4 Frank Duveneck (American, 1848-1919) Portrait of Theodore Wendel oil on canvas laid over board monogrammed in red c.r. titled on verso, from previous canvas inscription plaque with artist identification on frame 14.5 x 11.25 in. (sight)
This fine portrait is a noteworthy example of Duveneck’s habit to depict his friends and students on canvas.
Born in Midway, Ohio, Theodore Wendel (1859-1932) was a student of Duveneck and traveled with him to Europe. In Germany as well as in Italy, he became known as one of the “Duveneck boys”, along with other fellow art students. While studying in Paris and Giverny, France, Wendel found another major influence in the work of Claude Monet, who encouraged and praised the skills of the aspiring Impressionist artist. In the last decade of the 19th century, Wendel returned to America and settled in Boston, where he taught at Wellesley College and the Cowles Art School. Renowned for his Impressionist renditions of the New England coast, he is regarded as one of the most important American landscape painters.
This portrait is housed in an early 20th century carved wood frame stamped for M. Grieve Co. / New York / London on the back. Maurice Grieve descended from a line of woodcarvers and was known for framing a number of paintings by Ashcan artist George Bellows.

28 George Catlin (American, 1796-1872) Indian Artifacts original watercolor on paper signed l.r. framed 16.25 x 11 in. (sight)
Kennedy Galleries, NY, label on verso
Further inscription in pencil on verso: From the renoun [sic] Collection Duke of Portland (Wm. John Cavendish Bentinck-Scott) / Said to be a display at London Egyptian Hall in 1840 / purchased from Sir Thomas Philipps
The subject of this watercolor epitomizes Catlin’s fascination with cultural artifacts from American Indian tribes. The objects depicted here include an Eastern style otter bag on the left hand side, a Plains style quiver with arrows in the center, a recurve bow at the top, spears on the right hand side, and eagle feathers in each bottom corner.
In 1840, Catlin opened his own gallery in the London Egyptian Hall, in order to expose a European audience to the tribal cultures of America. Most likely, this watercolor was exhibited, along with other artworks, in his “Indian Gallery”, as he called it. According to the Museum of the
American West, Catlin’s gallery was originally successful, but in order to rekindle interest in his work in subsequent years, he also included displays of genuine artifacts and live performances of Indian rituals and dances.
The Egyptian Hall was located in Piccadilly, London, from 1812 until its demolition in 1905. Built in the Egyptian style, it was conceived as an exhibition hall commissioned by English traveler and collector William Bullock to display his extensive ethnographic and natural history collection, and designed by English architect Peter Frederick Robinson. In 1820, however, the Egyptian Hall was turned into a fine art exhibition space and became eventually known for promoting the watercolor medium.
Two purported notable owners of this particular watercolor by Catlin were William Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland (1857-1943) and Sir Thomas Phillipps. The Duke of Portland was an important political figure of the Victorian era, sitting as a Conservative in the House of Lords and also holding office as Master of the Horse. In addition, he was a renowned thoroughbred owner. Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872) was an English antiquarian known for his outstanding collection of books.

33 George Winter (American, 1810-1876) Wabash River Vicinity of General Tipton’s Residence Near Logansport, Indiana oil on canvas signed and titled on reverse (based on photograph taken prior to relining) housed in period lemon gilt frame 17.5 x 24.5 in. (sight)
Accompanied by a provenance, exhibition, and condition letter, affixed to back of frame, by Paul G. North, Jr.
George Winter is known for his depictions of the Midwestern frontier, specifically of Indiana, where he settled in 1837 after living in Cincinnati, Ohio, for two years. Winter’s intentions were not merely artistic; his depictions of Indian scenes were meant to document the plight of the scorned and displaced Native populations.
This painting, a subtly rendered river landscape at sunset, depicts an encampment of Native Americans on the banks of the Wabash River near Logansport, in Central Indiana. John Tipton (1786-1839) was a US
General and Senator, remembered for his participation in the battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 and his role in the Potawami Trail of Death, a displacement campaign which caused the forced migration of the Potawami people from their native Indiana to reservations in Kansas. Winter was deeply moved by the displacement of Native American populations, and this painting, showing a lone tent camp at the end of day serves as metaphor for their removal.
Exhibited at the John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis, Indiana (now part of the Indiana Museum of Art), in a show titled George Winter: Pioneer Artist of Indiana, November 5-December 10, 1939.
Provenance:
The Clarence and Mildred Long Collection of Indiana Artists, Zionsville, IN.
Purchased from Paul North in 1999.
Acquired by Paul North circa 1953 from the John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis, Indiana (now part of the Indianapolis Museum of Art).
Previously part of the Ernst & Ernst Co. art collection.

Peter Scott was a renowned naturalist and nature artist, especially known for his bird paintings. He had an early passion for hunting and went on to study zoology at Cambridge University. After selling some of his outdoors-inspired paintings when he was a student, Scott came to develop a keen interest in art, which gradually diverted him from hunting and led him to capture wildlife in paint only. After the war, Scott founded the Wildfowl Trust, a reservation including ducks, geese, and swans. Located in Slimbridge, England, it is currently known as the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, and functions as a conservation institution dedicated to the protection of the wetlands and the rescue of endangered species.
In his autobiography, Scott describes his relentless fascination for geese, as reflected in this painting: “There was an orange glow in the east, and out of it came skein after skein of geese, delicately traced patterns on the deep blue of the sky above. Since then I have seen pink-footed geese in flight many thousands of times, in all their winter haunts in Britain; I have followed them to their breeding grounds in Iceland, I have assisted at the capture and ringing of more than 20,000 of them; and yet, the thrill which I felt on that first morning is repeated again every time I see the great skeins stretched across the sky. The spell is as strong as ever.”
(Peter Scott, The Eye of the Wind, Houghton Mifflin Company Boston, The Riverside Press Cambridge, 1961, pp. 75-76.)

182 A Rare Christytown Pottery Works Ohio Harvest Jug American (Mahoning County, Ohio), 19th century. A unique and hand-thrown stoneware harvest jug covered in an Albany slip glaze, having twin “breasts” or “teats” for drinking spouts opposite a larger spout for filling, with stamped and scraffito decorations, and dated Nov 27th 1883. In addition to the aforementioned date, the body of the jug is inscribed with the following in flowing script and block letters: Second Amendment Jug, Old Rye Whiskey, Christy Town Pottery Works, and, in a flowing ribbon on the shoulder, Wm Rose, the presumed owner. The base of the jug features the inscribed lower trunk of a human figure, with its legs spread wide. The jug is further decorated with a series of stamped heart-shaped devices, both above the base and at the shoulder. The “teats” are surrounded by punctate-filled triangles. Though now missing, the handle base features a series of faux “screws”, as does the base of the fill spout; ht. 7, dia. 6 in., estimated capacity of circa one quart.
Little is known of the Christytown Pottery Works, though apparently one of the buildings still exists near the junction of Leffingwell and Beddell Roads in Mahoning County, Ohio. According to the consignor, firebrick was produced there in the early 20th century.
William Rose is listed in the 1880 census as 26 years old and residing in nearby Ellsworth, a few miles east of Christytown, living with his mother Mary and his 23 year old wife Ida. No occupation was recorded by the census taker.

An Ithaca, NY, native, Fuertes both studied and lectured in the ornithology department at Cornell University. In 1911, he embarked on an expedition to Buenaventura, Colombia, with bird curator Frank Chapman and field naturalist Leo E. Miller, both involved with the American Museum of Natural History. It is most likely during this trip that Fuertes drew this depiction of the Cock-of-the-Rock, which was subsequently featured as an illustration in several publications by Miller, including an article titled “In Quest of the Cock-of-the-Rock” (1917) and In the Wilds of South America (1918), a book recounting
Miller’s travels between 1911 and 1916. The purpose of these expeditions, partly financed by President Theodore Roosevelt after 1913, was “to make zoological studies and gather collections for the Museum [of Natural History], and to take observations and acquire data in the regions explored”, as Miller explained in an interview to the New York Times in October 1914. A large amount of Fuertes’ paintings and drawings, which are regarded as accurate renditions of South American wildlife and constitute a major contribution to the field of ornithology, are held at Cornell University.

162 COWAN’S FINE AND DECORATIVE ART BID LIVE ONLINE AT BIDSQUARE.COM
By registering and bidding in an auction conducted by Cowan’s Auctions, Inc. (“Cowan’s”), bidders (whether present in person, by telephone, by agent, by written or telephone absentee bid instruction, or through a live internet connection) agree to be bound by these terms. These are the complete and only terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. Cowan’s retains the right to bar any bidder from participating in any auction and to exclude or reject any bid.1) REGISTRATION. All bidders must register their name, permanent street address (no P.O. Boxes), and telephone number prior to the auction. Unless known to Cowan’s, all registrants are required to present two forms of identification, at least one of which must include a current photograph. Bidders may be required to present a valid Visa or MasterCard. By registering with Cowan’s or submitting an absentee bid form, an individual registrant authorizes Cowan’s to obtain a copy of his or her consumer credit report and authorizes Cowan’s, at its sole discretion, to use the information contained therein to make business decisions regarding the registrant’s participation in the bidding process.2) ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS. Bidding on any item, whether in person, by phone, by absentee bid or via a live internet auction indicates the bidder’s agreement to be bound by these Terms and Conditions for Bidders. Any right of bidder under this agreement shall not be assignable and shall only be enforceable by the original buyer. The rights and obligations of the parties shall be governed by the laws of the state of Ohio. All bidders submit to the personal jurisdiction of the state and federal courts in Ohio.3) TERMS OF SALE. Announcements made the day of auction take precedence over any previous communication. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot at any time before its final sale and to reject any bid for any reason. The highest bidder for each lot acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the “buyer”. If any dispute arises as to any bidding, or between two or more bidders, at the sole discretion of the auctioneer, the successful bidder will be determined or the disputed lot shall be put up again at the last undisputed bid and resold.4) BUYER’S PREMIUM. (a) Buyer’s Premium for “Antique and Modern Firearms” auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 15% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (b) Buyer’s Premium for “Fine and Decorative Art”, “Modern Ceramics”, “American Indian and Western Art”, “American History”, “Fine Jewelry and Timepieces” and any other specialized auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 20% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 15% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (c) Buyer’s Premium for online, timed and other third-party bidding platforms may vary. 5) ESTIMATES AND RESERVES. Presale estimates are intended to be guides and may or may not reflect the ultimate hammer price of a lot. Cowan’s retains the right to change estimates on any lot up to time of sale. A reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the seller of the lot and Cowan’s. In the case of reserved lots, the seller has authorized Cowan’s to bid on seller’s behalf until the reserve price is reached. In no case will the reserve be higher than the low presale estimate. Cowan’s standard house reserve on all property at auction is one-half of the low estimate.6) WARRANTIES AND DISCLAIMERS. Cowan’s makes a limited warranty only to the original buyer of record concerning the authenticity of each lot for a period of 14 days after bidder’s receipt of the purchased lot. If a buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is genuine, the buyer may, at his or her own expense, obtain the opinion of two mutually agreed upon recognized experts in the field of the disputed lot. If these experts determine that the item is not genuine, the buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the rescission of the sale and refund of the amount paid for the item. It is specifically understood and agreed that the rescission of the sale and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy which might otherwise be available as a matter of law or in equity, and such remedy is conditioned upon the buyer returning the property in the same condition as at the time of sale. Cowan’s shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential damages. All sales are final, with no returns or refunds except as provided in this limited warranty.Except as provided in the immediately proceeding paragraph, EVERY LOT IS SOLD “AS IS”, without any representations or warranties by Cowan’s or the seller as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, condition or value of the property, or the correctness or completeness of the catalog or other description of the property, and no statement, whether written or oral, shall be deemed such a representation, warranty or assumption of liability. Cowan’s makes no representation or warranty that the buyer of manuscript material, photographs, prints or works of art will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights. Cowan’s does not guarantee the working order of any clock, watch, electronic or mechanical device. Dimensions given in the catalog descriptions may be approximate.7) DEFINITIONS OF AUTHORSHIP.“By” or “Maker/Artist” — in our opinion, the work is by the artist or maker stated “Attributed to” — in our opinion, the work is probably, but not definitely, by the artist or maker stated “Signed” or “Marked” — in our opinion, the signature or mark is that of the stated artist or maker “Bearing the signature (or mark) of” — in our opinion, the signature or mark is probably, but not definitely, that of the artist or maker stated “Circle of” — in our opinion, the work is of the period and by an artist or maker closely associated with the stated artist or maker “School of” — in our opinion, the work is by a pupil or follower of the stated artist or maker “Manner of” — in our opinion, the work is of the period and done in the style of the stated artist or maker “After” — in our opinion, the work is a copy of a work by the stated artist or maker8) INSPECTION. Buyers interested in the condition of an item are encouraged to contact Cowan’s and, to the best of our ability, we will document for the prospective bidder the condition status on any lot. If you are purchasing items that contain these materials, you need to check the government wildlife import requirements in the countries from which and to which the item is being shipped prior to bidding. Purchasers are responsible for making timely payments on items won at auction, even if a license is delayed or denied.17) SHIPPING CHARGES. Buyers are required to pay for all packing, shipping and insurance charges. Overseas duty charges are the responsibility of the successful bidder.
