V-5 THE LISTENER

(30 minutes. Primary, Intermediate, Junior High, Senior High)

The Listener is a symphony orchestra concert for youth, designed to portray dramatically the importance of listening. The story of The Listener is appropriately presented in a silent medium - pantomime. During this concert, the mime articulates the role of "a listener" as he discovers that he cannot be a performing musician - not a dancer, nor a singer, nor a trumpet player. He learns that he can be an important part of the concert when he becomes a very careful listener. As the concert concludes, the mime's love and enthusiasm for the symphony orchestra has transcended beyond the desire to perform and into the vital and demanding role of The Listener. V-6 DISCOVERING THE ORCHESTRA

(5 videos, 125 minutes. Intermediate, Junior High, Senior High)

Discovering the Orchestra is a five-part journey leading the viewer to an understanding of the symphony orchestra. This video series explores the symphony orchestra through each of its instrumental families - string, brass, woodwind, and percussion. The first four parts describe the instruments within each family. The host and conductor Paul Anthony McRae discusses each instrument: its history, tone production and size/pitch relationship. Following this discussion, a principal member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra plays an excerpt from the orchestral literature. Each part of the video series concludes with an ensemble performance by the entire family of instruments. The fifth and final segment of the video series covers the entire orchestra in a concert performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnol." The location for our musical journey is London, England. London is often considered to be the music capital of the world. Most large cities have one symphony orchestra, but London has four major symphonies. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1946 by one of the world's oldest music societies, the Royal Philharmonic Society, which dates back to 1813. The specific area of London used for this video series is steeped in tradition and history. A brief overview of the historical significance of this location will

enhance the artistry of the video and add a sense of timelessness to the music. (Social Issues Resources Series, Inc.)

V-45-A WHAT DOES MUSIC MEAN? LEONARD BERNSTEIN’S YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS

(60 minutes. Original broadcast date: January 18, 1959. Intermediate, Junior High, Senior High) Even if a composer deliberately writes music to follow a story line, the ultimate “meaning” of great music is not the story but the sounds themselves--and all the underlying emotions and feelings that the composer has worked to express. Those

Page 13: Fine Arts AV Library listing - Roman Catholic Archdiocese ...archstl.org/.../images/stories/fine_arts_av_library_listing.pdf · “The Handcart Song”, “Clementine” and “The

13

emotions are not “extras,” but an integral part of the music. In fact, they are what the music is all about. Works by Ravel, Rossini, Richard Strauss, Beethoven, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and Webern. (Distributed by CLEARVUE/eav, Copyright 1994, Leonard Bernstein Society)

CONCERTS (53 minutes. Original broadcast date: November 6, 1964. Intermediate, Junior High, Senior High)

A plain old song often unfolds as three basic parts: A-B-A. Amazingly, a typical sonata movement is just an expanded version of the ordinary, everyday song To add drama to the sonata, the composer moves between related musical keys. Once you can pick out the A-B-A sections and the changing keys, you’ll be an expert on sonata form! Works by Mozart, Prokofiev, Lennon & McCartney, and Bizet. (Distributed by CLEARVUE/eav, Copyright 1994, Leonard Bernstein Society)

V-47-A WHAT IS CLASSICAL MUSIC? LEONARD BERNSTEIN’S YOUNG PEOPLE’S CONCERTS

(59 minutes. Original broadcast date: January 24, 1959. Intermediate, Junior High, Senior High) To music teachers, “classical” music is really the music of 18th Century Europe, which was formulated by Bach and Handel in a strict, almost mathematical style. Later, Haydn and Mozart changed the formula to add grace and elegance. Still later came Beethoven, a genius who broke all the rules and ushered in the Romantic period. Includes works by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Bach, and Handel. (Distributed by CLEARVUE/eav, Copyright 1994, Leonard Bernstein Society)

V-47-B WHAT MAKES MUSIC SYMPHONIC? LEONARD BERNSTEIN’S YOUNG PEOPLE CONCERTS

(59 minutes. Original broadcast date, December 13, 1958. Intermediate, Junior High, Senior High)

Unlike pop music, symphonic music takes simple musical themes and then “develops” them--that is, changes and expands them--in a dazzling variety of costumes. To “dress-up” music symphonically, the composer may rearrange the notes, add chords, change the pitch, modify the tempo, play one theme against another--the possibilities are endless. Works by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, and Brahms. (Distributed by CLEARVUE/eav, Copyright 1994, Leonard Bernstein Society)

V-48 BLIND TOM

Indentured all his life, Blind Tom found his freedom in the
