We invite you to reflect upon the scripture readings you heard proclaimed at Mass this weekend by sharing with friends and family the “Ques on of the Week”.

Adults: Which response to God’s call is more natural to you – prayer or ac on? Why? Children: In the past week, when have you prayed and when have you done good things for others? Which could you do be er?

A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH LIFE DIRECTOR

Dear Holy Redeemer-St. James Parishioners,

It is a great joy and privilege for me to be joining your Parishes as Parish Life Director. I greeted you all last week-end but can give you a li le informa on on me. I grew up in Southern California, San Gabriel Valley to be spe-cific. I come from a family of 8

siblings. I joined the Sisters of St. Louis a er High School and taught in elementary school for around 20 years. Then I went into Youth Ministry and then Voca on Ministry for the Archdiocese and then into Leadership in Parishes. I spent the last 14yrs in South Central LA at St. Agatha Parish as the Parish Life Director. It is a privilege for me to be here as your Leader with Fr. Mike. I know this model may be new to you, but it works like the other models of leadership in the Archdiocese. Fr. Mike and I are a team along with the rest of the Staff. I am so hap-py to be here to work along side all of you to con-

nue the great work already going on in this com-munity. Let us con nue to grow and spread God's word of Joy and Peace.

Sr. Karen Collier SSL

SHARING FAITH, CELEBRATING TRADITIONS, AND SERVING EACH OTHER TO THE PRAISE AND GLORY OF GOD.

MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE APPEAL Holy Redeemer: Diocese of Adilabad, India

weekend of July 27-28 The Mission Coopera on Appeal is one that helps unite the Archdiocese of Los Angeles with the Universal Church and to emanate mission awareness among the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The generous response, which is tradi onal amongst the people of Los Angeles, is a reflec on of the ongoing awareness and concern for the peoples of the world. The reality of the material needs of the missions can never be overstated. Living in the United States it can be difficult to even imagine life without electricity, clean water and a social support system which exists to help people through difficult

mes. The reality is that many people in the missions do not have clean water, they do not have homes, access to educa on, or opportuni es to make changes in their lives.

Next weekend, Holy Redeemer Church will be visited by Father Anthony Moozhikuzhy, CMI with the Diocese of Adilabad, India. He will share with us their courageous evangeliza on efforts on behalf of the Catholic Church and give us an opportunity to support their work in the field.

With a prayerful heart, please be generous for the Missionary Coopera ve Appeal.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, especially on those days when we dream of air condi oning and wave any available paper to s r the air. Yet we persist in gathering, even with so many breaks from the usual rou nes. We distance ourselves not only from rou nes, but from schedules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contempla ve days. We see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgo en places. We have more leisure than any people before in the history of the world, and we need it because our lives are so care-worn and ring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food with our fingers. We see how beau ful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah prac ce hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. During the summer months, God prac ces hospitality in return, invi ng us into a season of celebra on. Keeping Sunday holy is a good habit to cul vate in these days when our spirits are especially recep ve to God’s deep desire for us to know divine love. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A MINDSET OF SERVICE There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visi ng going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebra ng the kind of righteousness that Abraham prac ces. Then, in his le er to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay a en on to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I present to God and others in my life? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
