SKETCHBOOK RENDERINGS

LOOKS FROM LIGHTING

The appearance of an item changes whenthe light source is altered. Using a bottle, light was shined on it from six differentangles creating six different perceptionsof the bottle. A graphite pencil was usedfor sketching, blending and shading, expressing the shadowing from the lightsource.

SIZINGRelating one thing to another interms of size can be captured byseeing the size of something fromthe perspective of an object. Aflower petal from a ladybugs viewwould be rather large but from ourview , the flower would be in scale.Sketches were drawn with agraphite pencil.

A PROCESSION FROM CONCEPT TO ROUGH DRAFTS

4

AVATARBeginning with a concept then following through to personify that concept started with rough sketches of a facethen pulling it forward to a close up. Choosing features that were strong but not overpowering developed in theillustrative rough. Shading was added as the concept progressed into the final rough draft. Mechanical pens andgraphite pencils were used to outline and blend the features .

PRODUCT

Product illustration began as an effort to duplicate an actual product recreating it as closelyas possible. By using graphite pencil the China doll was drafted then stippling wasincorporated in the final design. Pencil was used on the rough draft as a guide for stipplingthe final.

A WALK IN THE FOREST

Creating a general concept in the thumbnails, an idea developed in the first rough draft to use a younggirl. After adding the visualized key it developed into the final draft where the key was seen from adifferent perspective. Graphite pencil was used in the rough drafts.

AVATAR

Sketchbusters , the chosen name for theclass, called us to create an avatar. Icreated a close up of a girls face, focusingonly on one side of her face. This gavethe perception of mystery and intrigue.Looking closely into the eyes arereflective pools shaped as ghosts . Theghosts could be mirror reflections ofactual figures or merely images evolvingfrom her minds eye, as if they areappearing from behind the eye. Notcommitting one way or the other peakscuriosity. No fear is displayed yetinstead a calmness that draws her intothe ghosts instead of away from them. This is supported by few details in thefacial features. Mechanical pens wereused for detail and outlining whilegraphite pencils were used for shadingand blending.

PRODUCT ILLUSTRATION

Detail and definition are achievedthrough stippling. Using an object andrecreating it as close to the original objectas possible through small ink dotsresulted in a replica of a small China doll.Dots are used to add texture, shadowsand tone to the drawing. By using darkerdots that are closer together , shadowsare born and the drawing is moredefined. Stippling gave the picture a veryclean appearance. For stippling thispicture, mechanical pens were used.

ULTIMATE BEDTIME STORY

Using a single phrase and bringingit to life through illustrationencouraged creativity. Using thephrase, “it began with a singledrop” an idea developed. Startingas a single drop of rain, the pictureprogressed into raining cats anddogs. Wanting to keep theillustration lighthearted andwhimsical, the drawings weredeveloped into characters for achildren’s bedtime story.Watercolor and carbon pencil wereused. The watercolor wasinstrumental in giving the effect ofrain and enhancing the cloudswhile the carbon pencil providedopportunity for shading andblending.

A WALK THROUGH THE FOREST

Traveling through the forest on anarrative journey inspiredcreativity through use ifimagination. By relying onimagination the picture wascreated in my mind before beingcreated by hand. Picturing myselfas a little girl walking through theforest, I spotted a key. The key isan old skeleton key and isilluminated by a slight glow in myshadow. Water color and carbonpencil were used in thisillustration.
