Scholarships, Bursaries and GrantsSCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARIES are awards

recognizing academic excellence or achievement, community involvement /leadership.

They may be distributed based on financial need or meeting certain geographical or demographic requirements.

GRANT/AWARD is based on high grades and/or financial need.

Types of ScholarshipsEntrance scholarships: money awards you

get when you enroll in a school for the first time.

Renewable scholarships: are money awards that can be renewed every year if high grades are maintained.

National Scholarships: are money awards open to students across Canada.

External scholarships: are money awards you get from external organizations.

For the REALLY BIG scholarships start researching early, possibly as early as grade 9 and 10.

Criteria (academics, extra-curricular, community involvement, demonstration of leadership qualities)

A. KEEP UP with the LATEST INFORMATION: Check the SCHOLARSHIP BOARD, BINDER, DAILY

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS and SCHOOL WEBSITE on a REGULAR BASIS.

C. Review the scholarship information available for specific Institutes

You can access information about Entrance and Renewable scholarships through these websites.

Great websites to use if you KNOW which postsecondary institute you are targeting.

D. Have your parents check around!

They can check HUMAN RESOURCES department at their work. They could have scholarship available for children of their employees.

They can also check with their religious institutes, unions or community affiliations to see if there are any funds available.

Step 2: Complete the Student Appraisal Form

Towards the end of Grade 11 year Complete and submit the Student

Appraisal Form. This form can be picked up and submitted at Student Services.

It will be used to select potential school nominees for particular scholarships. Ex. Schulich Leaders, Loran

Step 3: Advocate

Notify your counsellor if you feel you are a good candidate for a scholarship that requires you to be nominated by the school.

Step 4: COMPLETE your application Completing the application IS the biggest

challenge forstudents!!!Start early and give yourself plenty of time. Make sure that you have gathered any

supplementary documents (reference letters, transcripts, essays..) on hand.

Every scholarship has it’s own unique application and submission criteria.

Application process cont...Complete the appropriate scholarship

application form well in advance of the deadline.

Ensure all sections are accurately completed. You may require the Principal’s signature,

teacher/counsellor’s endorsement. Give plenty of notice for these things.

** The EssayBefore starting read the instructions

carefully. Give yourself plenty of time. Plan-jot down the points that you

want to include. Focus on QUALITY not QUANTITY. Use clear and concise language.Proofread..Proofread..Proofread.

**Letters of Recommendation

For Letters of Recommendation please provide staff with:

1. A one page summary outlining: Name and criteria of the scholarship you are applying to. Personal information –what makes you a good candidate

for this scholarship/bursary/grant? Community involvement Extracurricular involvement Demonstration of Leadership qualities

2. A minimum of TWO WEEKS notice to complete the letter.

STEP 5. Sending in your Application

Many scholarships/bursaries have varied DUE DATES.

Mail application before the deadline.

Use a Courier service so you can track your package to ensure that it has been delivered and received.

Print off the confirmation of receipt.

STEP 6-Receiving the MoneyMake sure you meet all the conditions to

receive the money: full-time enrollment, maintaining residency etc.

If you are required to attend an awards ceremony or luncheon. Be there, be gracious and dress appropriately.

Thank the donor, when appropriate.
