Message from the Principal Advisor

Dated : 19-04-2017

I convey my best wishes to all the students (Old and New) of Brahmaputra College,

Guwahati on the occassion of publication of Academic Prospectus, 2017. I wish that the

Prospectus will help the students and guardians to learn about this new institution of Higher

Education.

The College and its management have a dream of becoming a new kind of institution of

higher learning in this part of the country. For example, the college has already started

Applied Physics Programmes at Undergraduate and Post-Graduate levels.

Due to the knowledge Revolution and the ongoing 4th industrial Revolution, Education,

in general and Higher Education in Particular, are facing serious challenges. I wish the

management, teachers and guardians will all co-operate in helping the students in facing

and managing the future challenges.

With best wishes,

Prof. Kulendu Pathak

Ex. Vice-Chancellor

Dibrugarh University

Message from the Vice-Chancellor, ASTU

Brahmaputra College is an affiliated college of Assam Science and Technology University.

With the advent of the new Academic year, it is introducing few more courses thus creating more

opportunities for students to select a subject. Future projections are also included in the new

document.

It is important to have all round development of the character of students during their stay in

the institution. Therefore, the courses need to be innovative and introduce more of skill

development during the period. New teaching methods are being developed that would

particularly be suited for the college. The learning process would be both at theoretical as well as

experienced practical level linked by processes of adaptation and reflection. The combination of

theory and practice would be provided within the courses and would allow the processes of

adaptation and reflection to develop freely ensuring the maximum possible benefit to all. Stress

would be on to gain more tacit knowledge along with explicit knowledge.

We hope to see many more new courses being taken up by the college.

Scopes & Benefits of Geophysics for Earthquake Research Study in North-East

I. Preamble

GEOPHYSICS is a branch of Earth Science dealing with the physical processes and phenomena occurring in the earth. Geophysics

applies the principles of physics to the study of the earth. This study includes primarily the following major aspects:

- Earth's crust and its interiors

- Earthquake phenomena

- Mineral exploration

II. Geophysics and Earthquakes

Geophysics dealing with earthquakes is termed as Seismology. It is the scientific study of earthquakes and the propagation of elastic

waves through the Earth. A recording of the earth motion as a function of time is called Seismogram. The instrument which records

such motion is called Seismograph/ Seismometer. A scientist who does research in Seismology is called Seismologist.

III. Causes of Earthquakes

Earthquakes are caused by a sudden vertical or lateral movement of rocks along a rupture surface. As per the plate tectonics theory,

the entire surface of the earth is covered by numbers of rigid plates. These plates are slowly moving continuously. While moving

some plates rub against each other, some plates sink beneath each other and some plates pull apart from each other. During the

movement of the plates at certain places, the rock at the edges of the plates get distorted i.e. strain developed. Since the motion of

the plates continues, the strain builds up gradually and finally the rock breaks and the two sides move. The breaking rocks cause a

shaking that radiates out from the breaking point. This shaking can be of different magnitudes. This is the origin of earthquake.

IV. National Centre for Seismology (NCS)

NCS is established by Ministry of Earth Science, Govt. of India, to address all earthquake related

Matter's in the country under one umbrella of the Earth System Science Organization (ESSO). This centre provides effective linkages/

interface amongst various organizations/ institutions working in the field of Seismology. NCS maintains a National Seismological

Network consisting of a total of 82 field observatories including some in North-East for monitoring of seismic activities on

continuous basis. Scientists of NCS are also involved in various research works in Seismology earthquake science. There are five main

divisions under NCS which are as follows:

_ Earthquake Monitoring Services

_ Earthquake Hazard & Risk Management

_ Geophysical observation System

_ Earthquake Process & Modeling

_ Program Planning & Coordination

As per NCS, 29 Indian cities/ towns are highly vulnerable to earthquakes. North-East region falls under the zone-V which is

considered to be the highest damage risk zone. It is understood that there are 20 VSAT based real time monitoring network

seismological stations.

V. North-East vis-à-vis Occurrence of Earthquake

Entire North-East region is tectonically very active and hence seismologically very sensitive. Pasthistory shows the occurrence of

earthquakes of high and small magnitudes as per the Richter scale. A geophysicist having seismology as a specialization can

contribute a lot towards understanding of the earthquake phenomena particularly in the North-East region. There is a good scope

for Seismologist to do research work on this subject in respect of earthquake prediction, epicenter location, process & modeling etc.

Various academic institutions in N-E region may take initiative to include this subject in the course curriculum for the benefit of

students and to help research workers.

VI. Conclusion

1. North-East region of India under seismic zone-V (highly vulnerable to earthquake) needs intensive geophysical study in respect of

seismological phenomena.

2. It is to understand if the geophysical facilities including other related material support/ Man power support is adequate at the

existing seismological stations in North-East.

3. With the help of NCS, more emphasis needs to be given on seismological research work especially for North-East region.

4. Guwahati being a gateway to North-East, needs more seismological attention in respect of earthquake hazard and risk

management.

5. National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad may be approached for technological updates in the field of

Seismology w.r.t tectonically active North-East region. Above can effectively be executed only when the academic institutions

particularly in Guwahati introduce Geophysics/ Seismology in their relevant course curriculum.

Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar agreed with the local Government to handover the above said institution for establishing a

University. Thus, on 01.01.1929 Annamalai University was established as per Annamalai University Act 1928 (Tamil Nadu Act 1

of 1929).

Annamalai University Act 2013

The most significant development is the enactment of the Annamalai University Act, 2013 (Tamil Nadu Act 20 of 2013), which

by giving presentation in front of teachers and other students, they can improve their

confidence, presentation skills and communication abilities. Normally, every student

has to give one or two presentations on every subject in a month.

COMMUNICATION & SOFT SKILLS

Spoken English, Personality Development, Interview Winning Training

The College offers regular classes on Spoken English, Communication & Soft Skills to

every batch. This course is designed in such a way that all the beginners , non-english

speaking students as well as english speaking students will be interested in the subject

and be benefitted from the subject. To make it more effective, special Audio-Visual

presentations are given and if require study materials are also provided.
