FINAL PROJECT REPORT re: Cortes Island Visitor Kiosk By: Cortes Island Business & Tourism Association (CIBATA) Project Name and Applicant Information = Cortes Island Visitor Kiosk Project Start Date and Completion Date = March 2016 to August 31, 2016 Context for the project (why) = During the summer months, Cortes Island hosts thousands of tourists. The majority of visitors arrive by BC Ferry from Campbell River via Quadra Island to Cortes Island, where there is little signage and no proper visitor orientation. This gave a poor first impression and was a lost opportunity to properly greet and orient visitors. Summary of work and methodology in relation to project objectives (what and how) = This was primarily a DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION project, with preliminary Concept Drawings by a local architect, the actual building done by local welders, carpenters, painters and lots of co-ordination and support by CIBATA contract employees and volunteers. Statement of completion of project objectives = The Kiosk has been created and it was publically launched at the annual summer Cortes Day Festival in July. Explanations if some project objectives have not been completed = The only outstanding item is the approval (by Tourism Vancouver Island via Destination BC) of signage for the kiosk. Explanations if the scope or work is different from proposal = We decided to make a mobile kiosk rather than a permanent building, now we can take the kiosk to special seasonal events at different venues around the island, also trade shows to promote Cortes Island, and we have permission from BC Ferries to park on their property in Campbell River, Quadra Island and Cortes. Number of temporary jobs created during construction = 6 (carpenters, welder, painter, project co-ordination, designer, sign maker) . Number of permanent new jobs created (if possible) = 0 in the short-term but in the future we will be investigating hiring summer students to work in the kiosk helping visitors. Any other information related to the economic impact of the project (ie. # of new businesses created) = The kiosk is an infrastructure investment in supporting small business on the island by promoting tourism, to insure that visitors can find the information about local businesses and services. This project will support the growth of the eco-tourism industry by

FINAL PROJECT REPORT re: Cortes Island Visitor Kiosk By: Cortes Island Business & Tourism Association (CIBATA)

Project Name and Applicant Information = Cortes Island Visitor Kiosk

Project Start Date and Completion Date = March 2016 to August 31, 2016

Context for the project (why) = During the summer months, Cortes Island hosts thousands of tourists.

This project will support the growth of the eco-tourism industry by

supporting a positive visitor experience. Spin off benefits include visitors who decide to return and explore more of the region on future holidays, those who buy property, build homes and start businesses. All of which benefits the entire region.

Economic development partnerships = Support of the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) with funding of the project and their commitment to economic development in the region.

Lessons learned and next steps = To fully equip the kiosk with helpful, entertaining, educational, and seasonal information that is of value to visitors and locals.

Media coverage the project has received = not applicable
