the Financial aid ProcessChoosing to attend East Central College is a smart educational and financial decision. ECC offers a high-quality education at an affordable cost. Even though ECC tuition and fee rates are the lowest in the state, you may still need financial assistance.

Aid is provided in many forms. East Central offers merit-based scholarships and special characteristic awards in addition to need-based scholarships, state and federal grants, work-study, and loan programs which are discussed in more detail on the following pages.

All students who apply for institutional, federal or state financial aid at ECC are required to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The following steps must be completed to apply for financial aid and/or scholarships:

Please note that ALL items from EVERY step MUST BE completed before:

• you will be held in your classes without making a payment.• any financial aid will be applied to your account.

how is Financial aid determined?

Your “calculated need” is determined by subtracting the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from the estimated cost of attending ECC. The expected family contribution is determined from the information supplied by you and your family on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The Financial Aid Office will allocate assistance where financial aid is the greatest as indicated by all available facts. If “calculated need” exists to the extent that you qualify for a Federal Pell Grant, or other federal, state or institutional aid, you will be able to view the awards on eCentral on your award letter. An expense budget is developed, consistent with federal guidelines. This ensures that you as a commuting student receive treatment equal to that of a student living away from home when being considered for financial aid.

This expense budget, or Cost of Attendance (COA), includes standard allowances for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. Your cost of attendance will vary according to residency status, housing status, and dependency status.

Priority deadlinesStudents who submit their Financial Aid Application (FAFSA) and requested documentation on or before the following priority deadlines, and are eligible to receive benefits, will be held in classes. All documents must be received by the financial aid office no later than: Fall July 1 Spring December 1 Summer May 1 After Priority Deadlines: Students who submit their Financial Aid Application (FAFSA) after the above priority deadlines should set up a payment plan with the Business Office to insure that their classes will not be cancelled on the day fees are due. Students should allow 4-6 weeks for the processing of financial aid applications.

Federal GrantsSeveral federal and state grants are available to students, based upon financial need. As long as you meet the Minimum Standards of Academic Progress, earned grant money does not have to be repaid.

The Federal Pell Grant program provides eligible students with a foundation of financial aid to help defray the cost of postsecondary education. The amount of the grant varies depending upon your need, the cost of education, and the availability of funds. Any person who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, enrolled as an undergraduate student, and working toward the first baccalaureate degree is eligible to apply for a Federal Pell Grant.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) program was established to make post-secondary educational opportunities available to qualified students who would be unable to obtain such benefits without financial assistance. Priority is given to Federal Pell Grant recipients with exceptional need who have completed financial aid files.

state GrantsSeveral Missouri State Aid grant programs are awarded on a financial need basis. To be considered for a state award, students must file a FAFSA by April 1. For additional information on Missouri state grants, please refer to www.dhe.mo.gov.

subsidized direct loans Subsidized Direct Loans are based upon financial need. Interest is not charged while you are enrolled at least half-time, (i.e. six credit hours in the fall, spring, or summer). Unsubsidized direct loans Unsubsidized Direct Loans are available to students who do not qualify for the full amount of the Subsidized Direct Loan. These loans are not based upon financial need and you are responsible for interest accrued while in school and during deferment periods for this type of loan. The current (2012-2013) interest rate is fixed at 6.8% and repayment of the principal loan amount begins six months after you cease to pursue at least six credit hours at an institution of higher education.

PlUs (Parent) loans Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) Loans are available to provide parents of dependent students a way to finance education beyond high school. A parent may borrow up to the cost of education minus other financial aid resources you may receive. The current (2012-2013) interest rate is fixed at 7.9% and repayment on a PLUS Loan begins 60 days after the loan is disbursed.
