    Rugs and Textiles from the

    Grover Schiltz Collection

During his forty-five years as principal English horn player for the Chicago Symphony, Grover

Schiltz had the opportunity to travel often and widely. When he traveled, and was not rehearsing or

performing, he looked for rugs, especially Turkish and Caucasian village weavings.

Grovers passion for rugs began in the early 1960s. The orchestra was using a new recording

studio, and a few doors down from the studio was the gallery of the legendary Chicago art dealer,

Bud Holland. According to Michael Franses, Bud Holland . . . had extraordinary taste, great

charisma, and charm, and a wonderful sense of humor.1Bud was a visionary in a number of ways,

especially in his pairing of modern paintings alongside antique Caucasian rugs.

Standing in front of Buds gallery for that first time, Grover was smitten. He called his wife, Beverly,

and said: Youve got to get down hereIm standing in front of the most beautiful thing Ive

ever seen!a mid-19th century Kazak. He bought it, of course. And thus, under Bud Hollands

tutelage, Grover began a lifetime of rug collecting.

Beverly noted, In those days, we didnt have much money to spend on rugs, but Buddy didnt

care: Bud sold paintings to wealthy people, and antique rugs to people of average means. Bud

wasnt after your money, he was after your enthusiasm.

And that enthusiasm is evident in this collection of rugs, a number of which have been published

in Peter Stones excellent exhibition catalog, Mideast Meets Midwest. Beverly, again: Grover

always had a clear idea of what he wanted, and why he wanted it. You can see those ideas, an

organizing intelligence and a depth of feeling, in the following rugs and textiles. Some of them are

not in the best condition, and a few of them are not the best of type, but most of them are terrific,

and a few of them are great. All of them are expressions of Grover Schiltzs refined and open-

hearted sensibility at play in the world.
