Principal’s Message
Our sincerest thanks and best wishes of success to the staff who will be leaving Derry West Village Public School to pursue different teaching and learning opportunities. We greatly appreciate their many contributions to our students and school and will miss them as valued colleagues of our learning community.
Good Bye to… Mrs. A. Thring has been a valued staff member at Derry West Village Public School for the past eleven years! During this time, she has sup-ported students as an In-School Support teacher, ESL teacher, Physical Education teacher and in her current role as a Grade 2/3 teacher. Mrs. Thring will be teaching Grade 3 at James Potter Public School. Her kind spirit and professionalism will be missed!
Ms. M. Sandhu has become a familiar face around Derry West Village. Firstly as an Occasional teacher, then as the Long Term Occasional teacher of the PTP class and currently as a Grade 1 Dance teacher. She has accepted a teaching position at Worthington Public School where she will be opening a Junior ASD class. Congratulations Ms. Sandhu!!! Mrs. R. Manzo-Chan supported Class K7 with Mrs. Steane. Her last day at Derry West Village was June 6, 2014. Mrs. Chan resigned from her position as a DECE to become an Occasional Teacher with the Peel Distrcit School Board. Although, Mrs. Chan is loving her new role she misses her students in K7 and Derry West Village P.S. Mrs. J. Graziano has supported the Full Day Kindergarten students in Class K6 for the past two years. She has promoted inquiry based learn-ing with our little learners and supported them through their discoveries through play. Mrs. Graziano will be a DECE at Birchbank Public School which is much closer to her home. Best Wishes! Mrs. B. Shah has also been at Derry West Village since the arrival of Full-Day Kindergarten. She has supported the students in Class K2 with Mrs. Cooper. We appreciate Mrs. Shah’s many contributions to the learning and discoveries of her students. Mrs. Shah will be opening the new FDK program at Champlain Trail P.S. as a DECE. They are lucky to have you, Mrs. Shah!

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, is considered one of the holiest months of the year by followers of Islam. June 28th or 29th, 2014 marks the beginning of Ramadan this year. It is during Ramadan that Muslims observe the Fast for the entire month. It is a time of worship and con-templation. A time to strengthen family and community ties. We wish our Muslim community the very best during this special time and an early “Eid Mubarak”.
Welcome to...

We can still feel the energy of our wonderful Asian assembly/talent show. There is no shortage of talent at Derry West Village from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Our students showcased the rich cultures and heri-tage of Asia through poems, skits, many songs, instrumental performances, dances – Hip Hop, Bharat-nathyam, Bangra and many more. Thank you to our students, staff and parent community for making this assembly and talent show so meaningful and memorable for everyone!!
New for 2014! Let’s Play in the Park is a free, safe and supervised nine week outdoor playground summer program. This no registra-tion required program will be offered at 12 local playgrounds across Mississauga. Children 6-12 years of age along with their parents, grandparents and caregivers can drop by and our trained summer park leaders will guide active play through physical activities, crafts, drama, and games. With only 5% of children meeting the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines of 60 minutes of physical activity every day, play might be one of the easiest, most affordable and fun ways for our children to get moving. The City of Mississauga is committed to supporting the benefits of play through a free, no registration playground program for healthier and happier children, parents and caregivers.
Let’s Play in the Park is designed to meet the High Five Quality Assurance Standard for delivering quality recreational services for children. We train all our leaders working with children in HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Develop-ment (PHCD) to best address the needs of your child. HIGH FIVE helps us ensure your child is in good hands and will enjoy a positive experience in our programs. We are always open to your feedback about our programs. Listed below are 9 fantastic books to read this summer:
These books were selected because they connect to the Peel District School Board’s commitment to a positive learn-ing and working environment. Suggested activities for each book are provided on the Peel’s website http://www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild in the “Parent” section under the heading of “Help your Child - literacy”.
For other great books to read, please visit the public library. The librarians can recommend other fantastic books to read during the summer.
Reading Tips: 1. Talk about the book as you read the story and after you read it.
2. Re-read favourite books. 3. Be a good example. Let your child see you reading. Discuss with your child what you read.

Summer Reading
Have a safe and happy summer.
See you in September.
Week 1 Play with your child and pretend to have conversations with characters from your favourite stories – e.g., Talk to Goldi-locks to find out how she felt when she met the Three Bears. Toy telephones will help encourage make believe conver-sations.
Week 2 Using blocks, Lego and model toys, build a structure together and pretend you are the construction worker planning and building a new road – “Do you think we need a bridge? What should we use to build it?”
Week 3 Play the I Spy game. “I spy with my little eye something that is blue and starts with the ‘sk’ sound.”
Week 4 Help your child to create a restaurant, grocery store, post office, etc. Talk about the furniture and objects that you will need. Talk about the jobs of the people in the settings. “Do they wear uniforms? What can we use?”
The Learning Partnership
R - Be a role model to your child
E - Enjoy reading together
A - Allow your child to choose their books
D - Read daily
“Play is so important to optimal child development that it has been recognized by the United Nations High Commis-sion for Human Rights as a right of every child.”
(American Academy of Paediatrics, 2012)
Ideas for parents:
Encourage your child to put on a show for the family. Use dress up clothes, puppets and hats. Let him/her pick
the show topic. Provide dress up clothes and props. Use old clothes, necklaces, ties,
or something from a garage sale for creative play. Boxes, blankets and cushions make great forts, castles and hide-
aways.

Monthly Reading Activities
Week 1 Collect newspapers and flyers that come in the mail. Help your child to cut out and paste the pictures and words to make little books – e.g., My Red Book, My Favourite Snacks.
Week 2 Play games using reading, writing and matching – e.g., Go Fish, Uno, Bingo, Concentration.
Week 3 Write a message, send a greeting card or make a lsit. Take the time to show your child what you are doing and read it together.
Week 4 At the grocery store or shopping centre play the game “Can you read the sign?”. Point out signs and labels and ask your child to guess what each is, using the clues around.

“Before you write or speak there is a physical response. To help children learn, they need to use a variety of their
senses, which is achieved through active participation in their learning process.” (NAEYC, 2010)
Ideas for parents:
Sing songs like “Head and Shoulders Knees and Toes.”
Put some music on and dance together.
Use large sidewalk chalk to draw and trace together. Play sports, talk about the rules of the game, connect words to
body movements (run, jump, skip etc.) Read a book or sing a song with lots of actions (We’re going on a
bear hunt).
