Y The Festival History
The International Festival of Theatre Schools SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER was organized in 2013 by the Faculty of Theatre of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno for the twenty-third time. It was here, in the heart of the South Moravian region in 1990, where the idea to organize a meeting of all the three theatre universities from the former Czechoslovakia was born. The meeting should pro-vide space for inspiration, presentation of samples from their creation and transfer of experience and methods of work of not only educators, but also students. During more than 20 years, the formerly weekend meeting of the three schools grew into a festival, which is now a five-day multicultural event. So far, 38 schools from all over the world attended the festival. Each year, 12–15 theatre groups come to Brno and we can meet here almost three thousand participants.
In addition to the rich main program, the festival participants have the opportunity to participate in discussions, seminars, workshops, performances by the JAMU and a rich evening programme.
The character of the festival has also, due to the development, changed from its originally competi-tive nature to non-competitive nature. At the end of the Festival, however, it is a custom to hand out the awards that will showcase the outstanding artistic performances. This withdrawal from the competi-tive nature of the festival highlights the basic vision of the festival – the objective is, above all, coopera-tion, sharing of experience and inspiration among all participants of the festival.
The direction of individual years gives the theme, which is characteristic for the given year. This year‘s theme for the festival was the contrasts. From diverse areas, in which one can percieve con-trasts, we are especially interested in the theatre ones. After all, the theatre itself is built upon the principle of interaction of opposites: light-dark, comedy-tragedy, laugher-crying, tension-release, silence-shouting, horror-enthusiasm... All of them united together form the world spread out in front of the audience – a world whose secrets are revea-led to the viewer after the release of the curtain... Although... Is it really about all the secrets? Is the final product – the presentation – not only a fraction of a much bigger world? A world behind the curtain before its release? The world of preparation, the world behind the curtains, the world of chaos, ner-vousness, panic, joy, release, fun? What a contrast!
During the period of 16–20 April 2013, the parti-cipants of the festival had an opportunity to see a total of 23 performances from twelve internati-onal schools on five stages in Brno and 8 offpro-gramme productions (performances created at the DIFA JAMU).

Participating Schools
The 23rd festival SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER was atten-ded by a total of 12 schools from all over the world. The core of the festival consists of the schools that were present at the birth of the festival – Theatre Faculty of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts, Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. From the number of 26 received and properly filled-in applications and according to the predetermined criteria were on a basis of a competition subsequently further 10 universities chosen. The selection committee then made two major changes in the main program – the absence of two selected universities. Although the university of Italy had to cancel its participation, the organizers managed to find another university that would be interested to join in. Unfortunately a few days before the festival this university in Bucharest, Romania could not become a part of the festival due to financial difficulties. Due to this unexpected can-cellation it was not possible to find another substi-tute.

The story of revenge takes place at the turn of the 20th century in the 30s in China. Families of Chou Hu and Jiao Yanwang lived from the time immemorial in harmony. They are split only by Jiao’s bloodthirsty rampage where both Chou’s parents die, his sister Jiao is sold to become a prostitute and his former friend Chou is put into prison. Eight years later, Chou manages to escape from his prison cell. He returns full of hatred for all the harm that was done. He is determined to get revenge on Jiao’s family.
The story opens at the moment where he finds out that there is only blind wife, son and mother left after his deceased enemy Jiao. However, he meets his former lover Jin Zi in their garden and he finds out that she shares the bed with Jiao’s son. They decide to escape together. There is a glimpse of hope for Chou’s proper retaliation once again. During their escape through the woods, they are pursued not only by the enemy but also by the tragic consequen-ces of their own decisions. Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky
Bobok
length: 70 minlanguage: Italian (with English subtitles)
director: Grigoriy Lifanovset: Ricky Maggicostumes: Stephanie Metznerchoreography: Corinna Vitalelighting design: Christoph Siegenthaler
cast:
The play is a dramatization of Dostoyevsky’s Bobok. It is one of his shortest prose works; however, in it the author has condensed and laid bare many of the most consequential ideas and themes of the enti-rety of his work. The main character, a failed writer named Ivan Ivanovitch, finds himself in a cemetery in deep frustration, thinking about what he should do. Suddenly he starts hearing the voices of the dead in a lively, open, indeed even obscene conversation. He is shocked by the perverted stories and the lack of restraint expressed by this posthumous debate group, and yet, at the same time, he is glad to have finally found something to write about.
The staging was created as a graduation perfor-mance of the Bachelor programme students under the supervision of the Russian director Grigori Lifa-nov.
It is of interest that it was at the Encounter festival of 2008 that Lifanov and Dimitri’s school crossed paths for the first time, and that this became the basis on which the director accepted the schoo-l’s proposal for cooperation in 2012. With his help the students have created a visually impressive, aesthetically specific and extraordinarily lively performance, where they have used their creative potential and their experience with physical theatre to the fullest.

The sound of Easter church bells is overwhelmed by the noise of an imminent war. The princes have risen in revolt against the Grand Duke and an uprising is beginning in a would-be peaceful village. The Gover-nor Georgi Abashvili has been beheaded! On this fatal day, Grusha got engaged with her lover, Simon Cha-chava. Yet he has to leave for the war while Grusha returns to the palace to help the Governor’s wife Natella Abashvili to flee, as a huge reward is offered for the head of the successor to the throne.
The Governor’s wife is leaving the village, but she has forgotten the most important thing – her son! So Grusha runs away with the child to hide in the mountains for the following five years. In order to keep little Michael from freezing and starving, Grusha breaks her promise and marries somebody else. The end of the war is approaching and Simon Chachava is coming back home. He finds his betrothed married and with a child. This is the end of the first part of the story.
The second part takes us back to the beginning of the war, to Easter when the village clergyman Azdak finds a stranger pursued by the soldiers in the forest, and he hides him in his hut. The next day, Azdak finds out that the stranger is the Grand Duke himself, retur-ning to the village for his judgment.

Playing Peer Gynt!
length: 135 minlanguage: German
director: Elina Finkelscript editor: Botho Strauβ, Peter Stein, Elina Finkelset and costumes: Lea Haslehnerchoreografphy: Hanna Rohn, Franziska Plüschkemusic: Eddie Luislighting design: Ralph Beyer, Elina Finkel
cast:
What is the essence of human identity? This question and many others are posed by the characters in this play by Henrik Ibsen. The original play in verse was positively receivedin its day. Having had an unhappy childhood, the protagonist Peer Grynt has become an emotionally confused individual in search of his true identity. He shuffles through different modes of living, from being an important boss to being a drug addict.
The filth and confusion of his life are depicted against the backdrop of the white space of the stage. The audience is presented with seven aspects of Peer’s personality as played by seven different actors. Another five female characters meet with Gynt in the play, and their interactions invoke questions about gender stereotypes. The entire play is accom-panied by live music performed in cooperation with students from other departments of the university.

Gustavo Alberto Cuallo Gonzáles (adaptation from W. Shakespeare and Aeschylus)
Macbeth‘s Furies
length: 80 minlanguage: Spanish
director: Gustavo Alberto Cuallo Gonzálezset: Juan Haua Florescostumes: Mónica Parra Hinojosachoreography: Edmond Scottmusic: Jacob Arroyolighting design: Gustavo Alberto Cuallo González
cast:
The audience may look forward to a blending of the works of two literary greats – Shakespeare and Aeschylus. The director depicts the destiny of Ores-tes, who kills his mother Clytemnestra, transferred to medieval times. At that time in Scotland lived King Macbeth, here the reincarnation of Orestes. He meets the Furies who take the form of the witches and attempt to punish him.
The stage setting was created on the basis of “empty space”; its creators were inspired by an exhibition of Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto entitled Ernest’s Ton-gue. The play, therefore, is driven primarily by the actors, who thus are obliged to portray their cha-racters with the utmost devotion. The mystique of the fantastical characters of the witches is enhan-ced by joining the essence of the three characters into one. The director attempted in particular to dis-tinguish supernatural beings from those of real life, and one method employed to communicate the two aspects simultaneously is the use of masks which reflect the different personas of their bearers.

Bertolt Brecht
He Who Says Yes /He Who Says No
length: 120 minlanguage: German
director: Natasha Dubsset and costumes: Aigerim Bekmuhambetovachoreography: Nataliya Novikovamusic: Kurt Weill
cast:
The play is an opera written in 1930 by Bertolt Brecht, which was inspired by a Japanese Noh play Taniko. The first part He Who Says Yes consists of Kurt Weill’s opera and a German libretto supple-mented with Brecht’s lines. The second part was created only after the spectators’ request, but it has never been remade as an opera.
The play tells a story of a little boy whose mother falls ill, and is desperately needs medicine. A teacher is the only person in a town who is willing to bring it from a remote town. Unfortunately, the journey is difficult and the path leads through mountains. The mother persuades the teacher to take the boy with him. But the boy is too weak for the journey and collapses on the road. He thus puts the success of the expedition in danger and the teacher needs to decide what to do with the boy – whether to sacri-fice him or not.
Kurt Weill calls both parts didactic plays, i.e. radi-cal and experimental forms of modernist theatre, which were created by Brecht. Brecht reveals possi-bilities of teaching via acting and the adoption of characters and attitudes in them, and thus makes no distinction between players and the audience.

length: 80 minlanguage: English
director: Mdu Kweyamaset: Little Theatre Workshopcostumes: Leigh Bishopchoreography: Mdu Kweyamalighting design: Luke Ellenbogen
cast:
Brothers in Blood, that hasn’t been translated into Czech yet, was written by an accomplished South African playwright Mike Van Graan. It was directed by postgraduate student of direction Mdu Kweyama at UCT Little Theatre. The performance is a sociologi-cal survey of post-apartheid society in Cape Town. It transcends questions of race, gender as well as age.
The government is unable to resolve violence in townships in connection with drugs and local gangs, and therefore the PAGAD group confronts Muslims. During the intervention they do not hesitate to use military power and this results in civilian casualties - people who are living in constant fear, with no idea what is going on, are killed. This is also the case of the characters in the play: loyal Muslim, Christian, Jew and Muslim woman.
The story captures differences and tension between various religions and South African inhabitants. It depicts a conflict between people who feel driven to argue over differenes of faith although they share a lot in common. The central medium of the perfor-mance is the movement. It is complemented by the text and music which symbolizes the long continu-ous influence of religious and racial animosity as well as violence in South Africa.

As an actor, I often meet the question concerning the differences between acting in front of the camera, on the stage and in the radio studio. That is why I wanted to allow the students to meet the same topic in three different media: in the film, on the radio and in the the-atre. We then worked on the options of acting expre-ssions and their variations according to the medium that the actor works with. We wanted to look at the problems associated with diseases of the brain.
The author of the book, an eminent neurologist, a psychiatrist and psychologist Oliver Sacks, refers to himself as a “romantic neurologist”. The staging is therefore rather an attempt of a poem of the theme of the suffering, which we occasionally witness.”

Shopping and Fucking
length: 105 minlanguage: Polish
director and script editor: Grzegorz Wiśniewskiset and costumes: Dominika Brzeskamusic: Rafał Kowalczyklighting design: Grzegorz Wiśniewski
cast:
The main character, Mark, is fighting his drug addic-tion. He decides to leave his ex-boyfriend Robbie and his girlfriend Lulu because living near them frustra-tes him emotionally. Afterwards, he meets a young prostitute Gary, but even with him he doesn‘t find what he is looking for, as each of them is too lost in their own needs.
Mark Ravenhill’s first full-length play, Shopping and Fucking, is one of the iconic works of the 90s. The play is focused on consumerism and lack of morals in the contemporary society. The whole play explo-res the theme of separation, a world filled with dis-posable things and inability to show real emotions. The names of the characters (Mark, Lulu, Robbie and Gary) are a reference to then enormously popu-lar British boy band Take That and a singer Lulu, who collaborated with them on one of their biggest hits, Relight my fire.
Wiśniewski managed to take a play that is known as a canonical work of New Brutalism or so-called “in-your-face theatre” and crystallize it into a very touching existential drama.

Rite of Spring
length: 90 minlanguage: Czech

cast:
The Rite of Spring is the title of a scenic poem – a theatre performance which was created loosely according to the motifs of the eponymous musical piece by Igor Stravinsky and a libretto by Nicholas Roerich. The Rite of Spring was presented by the Prague theatre DISK as its second graduation pro-duction of the students of the fourth year of the department of alternative and puppet theatre of Prague’s DAMU-SKUTR.
The Formation SKUTR, Lukáš Trpišovský and Martin Kukučka, builds theatrical images by the combina-tion of movement, puppets, sound and the spoken word. Original performances of SKUTR could be described in one word as multigenre – since they combine dancing, movement, acrobatics, puppets, projections, light design, text and sound. “It will not be about building up individual parts; on the con-trary, we are interested in the collective – a group which enhances certain characteristics going back to the animal world, which connects us with nature,” as the production co-author and choreograph Adéla Laštovková Stodolová describes it. Scenography and costumes of the performance should reflect the borderline between the aforementioned civiliza-tion and nature.

length: 150 minlanguage: Slovak
director: Lukáš Brutovskýscript editor: Miro Dachoset: Zuzana Hudákovácostumes: Laura Štorcelová, Veronika Ďurišoválighting design: Jozef Miklós, Michal Čamaj
cast:
The play is a timeless satire attacking the bureaucra-tization of society. The plot takes us among bureau-crats and shows their fighting for the best possible position. Trickery and corruption are cynically pre-sented as natural, everyday phenomena, which are definitely not to worry about. The play shows the callousness of the powerful and the powerlessness of the honest.
The protagonist, an office worker, Vasily Zhadov, is the only exception to the bunch of grovellers who would do anything for money. He is the only one to believe in justice and incorruptibility. But these beliefs outrage Zhadov’s uncle, Vishnevsky, who is not only a high-ranking official, but also a caree-rist and a constant briber. Nonetheless, Vishnevsky offers Zhadov a well-paid job, which he refuses for moral reasons. Later, though, he is forced to ask for that position again because of his wife. But in the mean time, Vishnevsky was removed from his office and is awaiting trial. Once again, Zhadov believes his views were right, and promises himself not to make compromises with his conscience anymore.

Initia-lly detached, a man from the office steps in to this situation and later he interferes in the characters’ lives more than it seems. Johann and Anna attempt to rescue their relationship by making a film about themselves; themselves and their love. However, during the shooting they keep falling into deep disillusion. For Anna, the presence of the stranger is her last chance to break free from a relationship which cannot be ended because Johann doesn’t want to admit that it’s over. The play can be described as a contemporary social drama with some elements of comedy. The authors tried to express a generational testimony by stre-ssing specific aspects of the topic (for example an attitude to responsibility), which can be defined as observation of a present-day relationship between a Man and a Woman. A significant component of this play is a wide scale of different styles (psychologi-cal acting with distinctive stylization), which can be applied due to a number of quotations that occur in the text.

length: 25 min
direction: Zuzana Patrákovádramaturgy: Adam Goldscenography: Hynek Petrželkasound: Tomáš Tušerproduction: Marie Rotnágloválights: Tomáš Tušer

The staging is a montage of a number of texts of dif-fering styles and genres. It is framed by a dramatic text by contemporary actor, dramatist, and director Hubert Krejčí called Naïve Morality (Doctor Sakri-panti’s Potato Theatre), which we have supplemen-ted with a choice of versed lyrical pieces of medieval student poetry Písně žáků darebáků (Rascal Stu-dents’ Songs). These historical materials connected to the abovementioned issue should serve as a tex-tual link with the topic, called “theatre’s relation to society”, or rather “the purpose of society’s theatre activity”. The genre of “naïve morality” presents an encounter with a very specific type of acting, allows us to develop an unconventional attitude in terms of our relation with the audience, as well as in the approach to the overall performance.

WORKSHOPS AND LECTURES
Jazz Dance Workshop with David StrnadThe workshop will be led by Ing. David Strnad, a JAMU teacher. The workshop will focus on development of movement and dramatic interpretative skills. It will include an easy routine focused on mental release, development of “a motion vocabulary”, the startup of communication between participants and the teacher and last but not least confirmation of a theory which claims that everybody can dance.
In the next part of the workshop, a technical one, we will be dealing with everything which actors, actresses and dancers need for nonverbal communication. It covers coordination, development of body skills, jazz polycentrism, body flexibility, spins and jumps. We will try to handle these in a funny and encouraging way. The workshop will be held in English.
Lecturing workshop with Martina ČernáThe lecturing workshop focused on selected dramatic texts of contemporary authors from countries of Visegrád Four. Through these texts, the participants examined mainly social and political issues, which are reflected by individual plays, and confronted it with traditional topics processed in the region of Central Europe. The workshop was held in English. The interactive media were connected with printed texts and discussion. The instructess of the workshop Mgr. Martina Černá is the head of the Department of International Cooperation and Public Relations of the Arts and Theatre Institute. Among other things, she professes the cooperation within the Visegrad Group as a part of her routine.
Lecture of Noel WittsThe lecture‘s content was the development of theater in the UK, Europe and the USA during the course of the 20th and the 21st century. Noel Witts was referring to his book The Twentieth Century Performance Reader which he enriched with sample videos showing various theater productions and performances.
Noel Witts teaches contemporary theater for ten years now at the faculty at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London and the Metropolitan University in Leeds. The main focus of his research is the development of theater, dance, music, videos and art installations. He also pays special attention to the circumstances in which works of art are being created and tries to find out what it is that makes them unique. According to Noel, great emphasis is placed on the work of the former Eastern Europe and the dance program of artists like Merce Cunningham and Pin Bausch. Additionally, he monitors the art of performance of British art companies such as Forced Entertainment and Blast Theory.

ENCOUNTER NIGHTS
Pub NightThis party offers foreign guests a taste of typical Czech entertainment. Prepare yourselves for the table football tournament and Czech beer. The evening will get even better at 21:30, when the local musical band Urband starts playing.
Meeting Point PartyMeeting Point Party is the crucial evening of offprogramme party nights. We have the pleasure to announce that visitors to this year’s party will be entertained by bands such as Poletíme? and the Showstation. DJ Schafff will take care of the dance music and the side stage will belong to the presenter DJ Identita Katarz (Jonáš Garaj) for the whole night. Prepare yourselves for the dance group Les Femmes. If the main programme won’t be enough for you, there will be also a side programme with lots of amusing activities.
La FiestaLa Fiesta is the night in the rhythm of Latin grooves. Visitors should be in the mood for Latin music, Latin cocktails and decorations and of course the similarly themed evening programme from 21:30.
Moravian EveningThis evening at the wine bar is the second most important event of the offprogramme. It is aiming to present traditional Moravian music and dances, and to introduce the foreign visitors to our culture through an informal party, where they can participate in the programme. The cymbalo band will play to dance from 21:30, folkloric dance groups will provide the ceremonial opening dance.
Oldies PartyOldies party is one of the offprogramme evenings of the Encounter Nights. Party will follow after the closing ceremony at The Goose on the String Theatre, the official end of the festival. The theme of this party is oldies style. Don’t miss the amusing offbeat karaoke and delicious drinks!

The Economic Balance of the ProjectThe total budget of the 23rd festival was 2,566,839 CZK. This amount increased compared to the the previous year, primarily due to the opening of the new Na Orli Theater, which entails additional operational costs, and also because of the number of activities that were carried out before the actual festival. Organizing team also managed to secure more financing. The festival is funded by the following sources: grants and subsidies, corporate fundraising, online fundraising, festival sales, the contribution of the Theater Faculty, revenues from collaboration agreements.

The biggest cost items are part of the balance amount for festival marketing, which is largely financed by contributions in kind. The second largest amount is the cost of accommodation and meals for participants of the festival – guests, jury and participants.

Economic impact on the Southmoravian RegionA research had been in progress during this year‘s festival. The goal of the research was to find out about the multiplier effect and the economic impact on the Southmoravian Region. The research has shown that every crown of the subsidy, given to the festival, multiplies CZK 1.62–1.77 back to the region. The economic impact ranges between CZK 1,543,834 and 1,686,782, when all the suppliers are counted. It means that the festival SETKÁNÍ/ENCOUNTER has brought to local economy CZK 600,000 more than is the total sum of all the subsidies in 20131.1 the research of the economic impact of the festival setKÁnÍ/en-CoUnter was the theme of the diploma thesis of this year‘s festival economist. in: ŠebestovÁ, michaela. ekonomické dopady a multipli-kační efekty v kultuře. brno: Janáček Academy of music and perfor-ming Art brno, theatre faculty, theatre management, 2013. thesis supervisor mgA. blanka Chládková.
