CONCEPT STATEMENT

The design of this federal style womens transitional housing organization located in Boston

Massachusetts will be used to promote a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment tothe incoming residents. Soft toned colors, such as grays, yellow, orange, and deep blues, will

be used in the common areas to create a sense of excitement and happiness. Many curvy

lines and geometric shapes are used to keep the environment energetic. The furniture is very

contemporary but dark, it should be durable and child friendly because of the different age

groups that are welcomed within the home. The space will include many different gathering

areas within one, however, each area is used for different purposes. Although the exterior

visual has a federal style, it gives the feeling of whats inside to viewers.

Justifying Solution/Reflection

1. Which of elements and princip les (light, color, line, texture, balance, propor tion , harmony,

etc.) are dominant and subdominant in the design, and how do they support t he concept?

-During this project I chose to accommodate harmony and unity. I did so by making surethat all spaces worked together to accommodate all the clientsneeds and nothing or noone was left out. I also incorporated a neutral color pallet to have a natural but healingenvironment. Due to the various clients in the space everything must be durable andcopasetic with both public and private areas.

2. How does your design reflect the cultu re and diversit y of the client who will occupy thespace? How do the furnitu re, finishes, lighting selections, and custom elements meet theneeds of the women and children living in the transitional housing?

-My design is very neutral not too feminine but almost every space except the bedroomsare can be used as a multipurpose room for meetings, classes etc. The furniture in thespace is very durable due to the amount and variety of people using the space.

3. How did universal design application, code, or egress requirements and environmentaldesign choices influence the decisions you made throughout the design process?

-As far as Universal design everything is accessible. In the restrooms are single vanitiesupstairs and a double vanity downstairs for visiting guest. Spaces such as the commonareas and the meeting areas are very spacious and easy to maneuver.

Reflection:

-During this class I have learned how to work better as a group because I have had somany bad experiences that I was more skeptical because it was online but it also helps

that I had a good partner that doesntalways happen. Also learned how to work around a

space accommodating for all purposes such as multipurpose and private spaces. Staying

within budget isnthard but I still believe I have a better understanding of keeping track of

it.

As an Interior designer I believe everything in each class helps the designer pursue their

goal in the field but that is only if they apply it. As of today I graduate from the Art Institute

of Charlotte. Yesterday was portfolio show I received to job offers/interview request and I

hope this helps me brighten my horizon and I get where I need to be.
