Celebrated in the works of Munshi Premchand and Rudyard Kipling among many other illustrious literary works, Nainital is one of India’s most popular hillside destinations. It has very strong mythological connotations too. The gorgeous Naini Lake is said to be the place where Goddess Parvati’s eyes fell down.

A sparkling lake ringed by emerald mountains, Bhimtal is arresting in its beauty and the solitude of its surroundings spin a web that is magical. Bhimtal has a temple called Bhimeshvara Mahadev Mandir that is named after the warrior Bhima of the mighty Pandavas. It is said that Bhima visited this place during the vanvaas phase of the Pandavas.

Its name means the lake of nine corners and Naukuchiatal is one of the most beautiful spots in the region with its trees and shrubs imbuing the area with a fairy-tale like atmosphere. Naukuchiatal is one of the few places which has a temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. Legend has it that anyone performing a parikrama of the lake will be blessed by Lord Brahma.

Bhowali does not have a lake but that does not, in any way, take away from the ethereal quality of the place chiefly due to the clear views of the Himalayas. The area also has a temple built for the glory of Golu Devata, one of the principal deities of the region of Uttarakhand who is worshipped as an avatar of Lord Shiva.

The entire region around Gagar takes on a fairly tale quality during winter. The area receives snowfall between December and February and the wondrous white beauty of the landscape is an experience of a lifetime. Not one to be missed.
