Greetings from the DirectorDear Alumni and Friends of the Department,

Let me begin by extending my thanks to all of you who have made gifts of both time and money to the Geoscience Founders Society, the Department, and the College over the past year. I am proud to say that your support has provided concrete and direct support to help us achieve our goal of pro-viding the best possible educational experience to our students. Many of you have donated valuable time to assist our graduates to gain a foothold in the workplace, to become better writers, and to network with professionals in many different lines of work. Some alumni have made directed dona-tions that have provided much needed financial assistance for students conducting summer research. Generous alumni support has assisted students in making ends meet when it comes to the cost of at-tending a summer field camp or helped students to attend a professional conference. Still others have continued to bolster the Society’s Endowment Fund and make even more possible down the road. On the pages that follow you will see specific examples of the results of your generous giving. So, please keep up the great work!

As we head into the Fall semester and scan the horizon there are several transitions to note and events to place on your calendar. First and foremost, there are two retirements to note. Prof. Rob Sternberg has announced he will retire at the end of the 2015-2016 academic year. Rob has carried out a rich and productive research and teaching program in geophysics and its application to archaeology since his arrival at F&M in 1983. Please wish him the best as he wraps up his final year of teaching and research at F&M.

Likewise, for over 4 decades the Department has been able to draw on the deep knowledge of our full time Research Specialist, Steve Sylvester. Steve retired at the end of July 2015. Steve came to F&M with his B.S. degree from the University of Dayton and earned a M.Sc. degree in Geology in 1971. He has assisted countless students and faculty in so many different ways over the years and we wish him nothing but the best!

The Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America will be held in Baltimore November 1-4, 2015. F&M will be well represented at the meeting and I would like to point out two events of note. There will be a special Pardee Keynote Symposium dedicated to Appalachian Geomorphology that will feature several speakers with F&M connections. Second, an entire Topical Session will be held to honor F&M alumnus Milan Pavich ’69: Soil to Sediment—From Geologic to Modern Time Scales: A Session to Honor the Work of Milan Pavich.

Last but not least, mark you calendars for Homecoming Weekend, October 2-4, 2015. The Founders Society will host our annual business meeting and get together on the morning of October 3rd. I look forward to seeing you there!Best regards,Chris Williams

A Note from the Geoscience Founders Society President

Dear Departmental Alumni, I trust this seasonal newsletter finds you in good spirit, health, and prospect. It can be reported that our Department continues to perform in an exemplary manner by its continuing growth (now ex-ceeding 100 majors) and graduating an impressive class of 23 seniors, well-qualified to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market and technically sophisticated science. Funds from our growing Geoscience Founders Society endowment have been wisely invested in students in need of support to initiate and complete independent research, in theoretical as well as applied science projects. The exciting details of the endowment growth and its expenditures will be reviewed by way of a separate reporting from Chris Williams, our Director and liaison to the departmental staff and many college resources. He is a tireless, effective contributor to the goals of our society. During my Spring campus visit I had the opportunity to address and congratulate the departing se-niors on behalf of the Founders Society at a celebratory luncheon (pictured below). It was possible for me to speak with each departing senior and encourage them on their journeys into further educa-tional endeavors and/or first professional challenges. They comprise an impressive group character-ized by diverse talents, interests, and potential outcome. Be assured that these students are qualified to perform in the tradition of the department legacy! By the way, I planted the seeds of responsible support to the Founders Society as they begin on a tract of gainful employment and earnings. A Department Alumni Directory is in the final stage of preparation and will be forwarded to Society members very soon. As a cross-reference document you may be surprised to learn of F&M depart-ment alumni living proximal to you! Please contact your neighboring collegial alumni and encour-age each to become a Founders Society member and contributor to our endowment fund. Let me also encourage those of you in a favorable position to engage department students as interns. This is a program that has already gained sponsorship by way of alumni in the past, such as Richard Wright ‘58 and David Lehman ‘68, among others. Finally, stop by the Department in early October during Homecoming weekend for a live update on the Founders Society and Department news. My very best regards,Lane D. Schultz

With Paul HarnikMario Williams ’16 is working this summer (May – July) on the evolution of egg size using samples of live and dead mollusks we collected offshore Alabama and Florida in May and July. This important life history charac-teristic affects offspring survival and previous work has shown that it can vary in response to changing nutrient levels over geologic time. We are investigating whether changes in coastal nutrients over more recent, historical time scales have similarly shaped the life histories of bivalves living in the northern Gulf of Mexico. When we are not out at sea, Mario can be found measuring larval shells using the Department’s SEM. Mario is supported through the Hackman Summer Scholars program.

Morgan Torstenson ’18 and Jared Brush ‘18 are working this summer (May – June) on the evolution of shell shape in response to changing environmental conditions through the Neogene. Specifically, they have been using a 3D scanner in the Paleobiology lab in Hackman to measure the shapes of Neogene scallops that lived in the Caribbean following the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama and the expansion of reef habitats. Morgan has also been compiling a database on the environmental affinities of living scallops from the Caribbean and east Pacific and Jared has been using the Paleobiology Database to determine when reef habitats became more prevalent in the Caribbean. Morgan and Jared assisted with our fieldwork in the Gulf of Mexico along with Sophia Gigliotti ‘15, Danielle Moloney ‘18, and Rachel Clifford ‘18. Morgan and Jared are supported through the Hackman Summer Scholars program and the Moss Fund.

With Dorothy Merritts:Sam Feibel ‘16 is working on reconstructing late Pleistocene to Holocene landscape processes associated with climate change from cold to warm conditions, and will continue the summer work as a one-year independent study in 2015-16. His primary research area is the Maryland Piedmont, but his work extends into central Penn-sylvania. A 2-km stretch of Piney Run in Maryland will be a focus area and special case study, in part because it will be restored by Maryland Department of Natural Resources during the next few years, and MD DNR wishes to know what types of streams and wetlands existed in the valley bottom during the Holocene. They provided funds and support for backhoe trenching which has been quite helpful in the paleo-geomorphic reconstructions. Sam also will be doing geophysical work to characterize the sub-surface, and Tim Bechtel is providing field support and expertise for this effort. Sam’s work is funded by an alumni donor.

Aaron Hoffman ‘17 has provided field and research assistance this summer, with support from an alumni donor and a grant from the National Science Foundation. The alumni donor funds also are supporting three research associates who just graduated: Dora Chi Xu, Erin Markey, and Sophia Gigliotti.

With Chris Williams:Two Geoscience majors, Yuning Bai ’17 and Carson Morris ‘17 are conducting field and lab work on the State-Line ser-pentine barrens at Goat Hill in southern Chester County, PA. The overall objective is to evaluate the spatial variation in soil nutrients and soil enzymes under areas of different vegetation cover with a focus on phosphorous cycling. It is hoped that the results will help inform management of the woody vegetation that has encroached on the relatively open barren areas due to suppression of natural fire regimes.

Three students presented their research and networked with others at professional meetings this academic year. Erin Markey ‘15 travelled to Vancouver, Canada to present research at the 2014 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting. Chi (Dora) Xu ‘15 and Sophia Gigliotti ’15 presented their independent study research at the 50th Annual GSA Northeastern Section meeting at Bretton Woods, NH. The titles of their papers appear below. All three students remarked about what a great opportunity it was to attend the meetings and convey their research in a professional venue. Several alumni have made directed gifts to support student participation at professional meetings. The Geosci-ence Founders Society provided these funds to assist with the registration and travel costs associated with student attendance at these meetings. The Office of the Dean of the College also provided additional funding to support the professional development of these students.

The Department has always been an early adopter of technology in classrooms. Generous alumni support al-lowed the Department to install some of the first computer projection systems on campus when they were a rarity elsewhere. We have maintained a dedicated Windows PC-based teaching computer lab since 2001. Prior to that it was a Mac teaching lab. We are pleased to announce that three of our classrooms have received major technology upgrades. The College has agreed to replace the 16 computers in the lab with 20 new computers, to replace the computer projection sys-tem with a modern and very innovative digital whiteboard projection system that allows us to present, annotate and edit lecture material on the fly. Other great news is a very substantial network upgrade to provide gigabyte data ports for all computers in the lab. The network upgrade speeds up downloading large remote sensing data sets to the computers. One challenge we faced was squeezing 20 computers into a room designed for 16. The Geoscience Founders Society helped us overcome this challenge by providing funding to reconfigure the room with wall-mounted workspaces to accommodate the increased number or computers. Likewise, our seminar room and main teaching classroom also received renovations with upgraded projection systems and reconfigured and additional blackboard space. These changes represent significant upgrades to the GIS lab and our other classrooms. Needless to say everyone in the Department is grateful to the College for the financial commitment it is making to our program and for alumni support that also enhanced our teaching space.

In 1878, Peter Wilhelm gifted three parcels of land in Somerset County jointly to F&M (2/3) and the Lancaster Theological Seminary (1/3). The surface rights were sold long ago, but F&M still retains the subsurface (mineral and oil & gas) rights. One of the parcels includes outcrop of the Loyalhanna limestone (actually a calcite-cemented sandstone), which is underlain by the Burgoon sandstone. Both of these make high-quality aggregate - particularly for road-way and construction pad use - and therefore could provide some revenue to offset the annual taxes that F&M pays on this property. In order to determine the value of the resource beneath the site, Geoscience major Jake Longenecker ‘16 has been working this summer to evaluate the total volume of the deposits that F&M owns, characterize potential structural and/or hydrogeological impediments to quarrying, and identify existing quarrying operations that might compete with stone from the F&M property. In the fall, Jake will work with students from F&M’s Business, Organizations and Society Department to pro-duce a presentation for prospective quarrying companies that might wish to lease or purchase the mineral rights.

Senior Thesis and Independent Study Preservation Project 2015 Update

The Geoscience Founders Society project to systematically digitize each senior thesis and independent study report in the Department’s collection is rolling along. We have completed the 48 theses that comprise the decade from 1950 to 1960! A handful of large format maps still need to be digitized from this cohort but all in all we have made good progress. The digital copies are being edited one at time and will be added to the F&M Library’s Archives and Special Collection digital repository. The physical copies will remain in the Department. One big challenge is to protect and conserve the original documents. With the help of Christopher Raab, F&M’s Archives and Special Collections Librarian, we have selected and acquired the document preservation materials needed for long-term preservation of these documents. Hard copies of the items that have been digitized will be transferred and stored in archival document cases identical to those used in the library archives. These cases and the folders that contain each thesis are acid–buffered and will protect the documents from dust, dirt and light as well as sta-bilize the papers and photos contained in the student reports. The Geoscience Founders Society is indebted to Ms. Emily Caldwell ’16 (pictured above) who has helped to meticulously edit the digital files and organize and archive the hard copies of the theses that have been digitized so far.

The Geoscience Founders Society is pleased to present an updated directory of alumni of the Department of Geology, Geoscience, and Earth and Environment. The Directory provides a listing of more than 1300 alumni. It has been over a decade since such a directory was issued. Printed copies will be mailed to all members of the Society who are up to date on dues ($25 per year) or who are a Lifetime members ($1,000 donation). An electronic version will be provided to any alumni of the department upon request. Assembling the directory provided an opportunity to analyze the career outcomes of our graduates. What emerged was an impressively diverse array of where an F&M education can take you! Regardless of whether you are just starting out or considering a career change, we hope that you will use the directory to network with fellow graduates. Many graduates are eager and willing to share valuable advice about their careers, the cities where they work or live, or to simply reconnect with fellow alumni. We are indebted to the Alumni Relations Office and the Office of College Advancement for helping to assemble the data that resulted in issuance of an updated directory.

Snapshots of GEO322 Petrology Trip to Hawaii - Spring 2015

Remember when...This photo of the Winter Break 1997 trip to the US Southwest was recently unearthed by Rusty Kahl ‘97.

First row: Adrienne Kiley, Steph Gaswirth, Ian ??, Steve DiBenedetto, Nadine Lurie. Second row: Nate Boonisar, Rusty Kahl, Beth Stone, Holli Frey, Karen Blair, Megan Murphy, Alicia Timme, Don Wise, ?? (nickname of “Buzzsaw”?), Jon Bushey, Spiro Gavaris, and Jeff Winick (?). Not pictured: Dave Hawkins, Ed Beutner (probably taking the photos)

If you can help to identify anyone else, please let us know!

During Spring Break March 2015 the petrology class had an adven-ture in “hands-on” igneous petrology at Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea volcanoes in Hawaii. Hiking a significant portion of Ha-waii Volcanoes NP, crossing countless flows of pahoehoe and aa and every transitional type in between, peering down into seemingly bot-tomless pit craters, being waist deep in snow in a failed attempt to climb to the summit of Mauna Loa, visiting the Keck Telescope and collecting peridotite xenoliths from a Mauna Kea alkali basalt lava flow: a number of permanent geology memories were made.
