway. This project is an opportunity to capitalise on the success of “Seeds of Change” Gateway, located at the eastern interchange, and create an equally compelling installation.

Aims for the gateway by the council- Exciting and eye catching installation- Inspires and enriches Wyndham city council.- Enhance the physical environment through the introduction of a visual arts component.- It will have longevity in its appeal, encouraging ongoing interest in the Western- Make a significant impact.- Accessible to a wide public and should explore place‐making aspects and qualities- Provide an entry statement and arrival experience, and become a new identifier for the municipality- Create a focal point of iconic scale and presence and encourage a sense of pride within the local community- New, inspiring and brave ideas, to generate a new discourse- The installation need not be literal or didactic in its references, as it may capture a more abstract, aspirational intent and feeling.

SITE DESCRIPTION

The site of the future Western Gateway installation is located on the road reserves adjacent to thePrinces Freeway, at the interchange with the Princes Highway (Geelong Road), commonly known as the Western Interchange (Melway reference – map 244 B4). The Princes Freeway provides ex-cellent exposure onto the site, with south‐bound and north‐bound traffic along the Princes Free-way that divide the site into 3 locations. Site A situated in between the highway, while site B is at the end of the intersection with the backdrop of a service centre at the back, and site C is small narrow patches along the access to wyndham city.

OUR AIMS Aims to break wyndham from its stagnant past and support its ambition to becomes Victoria centre for progressive art community. The use of parametric design as the starting point in achieving the future aims of wyndham.

ARCHITECTUREAS A DISCOURSE

For the gateway design, the idea of iconic approach had become the centre strategy in generating discourse among the com-munity. By taking inspiration from The Falling Water, the approach of Frank Lloyd Wright in breaking the stagnant of the old ar-chitecture styles by introducing the new modernist movement in this house had result a significant discourse that had shape the entire modern architecture. Braking from the norm, the impact of this modernist icon proved to have more memorable and lasting discourse. Similar to our case, the use of parametric design is seen as a new architectural movement that move away from the contemporary architecture. This strategy hopefully will turn the gateway to become one of the pioneer icons for parametric movement that might create a huge discourse in the future and introduce Wyndham to a greater audients.

ARCHITECTURE AS ICON OF THE PEOPLEBEIJING OLYMPIC STADIUMHERZOG DE MEURON

The Beijing Olympic stadium had become one of the icon and landmark for 2008 Beijing Olympic and for China as a whole. The approach taken by Herzog de Meuron in wrapping the vernacular precedents with a modern progressive envelope had become one of the inspirations for this gateway project. Not only the use of parametric design in this building reflect the state of progress for china to move forward, but the vernacular influence from the Chinese culture also represent the Chinese people. Looking at parametric as one of the solution to move forward, the gateway project should become a symbolic icon that portrayed Wyndham ambition of progression and should represent its people. It is an expression of moving forward but still rooted with the local context.

ART & CRAFT OF COMP. ARCHITECTURE

CONTEXTUAL COMPUTATION ARCHITECTURENORDPARK RAILWAY STATIONZAHA HADID

Computation and parametric architecture provide designers and architects the freedom to manipulate the design in correspond to the input that they have. This give the design to be more interacted with the context and create a better connection between them. The Nordpark railway station by Zaha Hadid is one of the examples that take this matter into account. As explain by Peter Schumacher, one of the architects that involved in this project; the cloud form of the roof is actually designed based on the surrounding environmental input of the context. The forms are the result that reflects the shape of the glazier in cre-ating a seamless transition from the context into the structure. He further emphasise the potential of computation architecture in making architecture to be more sensitive with its surrounding. For the gateway project, the computational architecture through parametric design provide the solution for the gate-way to response to the Wyndham context and the site input such as speed and view of the driver in creating unpredictably exciting and eye catching form.

Known as pAlice project by Softlab architecture firm, this structure summarise all the potential and capabilities that parametric design can pro-vide for the gateway project. Designed based on the manipulation of view by calculating the view angles and input elements, the prefabrica-tion technique that they used is what matter the most in this entry. They describe that the construction of this structure involve more than 2400 la-ser cut triangles and over 3600 custom connection, with all the tooling and labelling was automated by using computer scripting. Thus, this shows us the capabilities of parametric design to work in hand with prefabrication in materialise the complex design. Besides it also justify the advan-tage of computer scripting in saving more time in translating the design to manufacturer and the prefabrication benefit in delivering complex parts and save more cost in materiality. Hence, with this precedent, it can justify our intention to use parametric design as the main driver in design-ing the gateway as it provide more freedom in experimenting the form and by the help of prefabrication, it will save more time and cost for the council.

REVERSE ENGINEERINGReverse engineering of the case study is one of the crucial sections in understanding the concept, the scripting and the construction behind the design. Thus, the Airspace Tokyo and the OMA, McCormik tribute campus centre has been chosen in order to demonstrate the elements that make up behind them.

VORONOI FACADE AIRSPACE TOKYOFAULDERS STUDIO

The façade of this building can be achieved by layering several voronoi surfaces next to each other. The voronoi pattern can be easily scripted in grasshopper and arrange together to form the design.

This simple effect can be easily achieved by overlaying two similar polka-dot surfaces on top of each other. The perspective had created the illusion as we see through it.

MATERIAL EFFECTAs a group research, we experiment with different kind of materials in order to find the effect that we want. We played with transparent and opaque material in looking at the effect of shadow and light that pass through them..

ESSAMBLY METHODThe prefabrication technique provides us the solution to translate our idea into the real life. By using grasshopper scripting, we are able to layout and label our digital model easily before being send to the Fablab. This assimilate the real life construction technique preferred by parametric design which proven to be more economical and save more time.
