SALT LAKE CITY UT
Glendale, Poplar Grove and the Westside
comprise one of the most culturally
diverse neighborhoods in Salt Lake City.
Our community is said to be a cultural
crossroads with more than 100 different
languages spoken and a large
concentration of immigrant families.
The Westside is home to some of the
city’s most treasured assets including
the International Peace Gardens
and the Sorenson Unity Center. The
area is rich in tradition and is bursting
with a variety of locally owned shops
and restaurants highlighting cultures
from all over the world.
Glendale and Poplar Grove are
increasing in popularity thanks to
plentiful affordable housing, large
lots, close proximity to downtown Salt
Lake City, and valuable community
amenities, including 88 acres of parks
and open space.
Westside residents are vibrant, friendly
and take pride in our community. The
area is very family oriented with one-
third of residents under 18 years old
and a median age of only 27 years old.
Glendale and Poplar Grove are located
on the west side of Salt Lake City; the
community stretches from I-15 to
Redwood Road and from 950 South to
2100 South.
HISTORYThe Cannon family was among of the first homesteaders to
settle in the Glendale area and built several large houses
that remain today. In the 1890s, several industries were
established in the Glendale and Poplar Grove areas,
including the Fisher brewery, a biscuit factory, and a soup
factory. Following World War II the area expanded rapidly
and early major subdivisions were built to accommodate
families moving to Utah to support the war effort as part
of the relocation of the Ninth Service Command to Fort
Douglas. In the late 1960s, Salt Lake County began
work on the Jordan River Parkway, which now connects
multiple neighborhoods on Salt Lake City’s west side and
extends throughout the county.
The Westside is expanding into the
remarkable place we’ve aspired to over
the past few years. As a reminder of
the great parts of our community, we
created this map of the Westside
pointing them out.
The map compliments the Westside
Master Plan, a recently adopted,
visionary plan for the next 20 years of
change. The plan anticipates stability
in our single family home areas,
development in our existing business
nodes, improvements to the Jordan
River Parkway and new retail along
Redwood Road.
I hope you can use this map as a
tool to share our great neighborhood
with others.
