Architectural  Design  1  Instructor:  Jerry  Lum    Jonathan  Alvarado

Spring  2011

Introduc>on  “Time  and  Memory”

For  the  second  half  of  the  semester,  we  were  to  use  all  of  the  sources  we  have  researched  from  the  beginning  of  the  semester    and  incorporate  the  ideas  and  inspira>ons  into  our  final  project.    This  way  we  can  promote  everything  we  have  learned    from  architectural  design  class  and  Jerry.

The  way  I  approach  the  second  half  of  the  semester  was  by  simply  sketching  figures  into  my  note  pad  and  trying  to  create  a  tectonic  language  that  can  communicate  emo>ons  and  human  experiences  through  the  physicality's  of  my  architectural  design.

Some  of  the  difficul>es  I  faced  during  this  second  half  was  the  lack  of  inspira>on.  For  many  of  us,  it  became  an  overwhelming  feeling  of  being  stuck  and  unmo>vated.    With  Jerry’s  help  and  the  ar>cles  he  posted  up  on  our  online  group,  opened  up  many  doors  in  which  our  ideas  and  thoughts  behind  our  design  became  infinite.

Enric  Miralles    One  of  the  biggest  inspira>ons  that  helped  me  throughout  the  resf  of  the  semester

was  architect  Enric  Miralles  ar>cle  “Architecture  of  Time”  in  which  Miralles  introduces  two  ideas  of  prolonging  life.  With  this  ar>cle  I  began  to  understand  the  way  he  incorporated  some  of  his  ideas  into  his  architectural  project  (Igualadas  Cemetery).

I  began  to  use  some  of  his  ideas  such  as  the  “prolonging  of  life”  Ideas  and  applied  it  into  my  final  project.  One  of  the  two  ideas  was  to  extend  the  distance  between  the  two  points  (Birth  and  Death)  therefore  living  longer  and  extending  our  journey  in  life.  The  second  idea  had  to  do  with  the  rate  of  speed  in  which  we  walk.  Philosophers  came  to  the  idea  of  walking  in  a  zigzag  form  in  order  to  extend  >me.

even  with  the  inspira>on  to  help  me  stay  focused  and  on  Track,  I  s>ll  had  some  difficul>es  with  the  landscape  and  the  way  it  was  formed.  I  was  not  sa>sfied  enough  with  the  outcome  of  my  landscapes.    It  was  a  frustra>ng  moment  in  >me  in  which  I  could  not  escape.

Some  of  the  problems  I  had  with  the  first  model,  consisted  of  crea>ng  a

communica>on  between  my  architecture  and  landscape.      There  was  not  enough  architecture  which  depicted  my  landscape  as  the  domina>ng

element  in  my  project.        The  simplicity  of  my  model  has  to  increase  more  that  its  current  stage  and  introduce

more  architecture  in  the  beginning,  Middle  and  End  of  my  model  presenta>on.    The  narra>ve  and  concept  behind  my  idea  was  unclear.  It  did  not  communicate  with

what  I  was  presen>ng  in  my  model.    Many  interpreted  my  model  as  a  “Crab”  “Spider”  and  even  a  “Aero  Dynamic

Machine”.  when  I  was  trying  to  make  it  seem  sacred  through  its  monumentality  in  scale  over  the  landscape  and  its  fragile  character  the  would  evoke  a  sense  of  reverence.

I  completely  disregarded  my  first  model  and  began  sketching  new  landscapes  and  trying  to  transform  my  actual  model  to  make  it  a  beau>ful  design    that  will  promote  a  notable  impression.

Architectural design 1: Inspiration (Enric Miralles)

Jonathan AlvaradoArch 214/11/2011

I was really inspired by Enrics Miralles “Architecture of time” article. though he gives us plenty of ideas and themes.

the one that really stood out the most for me was the idea of “Prolonging Life” .Architect Miralles responds with two answers for the idea of “prolonging life”

The !rst answer talked about the creation of a great distance between two points (birth and Death)this way the distance created will extend our journey of life therefore living a longer enjoyable life.

Miralles second answer was to walk slower, walking in a zig zag pattern with pionts in which god desiresthem to be.

We all want to live a long succesful life. we all have the freedom to choose our own paths and destiny. the reason for choosing our own destiny is due to curiousity. a chance to explore this large world we live inand understand that a lifetime is not permanent.

once we closer to our !nal destination we begin to fear death. But, what is it in the !rst place?why do we fear it so much if we have never experienced it.In my models i will express my long journey to my temple of time and memory. once i get there i would have lived a long life. my temple of time and memory will be the place of my !nal rest.

Architecture 21: Design Studio 1Temple of Rest: inspired by The Prolongingof life.

Idea 1: The extention between the two points of birth and death

Idea 2: walking slower, leaving points where god desires them to be. best way is to walk in a zizaging motion.

“To be permanent is contrary to exsistance, things are forever changing”. qualities: insidious nature, feeling of being traped.

this inspired me to create my temple of Time‘ and memory into the temple of rest.

consists of physical world and a more phantas- magoric world ( spiritual world)

The bridge is supose to evoke that feeling of acceptance of a lifetime. welcoming death.

Conclusion

This  whole  semester  has  been  one  of  the  most  difficult  semesters  for  me.  At

the  same  >me  I  really  enjoyed  every  second  in  this  class.  It  really  gave  me  a  push  forward  in  achieving  my  goal  of  becoming  an  architect.  I  have  notes  and  experiences  that  have  educated  and  shaped  me  to  become  a  be\er  student.  Jerry’s  inspira>onal  talks  have  change  the  way  I  view  many  things  and  got  me  out  of  the  closed  mind  I  captured  myself  in.  I  know  now  to  carry  the  skills  that  jerry  taught  me  in  order  to  promote  my  work  and  relate  to  others  through  my  architecture.  I  would  gladly  and  enjoyably  take  this  course  again.
