Two things have always been a constant in my life, art and hip-hop. My current work focuses on the timeless nature of masks through the eyes of a modern hip-hop head. I look to explore issues of identity, consumerism, our world at war and to reach out to viewers out-side of the art world. The masks I make are made from highly sought after sneakers, the destruction of such objects of desire allows me to examine my own materialism. It also enables me to work with materials that I love in a similar way to how a DJ might sample, scratch and cut a record. Freehand Profit is a Los Angeles based artist who earned his name as a graffiti artist in DC and Northern Virginia. In 2005 he graduated Corcoran College of Art & Design with a BA in Fine Arts. Since then he’s rooted himself in LA’s Hip-Hop scene and has been working to forget what he learned in art school and make work without the pretentiousness that all too often accompanies “good” art. Currently Freehand Profit is exploring the iconographic nature of masks through his MASK365 project. Inspired by Noah Scalin’s Skull-A-Day, Profit is creating a mask a day and publishing them through his blog. The repetitive nature of the project has allowed Freehand Profit to expand into new artistic approaches and has developed into numerous bodies of work such as the Branding Wars (a series of gas masks re-imagined and transformed with commercial goods like Nike shoes and Gucci hand bags) and the Guerrilla Art Squadron (a series of designs hybridizing gas masks and creatures). As we’ve seen before, the Penny Nike Air Foamposite One, the Foam that started the Foam craze many moons ago, is set to make its return. Though the Penny Foams have come out two times in the past three years, the Penny Foam is one of those sneakers, like the Infrared 90 and Neon 95, that no matter how often you release them, they will be scooped up

quick. The 2011 Penny Nike Air Foamposite One seems to be pretty true to the OG or at least to the retros that have come after it. The one noticeable change is the blueish tint on the outsole which has been used on a couple of the most recently released Foamposites.
